1 And this is the false argument they use, 'Our life is short and dreary, there is no remedy when our endcomes, no one is known to have come back from Hades.	1 Or gli empi nei loro storti pen­samenti van dicendo: « Corto e pieno di noia è il tempo della nostra vita, non v'è rimedio quando l'uomo è alla fine, e non si conosce persona che sia tornata dal­l'altro mondo.
2 We came into being by chance and afterwards shal be as though we had never been. The breath in ournostrils is a puff of smoke, reason a spark from the beating of our hearts;	2 Essendo noi venuti dal niente, dopo saremo come se non fossimo mai stati, per­chè l'alito delle nostre nari è fu­mo, e il parlare è scintilla pro­ dotta dal moto del cuore.
3 extinguish this and the body turns to ashes, and the spirit melts away like the yielding air.	3 Quando questa sarà spenta, il nostro corpo andrà in cenere, e lo spirto si disperderà come aria leggera. La nostra vita passerà come trac­cia di nube, sparirà come nebbia cacciata dai raggi del sole e sopraffatta dal calore di lui.
4 In time, our name wil be forgotten, nobody wil remember what we have done; our life will pass awaylike wisps of cloud, dissolving like the mist that the sun's rays drive away and that its heat dispels.	4 E il nostro nome sarà col tempo di­menticato, e nessuno si ricorderà più delle opere nostre.
5 For our days are the passing of a shadow, our end is without return, the seal is affixed and nobodycomes back.	5 Un'ombra che passa è la nostra vita, la nostra è una partenza senza ritorno. Quando il sigillo è messo, nessuno ritorna.
6 'Come then, let us enjoy the good things of today, let us use created things with the zest of youth:	6 Venite adunque, godiamoci, i beni presenti, e come nella gioventù, in fretta approfittiamoci delle creature.
7 take our fil of the dearest wines and perfumes, on no account forgo the flowers of spring	7 Empiamoci di vino prelibato e di profumi, non la­sciamo passare il fiore della sta­gione.
8 but crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither,	8 Coroniamoci di rose pri­ma che avvizziscano; non vi resti prato dove non sia passata la nostra lussuria.
9 no meadow excluded from our orgy; let us leave the signs of our revelry everywhere, since this is ourportion, this our lot!	9 Nessuno di noi manchi alle nostre orgie, dappertutto lasciamo i segni della no­stra allegria, perchè questa è la nostra parte, la nostra sorte.
10 'As for the upright man who is poor, let us oppress him; let us not spare the widow, nor respect oldage, white-haired with many years.	10 Opprimiamo il giusto povero, non risparmiamo la vedova, nè si abbia riguardo alla canizie del vec­chio carico di anni.
11 Let our might be the yardstick of right, since weakness argues its own futility.	11 Sia la forza il nostro diritto: ciò che è debole è stimato buono a nulla.
12 Let us lay traps for the upright man, since he annoys us and opposes our way of life, reproaches us forour sins against the Law, and accuses us of sins against our upbringing.	12 Mettia­mo adunque in mezzo il giusto, perchè c'è d'incomodo, s'oppone allo nostre azioni, ci rinfaccia i peccati contro la legge, propala a nostro danno i peccati della no­ stra condotta,
13 He claims to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord.	13 pretende d'avere la scienza, di Dio e si chiama figlio di Dio.
14 We see him as a reproof to our way of thinking, the very sight of him weighs our spirits down;	14 Egli è diventato il censore dei nostri pensieri:
15 for his kind of life is not like other people's, and his ways are quite different.	15 è per noi gravoso anche il vederlo, per­chè la sua, vita non è come quella degli altri, e singolare è il suo modo d'agire.
16 In his opinion we are counterfeit; he avoids our ways as he would filth; he proclaims the final end of theupright as blessed and boasts of having God for his father.	16 Egli ci tiene come leggeri, schiva il nostro modo di fare come immondezza, preferi­sce la fine dei giusti e si vanta d'a­ vere per padre Dio.
17 Let us see if what he says is true, and test him to see what sort of end he wil have.	17 Vediamo un po' se le sue parole son veraci, proviamo quel che sarà di lui, ve­diamo come va a finire.
18 For if the upright man is God's son, God wil help him and rescue him from the clutches of hisenemies.	18 Se egli è veramente figlio di Dio, Dio verrà a difenderlo, a salvarlo dal­le mani degli avversari.
19 Let us test him with cruelty and with torture, and thus explore this gentleness of his and put hispatience to the test.	19 Mettiamolo alla prova cogli oltraggi e coi tormenti, per conoscere la sua rassegnazione e sperimentare la sua pazienza.
20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death since God wil rescue him -- or so he claims.'	20 Condanniamolo alla morte più ignominiosa: giacché, secondo le sue parole, vi sa­rà chi avrà cura di lui ».
21 This is the way they reason, but they are misled, since their malice makes them blind.	21 Così han pensato; ma s'ingan­nano, accecati dalla loro malizia.
22 They do not know the hidden things of God, they do not hope for the reward of holiness, they do notbelieve in a reward for blameless souls.	22 Essi ignorano i segreti di Dio, non sperano nella ricompensa della giustizia, non fanno alcuna stima, dell'onore delle anime san­ te.
23 For God created human beings to be immortal, he made them as an image of his own nature;	23 Infatti Dio creò l'uomo per l'immortalità, e lo fece a sua imagine e somiglianza;
24 Death came into the world only through the Devil's envy, as those who belong to him find to their cost.	24 ma per l'invidia del diavolo entrò nel mondo la morte,
	25 e lo imitano quelli del suo partito.
