1 on whom I rely to give me support and to reinforce me.	1 « Or io, fin dall'anno primo di Dario il Modo, mi tenni presso di lui a sostenerlo e fortificarlo.
2 And now I shal tell you the truth about these things. 'Three more kings are going to rise in Persia; afourth wil come and be richer than al the others, and when, thanks to his wealth, he has grown powerful, he wilmake war on al the kingdoms of Greece.	2 Ed ora ti annunzierò la verità. Ecco vi saranno ancora tre re nella Persia, e il quarto sorpasserà tutti gli altri per le più grandi ricchezze, e quando sarà potente per le sue ricchezze, inciterà tutti contro il regno della Grecia.
3 A mighty king wil rise and govern a vast empire and do whatever he pleases.	3 Ma sorgerà un re forte che dominerà con grande potenza e farà quello che gli piacerà.
4 But once he has come to power, his empire wil be broken up and parcelled out to the four winds ofheaven, though not to his descendants: it wil not be ruled as he ruled it, for his sovereignty will be uprooted andwil pass to others than his own descendants.	4 Ed esaltato che sia, il suo regno sarà infranto, e sarà diviso ai quattro venti del cielo, ma non ai suoi discendenti, e senza la potenza colla quale egli aveva dominato, perchè il suo regno sarà smembrato in mano di stranieri, eccettuati questi.
5 'The king of the south wil grow powerful, but one of his princes wil grow more powerful stil , with anempire greater than his own.	5 E il re del Mezzodì diverrà potente; ma uno dei suoi principi diverrà più forte di lui e dominerà con potenza, chè grande sarà il suo dominio.
6 Some years later, these will conclude a treaty and, to ratify the agreement, the daughter of the king ofthe south wil go to the king of the north. Her arm will not, however, retain its strength, nor his posterity endure:she wil be handed over, she, her escorts and her child, and he who has had authority over her. In due time	6 E passati varii anni faranno alleanza, e la figlia del re del Mezzodì andrà al re del Settentrione, per stabilire l'amicizia; ma non otterrà la fortezza del braccio, e non sarà stabile la sua stirpe, ed essa sarà messa a morte con la gioventù che l'aveva condotta e che l'aveva confortata in quei tempi.
7 a sprig from her roots wil rise in his place, wil march on the defences, force the stronghold of the kingof the north, and succeed in overcoming them.	7 Ma un germe delle sue radici sorgerà, e verrà con un esercito ed entrerà negli stati del re del Settentrione, e li maltratterà e ne diverrà padrone.
8 He wil even carry off al their gods, their statues, their precious gold and silver vessels as booty toEgypt. For some years he wil leave the king of the north in peace,	8 E condurrà prigioni in Egitto i loro dèi, le statue, i vasi preziosi d'argento e d'oro: egli trionferà contro il re del Settentrione.
9 but the latter will invade the kingdom of the king of the south, then retire to his own country.	9 Ed enfierà nel regno il re del Mezzodì, e tornerà alla sua terra.
10 His sons wil next be on the march, mustering a host of powerful forces; and he wil advance, deploy,break through and march on the southern stronghold once again.	10 Ma i suoi figli, irritati, raduneranno moltitudini di numerosi eserciti, e uno verrà velocemente, inonderà, e ritornerà e s'animerà e combatterà contro le forze di lui.
11 The king of the south wil fly into a rage and set out to give battle to the king of the north, who wilhave an immense army on his side, but this army wil be defeated by him.	11 E il re del Mezzodì, provocato, uscirà in campo, e combatterà contro il re del Settentrione, e metterà in ordine grandi eserciti, e una moltitudine sarà data nelle sue mani.
12 The army wil be annihilated; he wil be triumphant; he wil overthrow tens of thousands; yet he wilhave no enduring strength.	12 E farà moltitudine di prigionieri e s'insuperbirà il suo cuore, e farà cadere molte migliaia, ma non trionferà.
13 The king of the north wil come back, having recruited an even larger army than before, and final y,after some years, he wil advance a second time with a great army and plentiful supplies.	13 Perchè il re del Settentrione radunerà di nuovo eserciti molto maggiori di quelli di prima, e dopo vari anni si metterà in veloce marcia con grande esercito e immense ricchezze.
14 At that time, many wil take up arms against the king of the south, and the more violent of your ownpeople wil rebel in the hope of realising the vision; but they will fail.	14 E in quel tempo molti sorgeranno contro il re del Mezzodì, ed anche i figli dei prevaricatori del tuo popolo insorgeranno per adempire la visione, e cadranno.
15 The king of the north wil then come and throw up siege-works to capture a strongly fortified city. The forces of the south wil not stand their ground; the pick of the people will not be strong enough to resist.	15 E verrà il re del Settentrione, e innalzerà dei bastioni, e prenderà le città più fortificate, e le forze del Mezzodì non potranno resistere; le sue truppe scelte sorgeranno per resistere, ma saran senza forza.
16 The invader wil do as he pleases, no one wil be able to resist him: he will take his stand in the Landof Splendour, destruction in his hands.	16 E venendo sopra di lui farà quello che gli parrà, e nessuno gli potrà stare contro, ed egli starà nella terra illustre, che andrà in rovina nelle sue mani.
17 He wil set about conquering his entire kingdom, but wil then make a treaty with him and, tooverthrow the kingdom, give him a woman's hand; but this wil not last or be to his advantage.	17 E si proporrà di farsi avanti per occupare tutto il regno di lui, e farà dei patti giusti con lui, e gli darà la figlia delle (sue) donne per rovinarlo, ma non riuscirà ed (essa) non sarà per lui.
18 He wil next turn to the coasts and islands and conquer many of them, but a magistrate wil put a stopto his outrages in such a way that he wil be unable to repay outrage for outrage.	18 Poi si rivolgerà contro le isole e ne prenderà molte; ma un principe da lui disprezzato lo farà arrestare, e il suo obbrobrio ricadrà sopra di lui.
19 'He wil then turn on the strongholds of his own country, but wil stumble, fall, and never be seenagain.	19 E tornerà nella terra del suo impero e inciamperà e cadrà e scomparirà.
20 In his place there wil rise a man who wil send an extortioner to despoil the royal splendour; in a fewdays he wil be shattered, though neither publicly nor in battle.	20 E succederà a lui un uomo vilissimo, indegno della maestà reale, e in pochi giorni sarà infranto, non dal furore, nè in battaglia.
21 'In his place wil rise a wretch: royal honours wil not be given to him, but rather he wil insinuatehimself into them at his pleasure and wil gain possession of the kingdom by intrigue.	21 E gli succederà uno disprezzato, a cui non sarà dato l'onore di re, e verrà di nascosto, e con frode s'impadronirà del regno.
22 Armies will be utterly routed and crushed by him, the Prince of the covenant too.	22 Ma le forze di chi combatterà DAN(contro di lui) saran vinte e infrante davanti a lui, ed anche il capo dell'alleanza.
23 Through his alliances he wil act treacherously and, despite the smal ness of his fol owing, grow everstronger.	23 E dopo aver fatta amicizia con lui agirà con frode, si metterà in marcia, vincerà con poca gente.
24 At his pleasure, he wil invade rich provinces, acting as his fathers or his fathers' fathers never acted,distributing among them plunder, spoil and wealth, plotting his stratagems against the fortresses -- for a time.	24 Ed entrerà nelle città più popolose e ricche, e farà quel che non fecero i suoi padri, nè i padri dei suoi padri: rapine, saccheggi, e dissiperà le loro ricchezze, e formerà dei disegni contro le foltezze, e ciò fino a un dato tempo.
25 'He wil summon up his might and courage against the king of the south with a great army. The kingof the south wil march to war with a huge and powerful army but wil not succeed, since he will be outwitted bytrickery.	25 E la sua forza e il suo coraggio lo inciterà ad andare con grande esercito contro il re del Mezzodì; e il re del Mezzodì sarà eccitato alla guerra dai molti e fortissimi aiuti; ma non gli varranno, perchè si macchineranno contro di lui delle insidie;
26 Those who shared his food wil ruin him; his army wil be swept away, many wil fall in the slaughter.	26 I suoi commensali lo manderanno in rovina, il suo esercito sarà oppresso, e moltissimi cadranno uccisi.
27 'The two kings, seated at one table, hearts bent on evil, wil tell their lies; but they will not have theirway, for the appointed time is stil to come.	27 Ed anche i due re non penseranno che a farsi del male, ad una medesima tavola si diranno menzogne, ma non riusciranno, perchè la fine è differita ad altro tempo.
28 Then the wretch wil return greatly enriched to his own country, his heart set against the holycovenant; he wil take action and then return to his own country.	28 Ed egli tornerà nella sua terra con molte ricchezze, e avrà disegni contro il testamento santo, e li eseguirà, e tornerà nella sua terra.
29 In due time, he will make his way southwards again, but this time the outcome wil not be as before.	29 Nel tempo stabilito tornerà di nuovo contro il Mezzodì, ma quest'ultima volta non avverrà come la prima;
30 The ships of the Kittim wil oppose him, and he wil be worsted. He wil retire and take furious actionagainst the holy covenant and, as before, wil favour those who forsake that holy covenant.	30 che verranno addosso a lui le triremi e i Romani, e sarà colpito, e tornerà indietro, e, pieno d'ira contro il testamento del santuario, la sfogherà, e formerà dei disegni contro coloro che abbandonarono il testamento del santuario.
31 'Forces of his wil come and profane the Citadel-Sanctuary; they will abolish the perpetual sacrificeand instal the appal ing abomination there.	31 E le forze (mandate) da lui staran salde e contamineranno il santuario della fortezza, e toglieranno il sacrifizio perpetuo, e vi porranno l'abominazione della desolazione.
32 Those who break the covenant he wil seduce by his blandishments, but the people who know theirGod will stand firm and take action.	32 E gli empi agiranno con simulazione e frode contro il testamento; ma il popolo, che conosce il suo Dio, prevarrà ed agirà.
33 Those of the people who are wise leaders wil instruct many; for some days, however, they wilstumble from sword and flame, captivity and pil age.	33 Ed i sapienti del popolo illumineranno moltissimi, ma cadranno sotto la spada, nelle fiamme, nella schiavitù e nel dispogl lamento per un certo tempo.
34 And thus stumbling, little help wil they receive, though many will be scheming in their support.	34 E nella loro caduta saran rialzati da piccolo soccorso, e un gran numero s'unirà ad essi con frode.
35 Of the wise leaders some wil stumble, and so a number of them wil be purged, purified and madeclean -- until the time of the End, for the appointed time is stil to come.	35 E dei sapienti cadranno, per essere provati col fuoco, resi eletti e candidi fino al tempo stabilito, che rimane ancora del tempo.
36 'The king wil do as he pleases, growing more and more arrogant, considering himself greater thanal the gods; he will utter incredible blasphemies against the God of gods, and he wil thrive until the wrathreaches bursting point; for what has been decreed wil certainly be fulfil ed.	36 E il re farà quello che gli piacerà, e s'innalzerà e si magnificherà contro ogni dio, e parlerà con arroganza contro il Dio degli dèi, e gli riuscirà finché non sia sfogata tutta la collera, chè è eseguito ciò che è stato deciso.
37 Heedless of his fathers' gods, heedless of the god whom women love, heedless of any godwhatever, he wil consider himself greatest of al .	37 Egli non farà alcun conto del Dio dei suoi padri, e sarà preso dalla libidine delle donne, e non si curerà d'alcun Dio, perchè s'innalzerà contro tutte le cose.
38 Instead of them, he wil honour the god of fortresses, will honour a god unknown to his ancestorswith gold and silver, precious stones and valuable presents.	38 Ma onorerà in suo luogo il dio Maozim, questo dio ignoto ai suoi padri l'onorerà coll'oro, coll'argento, colle pietre' preziose, e con (altre) cose di pregio.
39 He wil use the people of an alien god to defend the fortresses; he will confer great honours on thosewhom he acknowledges, by giving them wide authority and by parcel ing the country out for rent.	39 E farà sì di difendere Maozim con Dio straniero, e quelli che lo riconosceranno li colmerà di onori, darà loro potestà sopra molti, e distribuirà gratuitamente la terra.
40 'When the time comes for the End, the king of the south will try conclusions with him; but the king ofthe north wil come storming down on him with chariots, cavalry, and a large fleet. He wil invade countries,overrun them and drive on.	40 E nel tempo stabilito il re del Mezzodì gli farà guerra, e il re del Settentrione piomberà sopra di lui come tempesta con cocchi, cavalieri e grande fletta, e ne invaderà le terre, e distruggerà e passerà avanti.
41 He wil invade the Land of Splendour, and many wil fal ; but Edom, Moab, and what remains of thesons of Ammon wil escape him.	41 Ed entrerà nella terra illustre, e molte genti cadranno: queste sole si salveranno dalle sue mani: Edom, Moab, e il principio dei figli d'Ammon.
42 'He wil reach out to attack countries: Egypt will not escape him.	42 E stenderà la sua mano sulle terre, e la terra d'Egitto non avrà scampo.
43 The gold and silver treasures and al the valuables of Egypt wil lie in his power. Libyans andCushites wil be at his feet:	43 E s'impadronirà dei tesori d'oro e d'argento e di tutte le cose preziose dell'Egitto, e passerà anche per la Libia e per l'Etiopia.
44 but reports coming from the East and the north wil worry him, and in great fury he wil set out to bringruin and complete destruction to many.	44 Ma verrrano a turbarlo delle notizie dall'oriente e dal settentrione, e partirà con grandi eserciti per distruggere e far grande strage.
45 He wil pitch the tents of his royal headquarters between the sea and the mountains of the HolySplendour. Yet he wil come to his end -- there wil be no help for him.'	45 E pianterà la tenda della sua dimora tra i mari, sopra il monte illustre e santo, e salirà fino alla sua cima, ma nessuno gli recherà aiuto.
