NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 on whom I rely to give me support and to reinforce me.	1 che resiste per dar forza e aiuto a me".
2 And now I shal tell you the truth about these things. 'Three more kings are going to rise in Persia; afourth wil come and be richer than al the others, and when, thanks to his wealth, he has grown powerful, he wilmake war on al the kingdoms of Greece.	2 "Ora ti annunzio la verità: ancora tre re sorgeranno per la Persia, un quarto poi accumulerà una ricchezza più grande di tutti. Quando, grazie alla sua ricchezza, sarà diventato potente, insorgerà contro tutti i regni di Grecia.
3 A mighty king wil rise and govern a vast empire and do whatever he pleases.	3 Sorgerà quindi un re potente, dominerà sopra un grande impero e farà quello che vorrà.
4 But once he has come to power, his empire wil be broken up and parcelled out to the four winds ofheaven, though not to his descendants: it wil not be ruled as he ruled it, for his sovereignty will be uprooted andwil pass to others than his own descendants.	4 Ma quando costui sarà diventato forte, il suo regno sarà frantumato e sarà diviso ai quattro venti del cielo, ma non per la sua posterità, né sarà una potenza come la potenza che egli ha avuto. Il suo regno sarà estirpato e dato ad altri, anziché alla sua discendenza.
5 'The king of the south wil grow powerful, but one of his princes wil grow more powerful stil , with anempire greater than his own.	5 Il re del sud diventerà forte; uno dei suoi prìncipi sarà più forte di lui e il suo dominio sarà più grande del dominio di lui.
6 Some years later, these will conclude a treaty and, to ratify the agreement, the daughter of the king ofthe south wil go to the king of the north. Her arm will not, however, retain its strength, nor his posterity endure:she wil be handed over, she, her escorts and her child, and he who has had authority over her. In due time	6 Dopo qualche tempo essi si alleeranno e una figlia del re del sud verrà dal re del nord per ratificare gli accordi. Ma ella non conserverà la forza del suo braccio e la sua discendenza non sopravvivrà; sarà tradita lei, colui che l'accompagna, il suo bambino e chi la sosteneva. Ai suoi tempi
7 a sprig from her roots wil rise in his place, wil march on the defences, force the stronghold of the kingof the north, and succeed in overcoming them.	7 un rampollo sorgerà dalle sue radici al posto suo. Costui marcerà contro l'esercito e penetrerà dentro la fortezza del re del nord; agirà contro costoro e vincerà.
8 He wil even carry off al their gods, their statues, their precious gold and silver vessels as booty toEgypt. For some years he wil leave the king of the north in peace,	8 Porterà via come preda in Egitto anche i loro dèi con i loro idoli, i loro vasi preziosi d'oro e d'argento. Egli per molti anni starà lontano dal re del nord.
9 but the latter will invade the kingdom of the king of the south, then retire to his own country.	9 Andrà nel regno del re del sud e tornerà nel suo territorio.
10 His sons wil next be on the march, mustering a host of powerful forces; and he wil advance, deploy,break through and march on the southern stronghold once again.	10 Suo figlio si armerà e raccoglierà una moltitudine di forze valorose, verrà contro di lui, strariperà, sommergerà; poi ritornerà e si spingerà fin dentro la fortezza.
11 The king of the south wil fly into a rage and set out to give battle to the king of the north, who wilhave an immense army on his side, but this army wil be defeated by him.	11 Allora il re del sud, infuriato, uscirà a combattere contro il re del nord; costui metterà in piedi una grande armata, ma una grande moltitudine sarà data in suo potere.
12 The army wil be annihilated; he wil be triumphant; he wil overthrow tens of thousands; yet he wilhave no enduring strength.	12 La moltitudine sarà spazzata via e il suo cuore si inorgoglirà; abbatterà miriadi, ma non acquisterà forza.
13 The king of the north wil come back, having recruited an even larger army than before, and final y,after some years, he wil advance a second time with a great army and plentiful supplies.	13 Il re del nord ritornerà, metterà in piedi un'armata più grande della precedente e dopo qualche tempo verrà decisamente con una grande armata e con molto equipaggiamento.
14 At that time, many wil take up arms against the king of the south, and the more violent of your ownpeople wil rebel in the hope of realising the vision; but they will fail.	14 In quei tempi molti insorgeranno contro il re del sud, e alcuni violenti del tuo popolo si leveranno perché si porti a compimento la visione, ma cadranno.
15 The king of the north wil then come and throw up siege-works to capture a strongly fortified city. The forces of the south wil not stand their ground; the pick of the people will not be strong enough to resist.	15 Il re del nord verrà e costruirà un terrapieno per occupare la città fortificata. Le forze del sud non resisteranno e nemmeno il manipolo dei soldati scelti avrà la forza di resistere.
16 The invader wil do as he pleases, no one wil be able to resist him: he will take his stand in the Landof Splendour, destruction in his hands.	16 Colui che gli viene contro farà quello che vorrà e nessuno gli potrà resistere; egli si fermerà nel paese dello Splendore e la distruzione sarà in suo potere.
17 He wil set about conquering his entire kingdom, but wil then make a treaty with him and, tooverthrow the kingdom, give him a woman's hand; but this wil not last or be to his advantage.	17 Poi deciderà di venire con la forza di tutto il suo regno e farà un'alleanza con lui, dandogli in moglie una delle sue figlie per distruggerlo; ma la cosa non riuscirà, non avrà successo.
18 He wil next turn to the coasts and islands and conquer many of them, but a magistrate wil put a stopto his outrages in such a way that he wil be unable to repay outrage for outrage.	18 Si volgerà quindi verso le isole e ne occuperà molte; ma un comandante porrà fine alla sua arroganza, senza che lui possa ritorcere l'oltraggio contro costui.
19 'He wil then turn on the strongholds of his own country, but wil stumble, fall, and never be seenagain.	19 Allora si rivolgerà verso le città fortificate del suo paese, ma sarà travolto, cadrà e non si ritroverà più.
20 In his place there wil rise a man who wil send an extortioner to despoil the royal splendour; in a fewdays he wil be shattered, though neither publicly nor in battle.	20 Un altro sorgerà al suo posto; costui farà passare un esattore nello splendore del suo regno. Dopo breve tempo però sarà stroncato, ma non pubblicamente né in guerra".
21 'In his place wil rise a wretch: royal honours wil not be given to him, but rather he wil insinuatehimself into them at his pleasure and wil gain possession of the kingdom by intrigue.	21 "Al suo posto sorgerà un miserabile, a cui non verrà concessa la dignità reale; ma si insinuerà pacificamente e si impadronirà del regno con intrighi.
22 Armies will be utterly routed and crushed by him, the Prince of the covenant too.	22 Le forze dell'inondazione saranno schiacciate davanti a lui e saranno infrante, come pure un principe dell'alleanza.
23 Through his alliances he wil act treacherously and, despite the smal ness of his fol owing, grow everstronger.	23 Quando si sarà fatta lega con lui, egli ordirà intrighi e diventerà forte in un piccolo popolo.
24 At his pleasure, he wil invade rich provinces, acting as his fathers or his fathers' fathers never acted,distributing among them plunder, spoil and wealth, plotting his stratagems against the fortresses -- for a time.	24 Indisturbato verrà nelle regioni più fertili della provincia e farà quello che non avevano fatto i suoi avi né gli avi dei suoi avi. Distribuirà tra di loro spoglie, bottino e ricchezze; concepirà piani contro la città forte, ma solo per un certo tempo.
25 'He wil summon up his might and courage against the king of the south with a great army. The kingof the south wil march to war with a huge and powerful army but wil not succeed, since he will be outwitted bytrickery.	25 Egli rivolgerà la sua forza e il suo cuore contro il re del sud con un grande esercito. Il re del sud si preparerà alla guerra con un esercito grande e molto forte, ma non resisterà, perché si formeranno complotti contro di lui.
26 Those who shared his food wil ruin him; his army wil be swept away, many wil fall in the slaughter.	26 Proprio coloro che condividono la sua stessa mensa lo rovineranno, il suo esercito sarà sopraffatto e molti cadranno feriti.
27 'The two kings, seated at one table, hearts bent on evil, wil tell their lies; but they will not have theirway, for the appointed time is stil to come.	27 I due re, avendo il loro cuore rivolto al male, sedendo alla stessa mensa, si inganneranno a vicenda. Ma a nulla gioverà, perché la fine non è ancora fissata.
28 Then the wretch wil return greatly enriched to his own country, his heart set against the holycovenant; he wil take action and then return to his own country.	28 Egli prenderà la via del ritorno verso il suo paese con grande ricchezza, ma il suo cuore sarà contro l'alleanza santa. Compiuto quello che vorrà, ritornerà al suo paese.
29 In due time, he will make his way southwards again, but this time the outcome wil not be as before.	29 Al tempo fissato ritornerà nel sud, ma questa volta non sarà come la prima.
30 The ships of the Kittim wil oppose him, and he wil be worsted. He wil retire and take furious actionagainst the holy covenant and, as before, wil favour those who forsake that holy covenant.	30 Le navi dei Kittim verranno contro di lui ed egli rimarrà senza coraggio. Al suo ritorno infierirà contro l'alleanza santa; egli agirà e nuovamente si intenderà con coloro che abbandonano l'alleanza santa.
31 'Forces of his wil come and profane the Citadel-Sanctuary; they will abolish the perpetual sacrificeand instal the appal ing abomination there.	31 Le sue forze si leveranno a profanare il santuario-fortezza; aboliranno il sacrificio perpetuo e innalzeranno l'abominio della desolazione.
32 Those who break the covenant he wil seduce by his blandishments, but the people who know theirGod will stand firm and take action.	32 Con lusinghe farà apostatare i prevaricatori dell'alleanza; ma il popolo di coloro che conoscono il loro Dio rimarrà saldo e agirà.
33 Those of the people who are wise leaders wil instruct many; for some days, however, they wilstumble from sword and flame, captivity and pil age.	33 I maestri del popolo cercheranno di illuminare le folle, ma cadranno per la spada, il fuoco, la prigionia e l'esilio per lunghi giorni.
34 And thus stumbling, little help wil they receive, though many will be scheming in their support.	34 Mentre essi cadranno, pochi verranno in loro aiuto, molti si assoceranno ad essi senza sincerità.
35 Of the wise leaders some wil stumble, and so a number of them wil be purged, purified and madeclean -- until the time of the End, for the appointed time is stil to come.	35 Tra i dotti ci sarà chi soccomberà, perché tra di loro alcuni siano provati, eletti, purificati sino al tempo della fine, perché ancora il tempo non è fissato.
36 'The king wil do as he pleases, growing more and more arrogant, considering himself greater thanal the gods; he will utter incredible blasphemies against the God of gods, and he wil thrive until the wrathreaches bursting point; for what has been decreed wil certainly be fulfil ed.	36 Il re agirà secondo il suo piacere, si esalterà e si eleverà al di sopra di ogni dio e contro il Dio degli dèi dirà cose inaudite. Egli avrà successo finché la collera sia al colmo, perché quanto è decretato si compirà.
37 Heedless of his fathers' gods, heedless of the god whom women love, heedless of any godwhatever, he wil consider himself greatest of al .	37 Non avrà riguardo per gli dèi dei suoi avi né per la dea favorita delle donne; non avrà riguardo per nessuna divinità, perché si innalzerà al di sopra di tutto.
38 Instead of them, he wil honour the god of fortresses, will honour a god unknown to his ancestorswith gold and silver, precious stones and valuable presents.	38 Al loro posto adorerà il dio delle fortezze; adorerà con oro, argento, pietre preziose e gioielli un dio che i suoi padri non hanno conosciuto.
39 He wil use the people of an alien god to defend the fortresses; he will confer great honours on thosewhom he acknowledges, by giving them wide authority and by parcel ing the country out for rent.	39 Prenderà come difensori delle fortezze genti di un dio straniero. Ricolmerà di onore coloro che egli riconoscerà, darà loro il potere su molti e in ricompensa darà loro la terra in possesso".
40 'When the time comes for the End, the king of the south will try conclusions with him; but the king ofthe north wil come storming down on him with chariots, cavalry, and a large fleet. He wil invade countries,overrun them and drive on.	40 "Al tempo della fine il re del sud si affronterà con lui. Il re del nord precipiterà su di lui con carri, cavalieri e con molte navi; entrerà nei territori di costui, li inonderà e li sommergerà.
41 He wil invade the Land of Splendour, and many wil fal ; but Edom, Moab, and what remains of thesons of Ammon wil escape him.	41 Verrà nel paese dello Splendore e molti cadranno, ma scamperanno dalle sue mani i seguenti: Edom, Moab e il resto dei figli di Ammon.
42 'He wil reach out to attack countries: Egypt will not escape him.	42 Metterà la sua mano sui territori e il paese d'Egitto non sfuggirà.
43 The gold and silver treasures and al the valuables of Egypt wil lie in his power. Libyans andCushites wil be at his feet:	43 S'impadronirà dei tesori d'oro e d'argento e di tutte le cose preziose d'Egitto; i Libici e gli Etiopi saranno ai suoi piedi.
44 but reports coming from the East and the north wil worry him, and in great fury he wil set out to bringruin and complete destruction to many.	44 Ma rumori dall'oriente e dal settentrione lo turberanno e accorrerà con grande furore per distruggere e annientare molti.
45 He wil pitch the tents of his royal headquarters between the sea and the mountains of the HolySplendour. Yet he wil come to his end -- there wil be no help for him.'	45 Pianterà le tende del suo quartiere tra il mare e il monte santo dello Splendore. Ma giungerà alla sua fine e nessuno lo aiuterà".
