Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, and Aaron, saying:
'Take a census by clans and families of the Levites descended from Kohath:2 Take the sum of the sons of Caath from the midst of the Levites, by their houses and families.
al the men between thirty and fifty years of age and eligible for military service, who will have theirduties in the Tent of Meeting.3 From thirty years old and upward, to fifty years old, of all that go in to stand and to minister in the tabernacle of the covenant.
'These are the duties of the Kohathites: looking after those things that are especial y holy.4 This is the service of the sons of Caath:
'When camp is broken, Aaron and his sons must come and take down the screening curtain, and coverthe ark of the Testimony with it.5 When the camp is to set forward, Aaron and his sons shall go into the tabernacle of the covenant, and the holy of holies, and shall take down the veil that hangeth before the door, and shall wrap up the ark of the testimony in it,
Over this, they will put a covering of fine leather, over which they wil spread a cloth entirely of violet-purple. They wil then fix the poles to the ark.6 And shall cover it again with a cover of violet skins, and shall spread over it a cloth all of violet, and shall put in the bars.
'Over the offertory table they wil spread a violet cloth, and on it put the dishes, cups, bowls and libationjars; the bread of permanent offering will also be on it.7 They shall wrap up also the table of proposition in a cloth of violet, and shall put with it the censers and little mortars, the cups and bowls to pour out the libations: the leaves shall be always on it:
Over these they will spread a scarlet cloth and cover the whole with a covering of fine leather. They willthen fix the poles to the table.8 And they shall spread over it a cloth of scarlet, which again they shall cover with a covering of violet skins, and shall put in the bars.
'They wil then take a violet cloth and cover the lamp-stand, its lamps, snuffers, trays and al the oil jars used for it,9 They shall take also a cloth of violet wherewith they shall cover the candlestick with the lamps and tongs thereof and the snuffers and all the oil vessels, which are necessary for the dressing of the lamps :
and wil lay it and al its accessories in a covering of fine leather and put it on the litter.10 And over all they shall put a cover of violet skins and put in the bars.
'Over the golden altar they wil spread a violet cloth, and cover that with a covering of fine leather. They wil then fix the poles to it.11 And they shall wrap up the golden altar also in a cloth of violet, and shall spread over it a cover of violet skins, and put in the bars.
'They wil then take al the other objects used in the service of the sanctuary, put them in a violetcloth, with a covering of fine leather, and put it al on the litter.12 All the vessels wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, they shall wrap up in a cloth of violet, and shall spread over it a cover of violet skins, and put in the bars.
'When they have removed the ashes from the altar, they wil spread a scarlet cloth over it,13 They shall cleanse the altar also from the ashes, and shall wrap it up in a purple cloth,
and on this place all the objects used in the liturgy, the fire pans, hooks, scoops, sprinkling basins andal the altar accessories. Over this they will spread a covering of fine leather. They wil then fix the poles to it.14 And shall put it with all the vessels that they use in the ministry thereof, that is to say, firepans, fleshhooks and forks, pothooks and shovels. They shall cover all the vessels of the altar together with a covering of violet skins, and shall put in the bars.
'Once Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy things and all their accessories at thebreaking of camp, the Kohathites wil come and carry them, but without touching any of the holy things on pain ofdeath. Such is the load for the Kohathites in the Tent of Meeting.15 And when Aaron and his sons have wrapped up the sanctuary and the vessels thereof at the removing of the camp, then shall the sons of Caath enter in to carry the things wrapped up: and they shall not touch the vessels of the sanctuary, lest they die. These are the burdens of the sons of Caath: in the tabernacle of the covenant:
But Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, is responsible for looking after the oil for the light, the fragrantincense, the daily cereal offering and the anointing oil, and for supervising the entire Dwel ing and everything init, the holy things and their accessories.'16 And over them shall be Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, to whose charge pertaineth the oil to dress the lamps, and the sweet incense, and the sacrifice, that is always offered, and the oil of unction, and whatsoever pertaineth to the service of the tabernacle, and of all the vessels that are in the sanctuary.
Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:17 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
'You must not let the group of Kohathite clans be lost to the rest of the Levites.18 Destroy not the people of Caath from the midst of the Levites:
But deal with them in this way, so that they may survive and not incur death by approaching thosethings that are especial y holy. Aaron and his sons wil go in and assign to each of them his task and load,19 But do this to them, that they may live, and not die, by touching the holies of holies. Aaron and his sons shall go in, and they shall appoint every man his work, and shall divide the burdens that every man is to carry.
in such a way that they have no need to incur the death penalty by going in and setting eyes on theholy things, even for an instant.'20 Let not others by any curiosity see the things that are in the sanctuary before they be wrapped up, otherwise they shall die.
