NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 And this is the false argument they use, 'Our life is short and dreary, there is no remedy when our endcomes, no one is known to have come back from Hades.	1 Dicono tra loro non ragionando rettamente: "Breve e triste è la nostra vita, il rimedio non sta nella fine dell'uomo, né si conosce chi sia tornato dagl'inferi.
2 We came into being by chance and afterwards shal be as though we had never been. The breath in ournostrils is a puff of smoke, reason a spark from the beating of our hearts;	2 Per caso siamo nati e dopo morte saremo come se non fossimo stati: fumo è il soffio nelle nostre narici e la parola è una scintilla nel palpito del nostro cuore,
3 extinguish this and the body turns to ashes, and the spirit melts away like the yielding air.	3 spenta la quale, il corpo diventerà cenere e lo spirito si disperderà come aura leggera.
4 In time, our name wil be forgotten, nobody wil remember what we have done; our life will pass awaylike wisps of cloud, dissolving like the mist that the sun's rays drive away and that its heat dispels.	4 Anche il nostro nome sarà dimenticato col tempo e nessuno si ricorderà delle nostre opere. La nostra vita passerà come traccia di nube e si disperderà come nebbia sospinta dai raggi del sole e dal suo calore colpita.
5 For our days are the passing of a shadow, our end is without return, the seal is affixed and nobodycomes back.	5 Passaggio d'ombra è il nostro tempo e non c'è rimedio alla nostra fine, perché il sigillo è posto e nessuno può tornare indietro.
6 'Come then, let us enjoy the good things of today, let us use created things with the zest of youth:	6 Su, dunque, godiamo dei beni presenti e facciamo uso delle cose create con ardore giovanile!
7 take our fil of the dearest wines and perfumes, on no account forgo the flowers of spring	7 Inebriamoci di vino pregiato e di profumi e non lasciamoci sfuggire alcun fiore primaverile,
8 but crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither,	8 coroniamoci di boccioli di rose prima che appassiscano;
9 no meadow excluded from our orgy; let us leave the signs of our revelry everywhere, since this is ourportion, this our lot!	9 nessuno di noi manchi alle nostre orge, ovunque lasciamo segni di allegria, perché questa è la nostra porzione e questa la sorte.
10 'As for the upright man who is poor, let us oppress him; let us not spare the widow, nor respect oldage, white-haired with many years.	10 Opprimiamo il giusto povero, non risparmiamo le vedove, né rispettiamo la longeva canizie del vecchio.
11 Let our might be the yardstick of right, since weakness argues its own futility.	11 La nostra forza sia legge di giustizia, perché ciò che è debole si dimostra inutile.
12 Let us lay traps for the upright man, since he annoys us and opposes our way of life, reproaches us forour sins against the Law, and accuses us of sins against our upbringing.	12 Tendiamo insidie al giusto, perché ci è molesto, si oppone alle nostre azioni, ci rinfaccia le trasgressioni della legge e ci rimprovera le trasgressioni contro la nostra educazione.
13 He claims to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord.	13 Proclama di possedere la conoscenza di Dio e si dichiara servo del Signore.
14 We see him as a reproof to our way of thinking, the very sight of him weighs our spirits down;	14 E' diventato per noi un'accusa dei nostri pensieri; ci è pesante anche il vederlo,
15 for his kind of life is not like other people's, and his ways are quite different.	15 perché diversa dagli altri è la sua vita e singolare la sua condotta.
16 In his opinion we are counterfeit; he avoids our ways as he would filth; he proclaims the final end of theupright as blessed and boasts of having God for his father.	16 Siamo considerati da lui come bastardi e si tiene lontano dalle nostre vie come dalle impurità; dichiara beata la fine dei giusti e si vanta di aver Dio per padre.
17 Let us see if what he says is true, and test him to see what sort of end he wil have.	17 Vediamo se le sue parole sono vere e proviamo ciò che ne sarà della sua fine.
18 For if the upright man is God's son, God wil help him and rescue him from the clutches of hisenemies.	18 Se il giusto è veramente figlio di Dio, egli lo soccorrerà e lo libererà dalle mani degli avversari.
19 Let us test him with cruelty and with torture, and thus explore this gentleness of his and put hispatience to the test.	19 Mettiamolo alla prova con oltraggi e tormenti, per conoscere la sua mitezza ed esaminare la sua sopportazione del male;
20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death since God wil rescue him -- or so he claims.'	20 condanniamolo a una morte ignominiosa, perché, secondo le sue parole, Dio si prenderà cura di lui".
21 This is the way they reason, but they are misled, since their malice makes them blind.	21 Così ragionano, ma s'ingannano; la loro malizia infatti li ha accecati:
22 They do not know the hidden things of God, they do not hope for the reward of holiness, they do notbelieve in a reward for blameless souls.	22 non conoscono i misteri di Dio, non sperano ricompensa per la pietà, né stimano il premio delle anime irreprensibili.
23 For God created human beings to be immortal, he made them as an image of his own nature;	23 Sì, Dio ha creato l'uomo per l'incorruttibilità e lo ha fatto a immagine della propria natura;
24 Death came into the world only through the Devil's envy, as those who belong to him find to their cost.	24 ma per invidia del diavolo la morte è entrata nel mondo e ne fanno esperienza quanti sono del suo numero.
