1 And this is the false argument they use, 'Our life is short and dreary, there is no remedy when our endcomes, no one is known to have come back from Hades.	1 Imperocchè negli storti loro pensamenti vanno dicendo: Corto, e tedioso è il tempo di nostra vita, e non v'è riparo per l'uomo dopo il suo fine, e non v'ha chi sappiasi esser tornato dall'inferno:
2 We came into being by chance and afterwards shal be as though we had never been. The breath in ournostrils is a puff of smoke, reason a spark from the beating of our hearts;	2 Perocché noi siam nati dal nulla, e poscia saremo come se non fossimo stati giammai, perché il fiato delle nostre narici è un fumo: e la loquela è una scintilla veniente dal movimento del nostro cuore:
3 extinguish this and the body turns to ashes, and the spirit melts away like the yielding air.	3 Spenta la quale il corpo nostro sarà cenere, e lo spirito si dissiperà come un aere leggero, e la nostra vita passerà come la traccia di una nuvola, e si scioglierà come nebbia battuta dai raggi del sole, e dal calore di esso disciolta:
4 In time, our name wil be forgotten, nobody wil remember what we have done; our life will pass awaylike wisps of cloud, dissolving like the mist that the sun's rays drive away and that its heat dispels.	4 E il nome nostro sarà dimenticato col tempo, e nissuno avrà memoria delle opere nostre.
5 For our days are the passing of a shadow, our end is without return, the seal is affixed and nobodycomes back.	5 Perocché il nostro tempo è un'ombra, che passa, e finiti che siamo non si torna da capo, si mette il sigillo, e nissuno non torna indietro.
6 'Come then, let us enjoy the good things of today, let us use created things with the zest of youth:	6 Su via adunque godiam de' beni presenti, e delle creature facciamo uso frettolosamente, giovani come siamo;
7 take our fil of the dearest wines and perfumes, on no account forgo the flowers of spring	7 Empiamoci di prezioso vino, e di unguenti, e non si lasci fuggire il fiore della stagione.
8 but crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither,	8 Coroniamoci di rose prima che appassiscano, non siavi prato, per cui non passeggi la nostra cupidità.
9 no meadow excluded from our orgy; let us leave the signs of our revelry everywhere, since this is ourportion, this our lot!	9 Nissuno sia di noi, che non partecipi de' nostri sollazzi; lascinsi in ogni luogo i segnali di nostra galloria; perocché questa è la nostra porzione, e la (nostra) sorte.
10 'As for the upright man who is poor, let us oppress him; let us not spare the widow, nor respect oldage, white-haired with many years.	10 Si opprima il giusto, che è povero, e non si abbia pietà della vedova, e non si abbia rispetto alla antica canizie dei vecchi.
11 Let our might be the yardstick of right, since weakness argues its own futility.	11 E il (nostro) potere sia nostra legge di giustizia; imperocché quello, che è senza forze si vede, che non è buono, a nulla.
12 Let us lay traps for the upright man, since he annoys us and opposes our way of life, reproaches us forour sins against the Law, and accuses us of sins against our upbringing.	12 Noi adunque mettiamo in mezzo il giusto, perché egli non è buono per noi, ed è contrario alle opere nostre, rinfaccia a noi i peccati contro la legge, e propala in nostro danno i mancamenti del nostro modo di vivere.
13 He claims to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord.	13 Si vanta di aver la scienza di Dio, e si da il nome di figliuolo di Dio.
14 We see him as a reproof to our way of thinking, the very sight of him weighs our spirits down;	14 Egli è diventato il censore dei nostri pensieri.
15 for his kind of life is not like other people's, and his ways are quite different.	15 E penosa cosa per noi anche il vederlo, perché la vita di lui non è come quella degli altri, e diverse son le sue vie.
16 In his opinion we are counterfeit; he avoids our ways as he would filth; he proclaims the final end of theupright as blessed and boasts of having God for his father.	16 Siamo stati riputati da lui come gente da nulla, ed egli schiva le nostre costumanze come immondezze, e preferisce la fine de' giusti, e ai gloria di aver per padre Iddio.
17 Let us see if what he says is true, and test him to see what sort of end he wil have.	17 Vedasi adunque se le sue parole siano veraci, e proviamo quel, ch'abbia da essere di lui, e vedremo dov'egli anderà a finire.
18 For if the upright man is God's son, God wil help him and rescue him from the clutches of hisenemies.	18 Perocché se egli o vero figliuolo di Dio, questi il difenderà, e lo salverà dalle mani degli avversarj.
19 Let us test him with cruelty and with torture, and thus explore this gentleness of his and put hispatience to the test.	19 Proviamolo colle contumelie, e co' tormenti per vedere la sua rassegnazione, e conoscere qual sia la sua pazienza.
20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death since God wil rescue him -- or so he claims.'	20 Condanniamolo a morte sommamente obbrobriosa; perocché vi sarà chi avrà cura di lui giusta le sue parole.
21 This is the way they reason, but they are misled, since their malice makes them blind.	21 Così hanno pensato, e son caduti in errore; perocché la loro malizia gli ha accecati.
22 They do not know the hidden things of God, they do not hope for the reward of holiness, they do notbelieve in a reward for blameless souls.	22 E non intesero i misteri di Dio, e non isperarono ricompensa della giustizia, e non fecero stima dell'onore serbato alle anime sante.
23 For God created human beings to be immortal, he made them as an image of his own nature;	23 Imperocché Dio creò l'uomo per la incorruzione, e lo fece a sua immagine, e somiglianza.
24 Death came into the world only through the Devil's envy, as those who belong to him find to their cost.	24 Ma per l'invidia del diavolo entrò nel mondo la morte.
	25 E lui imitano quelli, che a lui appartengono.
