1 on whom I rely to give me support and to reinforce me.	1 - Ed io, dal primo anno di Dario Medo, lo assisteva per dargli forza e vigore.
2 And now I shal tell you the truth about these things. 'Three more kings are going to rise in Persia; afourth wil come and be richer than al the others, and when, thanks to his wealth, he has grown powerful, he wilmake war on al the kingdoms of Greece.	2 Ed ora ti annunzierò la verità: Ecco che tre re ancora si succederanno in Persia e il quarto si arricchirà di molte dovizie sopra tutti gli altri e diventato fortemente dovizioso, ecciterà tutti contro il regno della Grecia.
3 A mighty king wil rise and govern a vast empire and do whatever he pleases.	3 Poi sorgerà un re forte e dominerà con molta potenza e farà ciò che gli piacerà.
4 But once he has come to power, his empire wil be broken up and parcelled out to the four winds ofheaven, though not to his descendants: it wil not be ruled as he ruled it, for his sovereignty will be uprooted andwil pass to others than his own descendants.	4 E affermato che sarà il suo regno, sarà fatto in pezzi e sarà diviso ai quattro venti del cielo, ma non resterà pei suoi discendenti, nè colla potenza come aveva lui di dominare, perchè il suo regno sarà spartito e passerà anche agli stranieri oltre che a questi.
5 'The king of the south wil grow powerful, but one of his princes wil grow more powerful stil , with anempire greater than his own.	5 E il re del mezzogiorno diventerà potente, ma uno dei suoi generali la vincerà su di lui e signoreggerà con potenza, perchè grande sarà la sua potestà.
6 Some years later, these will conclude a treaty and, to ratify the agreement, the daughter of the king ofthe south wil go to the king of the north. Her arm will not, however, retain its strength, nor his posterity endure:she wil be handed over, she, her escorts and her child, and he who has had authority over her. In due time	6 E al termine di alcuni anni faranno alleanza; e la figlia del re del mezzogiorno si recherà dal re del settentrione per stringere l'amicizia e non troverà fermezza di appoggio, nè si stabilirà il suo seme; essa e coloro che l'avranno condotta, i suoi giovani e i suoi sostenitori saranno messi a morte in varie circostanze.
7 a sprig from her roots wil rise in his place, wil march on the defences, force the stronghold of the kingof the north, and succeed in overcoming them.	7 Ma del suo ceppo resterà un rampollo in vita, e verrà col suo esercito ed entrerà nello stato del re di settentrione e ne farà malgoverno e s'impadronirà di loro.
8 He wil even carry off al their gods, their statues, their precious gold and silver vessels as booty toEgypt. For some years he wil leave the king of the north in peace,	8 Di più riporterà in Egitto, come spoglie di guerra, i loro dèi e i simulacri coi vasi preziosi di argento e di oro; egli sarà vincitore del re di settentrione.
9 but the latter will invade the kingdom of the king of the south, then retire to his own country.	9 E scorso che avrà il re di mezzogiorno quel regno ritornerà nella sua terra.
10 His sons wil next be on the march, mustering a host of powerful forces; and he wil advance, deploy,break through and march on the southern stronghold once again.	10 Ma i figli di quello riprenderanno l'offensiva, e raduneranno una quantità di eserciti numerosi, e uno di essi verrà veloce e invadente; farà ritorno, e farà impeto e verrà alle mani colle forze dell'altro.
11 The king of the south wil fly into a rage and set out to give battle to the king of the north, who wilhave an immense army on his side, but this army wil be defeated by him.	11 E il re del mezzogiorno, messo al cimento, uscirà in campo e combatterà contro il re del settentrione, e preparerà una moltitudine copiosa e la moltitudine dell'altro cadrà nelle sue mani.
12 The army wil be annihilated; he wil be triumphant; he wil overthrow tens of thousands; yet he wilhave no enduring strength.	12 S'impadronirà di quella moltitudine e il suo cuore s'inalzerà e getterà a terra uomini a migliaia, ma non riuscirà a prevalere.
13 The king of the north wil come back, having recruited an even larger army than before, and final y,after some years, he wil advance a second time with a great army and plentiful supplies.	13 Perchè il re del settentrione ritornerà sui suoi passi, e preparerà una moltitudine molto più grande di prima; e al termine di un certo tempo e di alcuni anni, verrà veloce con un grande esercito e con un grande apparato.
14 At that time, many wil take up arms against the king of the south, and the more violent of your ownpeople wil rebel in the hope of realising the vision; but they will fail.	14 E in quei tempi insorgeranno molti contro il re del mezzogiorno; anche i figli dei prevaricatori del tuo popolo si leveranno, affinchè si compia la previsione, ma cascheranno.
15 The king of the north wil then come and throw up siege-works to capture a strongly fortified city. The forces of the south wil not stand their ground; the pick of the people will not be strong enough to resist.	15 E verrà il re del settentrione e stringerà di assedio le città, le meglio fortificate prenderà e le braccia che sostenevano il re del mezzogiorno non resisteranno e i più scelti sorgeranno per resistere, ma non avranno forza bastante.
16 The invader wil do as he pleases, no one wil be able to resist him: he will take his stand in the Landof Splendour, destruction in his hands.	16 E venendo sopra di lui, farà ciò che gli piacerà, e nessuno reggerà davanti a lui, e si fermerà nel bel paese che sarà desolato sotto la sua mano.
17 He wil set about conquering his entire kingdom, but wil then make a treaty with him and, tooverthrow the kingdom, give him a woman's hand; but this wil not last or be to his advantage.	17 E si disporrà per venire a conquistare tutto quel regno, e farà delle trattative con lui; e gli darà sposa una figlia delle sue per rovesciarlo, ma non riuscirà ed essa non sarà per lui.
18 He wil next turn to the coasts and islands and conquer many of them, but a magistrate wil put a stopto his outrages in such a way that he wil be unable to repay outrage for outrage.	18 Poi volgerà le sue mire alle isole e s'impadronirà di molte, ma un condottiero farà cessare la sua tracotanza, e senza esserne [tocco] riverserà su lui la sua tracotanza.
19 'He wil then turn on the strongholds of his own country, but wil stumble, fall, and never be seenagain.	19 E si volgerà per ritornare sulla terra del suo regno e inciamperà e cascherà e più non si troverà.
20 In his place there wil rise a man who wil send an extortioner to despoil the royal splendour; in a fewdays he wil be shattered, though neither publicly nor in battle.	20 E occuperà il suo posto colui che manda l'esattore nel [luogo ch'è la] gloria del regno; ma in pochi giorni sarà infranto, ma non per bellico furore, nè per battaglia.
21 'In his place wil rise a wretch: royal honours wil not be given to him, but rather he wil insinuatehimself into them at his pleasure and wil gain possession of the kingdom by intrigue.	21 E gli succederà un uomo spregevole a cui non saranno dovuti gli onori di re, e verrà nascostamente e usurperà il regno colla frode.
22 Armies will be utterly routed and crushed by him, the Prince of the covenant too.	22 E le braccia pugnaci saranno respinte di fronte a lui e infrante e anche il capo dell'alleanza.
23 Through his alliances he wil act treacherously and, despite the smal ness of his fol owing, grow everstronger.	23 E dopo aver stretto amicizia, userà con lui l'inganno e uscirà in campo e vincerà con un piccolo numero.
24 At his pleasure, he wil invade rich provinces, acting as his fathers or his fathers' fathers never acted,distributing among them plunder, spoil and wealth, plotting his stratagems against the fortresses -- for a time.	24 Ed entrerà nelle fiorenti e floride città e farà ciò che non fecero i padri e gli avi suoi; farà rapine e depredazioni e metterà a sacco le altrui ricchezze e preparerà i suoi piani contro le città fortificatissime e questo fino a un dato tempo.
25 'He wil summon up his might and courage against the king of the south with a great army. The kingof the south wil march to war with a huge and powerful army but wil not succeed, since he will be outwitted bytrickery.	25 E ridesterà la sua forza e il suo cuore contro il re del mezzogiorno, con un poderoso esercito; e il re del mezzogiorno si muoverà alla guerra con molte schiere ausiliari e molto forti ma non dureranno perchè ordiranno contro di esso delle congiure.
26 Those who shared his food wil ruin him; his army wil be swept away, many wil fall in the slaughter.	26 E i suoi commensali lo faranno perire e il suo esercito sarà oppresso e moltissimi cadranno uccisi.
27 'The two kings, seated at one table, hearts bent on evil, wil tell their lies; but they will not have theirway, for the appointed time is stil to come.	27 E il cuore dei due re sarà vòlto a farsi del male e alla stessa mensa parleranno con menzogna e non conchiuderanno nulla, perchè la fine è riservata ad altro tempo.
28 Then the wretch wil return greatly enriched to his own country, his heart set against the holycovenant; he wil take action and then return to his own country.	28 E l'uno ritornerà nella sua terra con molte ricchezze e avrà disegni in cuore contro la santa alleanza e li metterà in esecuzione, poi ritornerà nella sua terra.
29 In due time, he will make his way southwards again, but this time the outcome wil not be as before.	29 Ma al tempo fissato tornerà e verrà nel mezzogiorno, ma non come la prima sarà l'ultima volta.
30 The ships of the Kittim wil oppose him, and he wil be worsted. He wil retire and take furious actionagainst the holy covenant and, as before, wil favour those who forsake that holy covenant.	30 E sopraggiungeranno contro di lui le triremi e i Romani e sarà percosso e se ne ritornerà pieno di sdegno verso l'alleanza del santuario e si adopererà contro: poi tornerà e farà disegni contro quelli che abbandonarono l'alleanza del santuario.
31 'Forces of his wil come and profane the Citadel-Sanctuary; they will abolish the perpetual sacrificeand instal the appal ing abomination there.	31 E vi saranno dei suoi che presteranno il braccio e contamineranno il santuario di fortezza, e faran cessare il sacrifizio perenne, e metteranno l'abominazione per desolazione.
32 Those who break the covenant he wil seduce by his blandishments, but the people who know theirGod will stand firm and take action.	32 E gli empi contro l'alleanza s'infingeranno con frodi, ma il popolo che riconosce il suo Dio si terrà fermo e si presterà all'opera.
33 Those of the people who are wise leaders wil instruct many; for some days, however, they wilstumble from sword and flame, captivity and pil age.	33 E i bene istruiti tra il popolo istruiranno molti altri e cadranno sotto il ferro e il fuoco e la schiavitù e la depredazione molti giorni.
34 And thus stumbling, little help wil they receive, though many will be scheming in their support.	34 Rimasti oppressi saranno sollevati da un breve soccorso e allora molti si aggiungeranno a loro, ma non sinceramente.
35 Of the wise leaders some wil stumble, and so a number of them wil be purged, purified and madeclean -- until the time of the End, for the appointed time is stil to come.	35 E degli istruiti molti soccomberanno, perchè sian provati nel fuoco e purificati e fatti candidi fino a un tempo stabilito, perchè sarà ancora un altro tempo.
36 'The king wil do as he pleases, growing more and more arrogant, considering himself greater thanal the gods; he will utter incredible blasphemies against the God of gods, and he wil thrive until the wrathreaches bursting point; for what has been decreed wil certainly be fulfil ed.	36 E il re agirà a sua volontà e si leverà e si glorificherà sopra ogni altro dio e dirà delle cose mostruose contro il Dio degli dèi e prospererà fino a tanto che l'ira sia colma, perchè la decisione ha da essere compiuta.
37 Heedless of his fathers' gods, heedless of the god whom women love, heedless of any godwhatever, he wil consider himself greatest of al .	37 Egli non riconoscerà più il dio dei suoi padri e si darà alla passione delle donne e non si curerà più d'alcun dio, perchè si leverà contro tutti.
38 Instead of them, he wil honour the god of fortresses, will honour a god unknown to his ancestorswith gold and silver, precious stones and valuable presents.	38 Presterà culto invece al dio Maozim nella sua propria sede, un dio che i padri suoi ignorarono onorerà con oro e argento e pietre preziose e pregiate cose.
39 He wil use the people of an alien god to defend the fortresses; he will confer great honours on thosewhom he acknowledges, by giving them wide authority and by parcel ing the country out for rent.	39 E si adoprerà di render più forti Maozim con un dio straniero; chi l'avrà riconosciuto lo crescerà di gloria e gli conferirà poteri molteplici e gli darà porzioni di terreno gratuitamente.
40 'When the time comes for the End, the king of the south will try conclusions with him; but the king ofthe north wil come storming down on him with chariots, cavalry, and a large fleet. He wil invade countries,overrun them and drive on.	40 Nel tempo prefinito combatterà contro di esso il re del mezzogiorno; e il re del settentrione si getterà contro di lui, come una bufera, con carri e cavalleria e flotta grande, e invaderà la contrada e devasterà e passerà oltre.
41 He wil invade the Land of Splendour, and many wil fal ; but Edom, Moab, and what remains of thesons of Ammon wil escape him.	41 Ed entrerà nel bel paese e molte terre cadranno, resteranno salve dalla sua mano queste sole: Edom e Moab e un orlo dei figli di Ammon.
42 'He wil reach out to attack countries: Egypt will not escape him.	42 E stenderà la sua mano sopra parecchie contrade, e la terra di Egitto non sfuggirà.
43 The gold and silver treasures and al the valuables of Egypt wil lie in his power. Libyans andCushites wil be at his feet:	43 E s'impadronirà dei tesori di oro e di argento e di tutte le cose preziose di Egitto, passerà anche per la Libia e l'Etiopia.
44 but reports coming from the East and the north wil worry him, and in great fury he wil set out to bringruin and complete destruction to many.	44 Ma le voci che verranno dall'oriente e dal settentrione lo metteranno in turbamento, e verrà con una grande moltitudine per infrangere e uccidere molti.
45 He wil pitch the tents of his royal headquarters between the sea and the mountains of the HolySplendour. Yet he wil come to his end -- there wil be no help for him.'	45 E pianterà le tende del suo palazzo fra i mari e il bel monte santo, e perverrà al termine della sua ascensione; e resterà privo di ogni aiuto.
