NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 on whom I rely to give me support and to reinforce me.	1 Or io, nell’anno primo di Dario Medo, sono stato presente per confortarlo, e per fortificarlo.
2 And now I shal tell you the truth about these things. 'Three more kings are going to rise in Persia; afourth wil come and be richer than al the others, and when, thanks to his wealth, he has grown powerful, he wilmake war on al the kingdoms of Greece.	2 Ed ora, io ti dichiarerò cose vere. Ecco, vi saranno ancora tre re in Persia; poi il quarto acquisterà di gran ricchezze sopra tutti gli altri; e come egli si sarà fortificato nelle sue ricchezze, egli farà muover tutti contro al regno di Iavan.
3 A mighty king wil rise and govern a vast empire and do whatever he pleases.	3 Poi sorgerà un re possente, e valoroso; il quale possederà un grande imperio, e farà ciò ch’egli vorrà.
4 But once he has come to power, his empire wil be broken up and parcelled out to the four winds ofheaven, though not to his descendants: it wil not be ruled as he ruled it, for his sovereignty will be uprooted andwil pass to others than his own descendants.	4 Ma tosto ch’egli sarà sorto, il suo regno sarà rotto, e sarà diviso per li quattro venti del cielo, e non alla sua progenie; e quello non sarà pari all’imperio che esso avrà posseduto; perciocchè il suo regno sarà stirpato, e sarà di altri, oltre a coloro
5 'The king of the south wil grow powerful, but one of his princes wil grow more powerful stil , with anempire greater than his own.	5 E il re del Mezzodì si fortificherà, ed un altro de’ capitani d’esso; costui si fortificherà sopra quell’altro, e regnerà, e il suo imperio sarà grande.
6 Some years later, these will conclude a treaty and, to ratify the agreement, the daughter of the king ofthe south wil go to the king of the north. Her arm will not, however, retain its strength, nor his posterity endure:she wil be handed over, she, her escorts and her child, and he who has had authority over her. In due time	6 E in capo d’alcuni anni, si congiungeranno insieme, e la figliuola del re del Mezzodì verrà al re del Settentrione, per far loro accordi; ma ella non potrà rattener la forza del braccio; e nè colui, nè il suo braccio, non potrà durare; e colei, insieme con quelli che l’avranno condotta, e il figliuolo di essa, e chi terrà la parte sua, saranno dati a morte in que’ tempi.
7 a sprig from her roots wil rise in his place, wil march on the defences, force the stronghold of the kingof the north, and succeed in overcoming them.	7 Ma d’un rampollo delle radici di essa sorgerà uno, nello stato di colui, il qual verrà con esercito, e verrà contro alle fortezze del re del Settentrione, e farà di gran fatti contro ad esse, e se ne impadronirà;
8 He wil even carry off al their gods, their statues, their precious gold and silver vessels as booty toEgypt. For some years he wil leave the king of the north in peace,	8 ed anche menerà in cattività in Egitto i lor dii, co’ lor principi, e co’ lor preziosi arredi d’oro, e d’argento; ed egli durerà per alquanti anni, senza tema del re del Settentrione.
9 but the latter will invade the kingdom of the king of the south, then retire to his own country.	9 E il re del Mezzodì verrà nel suo regno, e se ne ritornerà al suo paese.
10 His sons wil next be on the march, mustering a host of powerful forces; and he wil advance, deploy,break through and march on the southern stronghold once again.	10 Poi i figliuoli di colui entreranno in guerra, e aduneranno una moltitudine di grandi eserciti; e l’un d’essi verrà di subito, e inonderà, e passerà oltre; poi ritornerà ancora, e darà battaglia, e perverrà fino alla fortezza del re del Mezzodì.
11 The king of the south wil fly into a rage and set out to give battle to the king of the north, who wilhave an immense army on his side, but this army wil be defeated by him.	11 E il re del Mezzodì, inasprito, uscirà fuori, e combatterà con lui, cioè col re del Settentrione, il qual leverà una gran moltitudine; ma quella moltitudine sarà data in man del re del Mezzodì.
12 The army wil be annihilated; he wil be triumphant; he wil overthrow tens of thousands; yet he wilhave no enduring strength.	12 E dopo ch’egli avrà disfatta quella moltitudine, il cuor suo s’innalzerà; onde, benchè abbia abbattute delle decine di migliaia, non però sarà fortificato.
13 The king of the north wil come back, having recruited an even larger army than before, and final y,after some years, he wil advance a second time with a great army and plentiful supplies.	13 E il re del Settentrione leverà di nuovo una moltitudine maggiore della primiera; e in capo di qualche tempo, ed anni, egli verrà con grosso esercito, e con grande apparecchio.
14 At that time, many wil take up arms against the king of the south, and the more violent of your ownpeople wil rebel in the hope of realising the vision; but they will fail.	14 E in quei tempi molti si leveranno contro al re del Mezzodì; e degli uomini ladroni d’infra il tuo popolo si eleveranno, per adempier la visione; e caderanno.
15 The king of the north wil then come and throw up siege-works to capture a strongly fortified city. The forces of the south wil not stand their ground; the pick of the people will not be strong enough to resist.	15 E il re del Settentrione verrà, e farà degli argini, e prenderà le città delle fortezze; e le braccia del Mezzodì, e la scelta del suo popolo non potranno durare, e non vi sarà forza alcuna da resistere.
16 The invader wil do as he pleases, no one wil be able to resist him: he will take his stand in the Landof Splendour, destruction in his hands.	16 E colui che sarà venuto contro ad esso farà ciò che gli piacerà; e non vi sarà alcuno che gli possa stare a fronte; poi egli si fermerà nel paese della bellezza, il quale sarà consumato per man sua.
17 He wil set about conquering his entire kingdom, but wil then make a treaty with him and, tooverthrow the kingdom, give him a woman's hand; but this wil not last or be to his advantage.	17 Poi egli imprenderà di venire con le forze di tutto il suo regno, offerendo condizioni d’accordo, onde egli verrà a capo; e darà a quell’altro una figliuola per moglie, corrompendola; ma ella non sarà costante, e non terrà per lui.
18 He wil next turn to the coasts and islands and conquer many of them, but a magistrate wil put a stopto his outrages in such a way that he wil be unable to repay outrage for outrage.	18 Poi egli volgerà la faccia alle isole, e ne prenderà molte; ma un capitano farà cessare il vituperio fattogli da colui; e, oltre a ciò, renderà a lui stesso il suo vituperio.
19 'He wil then turn on the strongholds of his own country, but wil stumble, fall, and never be seenagain.	19 Poi egli volgerà la faccia alle fortezze del suo paese, e traboccherà, e caderà, e sarà rotto, e non sarà più trovato.
20 In his place there wil rise a man who wil send an extortioner to despoil the royal splendour; in a fewdays he wil be shattered, though neither publicly nor in battle.	20 Poi sorgerà nello stato di esso, con maestà reale, uno che manderà attorno esattori: ma fra alquanti dì sarà rotto, non in ira, nè in guerra
21 'In his place wil rise a wretch: royal honours wil not be given to him, but rather he wil insinuatehimself into them at his pleasure and wil gain possession of the kingdom by intrigue.	21 Appresso sorgerà nel suo stato uno sprezzato, al qual non sarà imposta la gloria reale; ma egli verrà quetamente, ed occuperà il regno per lusinghe.
22 Armies will be utterly routed and crushed by him, the Prince of the covenant too.	22 E le braccia del paese inondato saranno inondate da lui, e saranno rotte, come anche il capo del patto.
23 Through his alliances he wil act treacherously and, despite the smal ness of his fol owing, grow everstronger.	23 E dopo l’accordo fatto con quell’altro, egli procederà con frode, e salirà, e si fortificherà con poca gente.
24 At his pleasure, he wil invade rich provinces, acting as his fathers or his fathers' fathers never acted,distributing among them plunder, spoil and wealth, plotting his stratagems against the fortresses -- for a time.	24 Egli entrerà nel riposo, e nei luoghi grassi della provincia, e farà cose, che i suoi padri, nè i padri de’ suoi padri, non avranno mai fatte; egli spargerà alla sua gente preda, spoglie, e richezze; e farà delle imprese contro alle fortezze; e ciò fino ad un tempo.
25 'He wil summon up his might and courage against the king of the south with a great army. The kingof the south wil march to war with a huge and powerful army but wil not succeed, since he will be outwitted bytrickery.	25 Poi egli moverà le sue forze, e il cuor suo, contro al re del Mezzodì, con grande esercito; e il re del Mezzodì, verrà a battaglia, con grande e potentissimo esercito; ma non potrà durare; perciocchè si faranno delle macchinazioni contro a lui.
26 Those who shared his food wil ruin him; his army wil be swept away, many wil fall in the slaughter.	26 E quelli che mangeranno il suo piatto lo romperanno; e l’esercito di colui inonderà il paese, e molti caderanno uccisi.
27 'The two kings, seated at one table, hearts bent on evil, wil tell their lies; but they will not have theirway, for the appointed time is stil to come.	27 E il cuore di que’ due re sarà volto ad offender l’un l’altro, e in una medesima tavola parleranno insieme con menzogna; ma ciò non riuscirà bene; perciocchè vi sarà ancora una fine, al tempo determinato.
28 Then the wretch wil return greatly enriched to his own country, his heart set against the holycovenant; he wil take action and then return to his own country.	28 E colui se ne ritornerà al suo paese con gran ricchezze; e il suo cuore sarà contro al Patto santo; ed egli farà di gran cose: e poi se ne ritornerà al suo paese.
29 In due time, he will make his way southwards again, but this time the outcome wil not be as before.	29 Al tempo determinato, egli verrà di nuovo contro al paese del Mezzodi; ma la cosa non riuscirà quest’ultima volta come la prima.
30 The ships of the Kittim wil oppose him, and he wil be worsted. He wil retire and take furious actionagainst the holy covenant and, as before, wil favour those who forsake that holy covenant.	30 E verranno contro a lui delle navi di Chittim, ed egli ne sarà contristato, e se ne ritornerà, e indegnerà contro al Patto santo, e farà di gran cose: poi ritornerà, e porgerà le orecchie a quelli che avranno abbandonato il Patto santo.
31 'Forces of his wil come and profane the Citadel-Sanctuary; they will abolish the perpetual sacrificeand instal the appal ing abomination there.	31 E le braccia terranno la parte sua, e profaneranno il santuario della fortezza, e torranno via il sacrificio continuo, e vi metteranno l’abbominazione disertante.
32 Those who break the covenant he wil seduce by his blandishments, but the people who know theirGod will stand firm and take action.	32 E per lusinghe egli indurrà a contaminarsi quelli che avran misfatto contro al Patto; ma il popolo di quelli che conoscono l’Iddio loro si fortificherà, e si porterà valorosamente.
33 Those of the people who are wise leaders wil instruct many; for some days, however, they wilstumble from sword and flame, captivity and pil age.	33 E gl’intendenti d’infra il popolo ne ammaestreranno molti; e caderanno per la spada, e per le fiamme, e andranno in cattività, e saranno in preda, per molti giorni.
34 And thus stumbling, little help wil they receive, though many will be scheming in their support.	34 Ma mentre caderanno così, saranno soccorsi di un po’ di soccorso; e molti si aggiungeranno con loro con bei sembianti infinti.
35 Of the wise leaders some wil stumble, and so a number of them wil be purged, purified and madeclean -- until the time of the End, for the appointed time is stil to come.	35 Di quegl’intendenti adunque ne caderanno alcuni: acciocchè fra loro ve ne sieno di quelli che sieno posti al cimento, e purgati, e imbiancati, fino al tempo della fine; perciocchè vi sarà ancora una fine, al tempo determinato.
36 'The king wil do as he pleases, growing more and more arrogant, considering himself greater thanal the gods; he will utter incredible blasphemies against the God of gods, and he wil thrive until the wrathreaches bursting point; for what has been decreed wil certainly be fulfil ed.	36 Questo re adunque farà ciò che gli piacerà, e s’innalzerà, e si magnificherà sopra ogni dio; e proferirà cose strane contro all’Iddio degl’iddii; e prospererà, finchè l’indegnazione sia venuta meno; conciossiachè una determinazione ne sia stata fatta.
37 Heedless of his fathers' gods, heedless of the god whom women love, heedless of any godwhatever, he wil consider himself greatest of al .	37 Ed egli non si curerà degl’iddii de’ suoi padri, nè d’amor di donne, nè di dio alcuno; perciocchè egli si magnificherà sopra ogni cosa.
38 Instead of them, he wil honour the god of fortresses, will honour a god unknown to his ancestorswith gold and silver, precious stones and valuable presents.	38 Ed egli onorerà un dio delle fortezze sopra il suo seggio; egli onorerà, con oro, e con argento, e con gemme, e con cose preziose, un dio, il quale i suoi padri non avranno conosciuto.
39 He wil use the people of an alien god to defend the fortresses; he will confer great honours on thosewhom he acknowledges, by giving them wide authority and by parcel ing the country out for rent.	39 Ed egli verrà a capo de’ luoghi muniti delle fortezze, con quell’iddio strano; egli accrescerà d’onore quelli ch’egli riconoscerà, e li farà signoreggiar sopra molti, e spartirà la terra per prezzo.
40 'When the time comes for the End, the king of the south will try conclusions with him; but the king ofthe north wil come storming down on him with chariots, cavalry, and a large fleet. He wil invade countries,overrun them and drive on.	40 Or in sul tempo della fine, il re del Mezzodì cozzerà con lui; e il re del Settentrione gli verrà addosso, a guisa di turbo, con carri, e con cavalieri, e con molto naviglio; ed entrerà ne’ paesi d’esso, e inonderà e passerà a traverso;
41 He wil invade the Land of Splendour, and many wil fal ; but Edom, Moab, and what remains of thesons of Ammon wil escape him.	41 ed entrerà nel paese della bellezza, e molti paesi ruineranno; e questi scamperanno dalla sua mano: Edom, Moab, e la principal parte de’ figliuoli di Ammon.
42 'He wil reach out to attack countries: Egypt will not escape him.	42 Così egli metterà la mano sopra molti paesi, e il paese di Egitto non iscamperà.
43 The gold and silver treasures and al the valuables of Egypt wil lie in his power. Libyans andCushites wil be at his feet:	43 E si farà padrone de’ tesori d’oro, e d’argento, e di tutte le cose preziose di Egitto; e i Libii, e gli Etiopi saranno al suo seguito.
44 but reports coming from the East and the north wil worry him, and in great fury he wil set out to bringruin and complete destruction to many.	44 Ma rumori dal Levante e dal Settentrione lo turberanno; ed egli uscirà con grande ira, per distruggere, e per disperder molti.
45 He wil pitch the tents of his royal headquarters between the sea and the mountains of the HolySplendour. Yet he wil come to his end -- there wil be no help for him.'	45 E pianterà le tende del suo padiglione reale fra i mari, presso del santo monte di bellezza; poi, come sarà pervenuto al suo fine, non vi sarà alcun che l’aiuti
