NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 And this is the false argument they use, 'Our life is short and dreary, there is no remedy when our endcomes, no one is known to have come back from Hades.	1 Han detto tra sè sragionando:« Breve e molesto è il tempo di nostra vita, e non c’è rimedio quando per uno è giunta la fine, nè si sa di alcuno che sia tornato dagli Inferi!
2 We came into being by chance and afterwards shal be as though we had never been. The breath in ournostrils is a puff of smoke, reason a spark from the beating of our hearts;	2 Per caso slam venuti all’esistenza, e saremo poi come non fossimo mai stati. È fumo il soffio delle nostre nari, e il parlare, una scintilla [prodottai dal movimento del nostro cuore.
3 extinguish this and the body turns to ashes, and the spirit melts away like the yielding air.	3 Spenta questa, si ridurrà in cenere il nostro corpo, lo spirito si dissiperà come aria leggera. Passerà la vita nostra come una nube, e si scioglierà come nebbia, ch’è spinta via dai raggi del sole, e precipitata dal suo calore.
4 In time, our name wil be forgotten, nobody wil remember what we have done; our life will pass awaylike wisps of cloud, dissolving like the mist that the sun's rays drive away and that its heat dispels.	4 Sarà dimenticato il nostro nome col tempo, e nessuno ricorderà le opere nostre.
5 For our days are the passing of a shadow, our end is without return, the seal is affixed and nobodycomes back.	5 Il passar d’un’ombra è la nostra vita, nè c'è ritorno della nostra fine: c’è tanto di sigillo, e nessuno torna indietro!
6 'Come then, let us enjoy the good things of today, let us use created things with the zest of youth:	6 Su via dunque, godiamo de, beni presenti, e usiamo solleciti del creato, a mo’ di giovani.
7 take our fil of the dearest wines and perfumes, on no account forgo the flowers of spring	7 Riempiamoci di vino prezioso e di profumi, e non ci sfugga via il fiore della [bella] stagione;
8 but crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither,	8 coroniamoci di rose, prima che appassiscano: non siavi prato, che la nostra voluttà non percorra.
9 no meadow excluded from our orgy; let us leave the signs of our revelry everywhere, since this is ourportion, this our lot!	9 Nessuno ci sia di noi, che non partecipi alle nostre baldorie; dappertutto lasciam ricordi del [nostro] godimento: perchè questa è la nostra porzione, e questa la [nostra] sorte.
10 'As for the upright man who is poor, let us oppress him; let us not spare the widow, nor respect oldage, white-haired with many years.	10 Opprimiamo il giusto ch' è povero, non risparmiamo la vedova, non portiam rispetto alla longeva canizie del vegliardo.
11 Let our might be the yardstick of right, since weakness argues its own futility.	11 La forza nostra sia la norma di giustizia, perchè ciò ch’è debole non è buono a nulla.
12 Let us lay traps for the upright man, since he annoys us and opposes our way of life, reproaches us forour sins against the Law, and accuses us of sins against our upbringing.	12 Tendiamo insidie al giusto, poiché c’ è d’imbarazzo, e si oppone alle nostre opere, e si rinfaccia i falli contro la legge, e ci rimbrotta le colpe della nostra condotta.
13 He claims to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord.	13 Si vanta d’aver lui la conoscenza di Dio, e chiama se stesso figliuolo del Signore!
14 We see him as a reproof to our way of thinking, the very sight of him weighs our spirits down;	14 è diventato un rimprovero [vivente] de' nostri pensieri,
15 for his kind of life is not like other people's, and his ways are quite different.	15 e c’è uggioso anche al vederlo; perchè diversa dagli altri è la sua vita e stravaganti son le sue vie.
16 In his opinion we are counterfeit; he avoids our ways as he would filth; he proclaims the final end of theupright as blessed and boasts of having God for his father.	16 Ci reputa come gente frivola [e falsa], e si tien lontano dalle nostre vie come da immondezze; proclama beata la fine de’ giusti e si gloria d’aver Dio per padre.
17 Let us see if what he says is true, and test him to see what sort of end he wil have.	17 Vediam dunque se son veri i suoi discorsi, e facciam la prova di ciò che gli accadrà sul punto d’andarsene.
18 For if the upright man is God's son, God wil help him and rescue him from the clutches of hisenemies.	18 perchè se il giusto è figliuolo di Dio, [Dio] verrà in suo aiuto, e lo trarrà in salvo dalle mani de’ suoi avversari.
19 Let us test him with cruelty and with torture, and thus explore this gentleness of his and put hispatience to the test.	19 Proviamolo con l’ingiuria e i maltrattamenti per conoscer la sua mansuetudine, e saggiar la sua pazienza.
20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death since God wil rescue him -- or so he claims.'	20 Condanniamolo a morte vergognosa, giacché, a quanto dice, c’è chi si piglierà cura di lui!»
21 This is the way they reason, but they are misled, since their malice makes them blind.	21 Così ragionano e s’ingannano, poiché la loro malizia gli ha accecati.
22 They do not know the hidden things of God, they do not hope for the reward of holiness, they do notbelieve in a reward for blameless souls.	22 E non intendono i misteri di Dio, nè sperano ricompensa della giustizia, [e santità], nè apprezzano il premio delle anime senza macchia.
23 For God created human beings to be immortal, he made them as an image of his own nature;	23 Dio invero creò l’uomo per l’immortalità, e lo fece ad immagine della sua propria natura.
24 Death came into the world only through the Devil's envy, as those who belong to him find to their cost.	24 Ma per invidia del diavolo entrò la morte nel mondo,
	25 e l’assaggeranno quei che a lui appartengono!
