New Jerusalem Bible La Biblia
But the godless were assailed by merciless anger to the very end, for he knew beforehand what theywould do,1 Pero sobre los impíos descargó hasta el fin una ira despiadada, | porque Dios sabía de antemano lo que iban a hacer:
how, after letting his people leave and hastening their departure, they would change their minds andgive chase.2 que, tras dejarlos marchar y urgirlos con prisas, | cambiarían de parecer y saldrían a perseguirlos.
They were actual y stil conducting their mourning rites and lamenting at the tombs of their dead, whenanother mad scheme came into their heads and they set out to pursue, as though runaways, the people whomthey had expel ed and begged to go.3 De hecho, aún estaban en los funerales | y llorando sobre las tumbas de los muertos, | cuando concibieron otro plan disparatado, | y a los que antes habían suplicado para que se fueran, | los persiguieron como fugitivos.
A wel -deserved fate urged them to this extreme and made them forget what had already happened,so that they would add to their torments the one punishment outstanding4 Su merecido destino los arrastraba a tales extremos | y los hacía olvidarse del pasado, | para que completaran el castigo que aún faltaba a sus tormentos
and, while your people were experiencing a journey contrary to al expectations, would themselvesmeet an extraordinary death.5 y, mientras tu pueblo realizaba un viaje maravilloso, | encontraran ellos una muerte insólita.
For the whole creation, submissive to your commands, had its very nature re-created, so that yourchildren should be preserved from harm.6 Porque toda la creación, obediente a tus órdenes, | cambió radicalmente su misma naturaleza, | para guardar incólumes a tus hijos.
Overshadowing the camp there was the cloud; where there had been water, dry land was seen to rise;the Red Sea became an unimpeded way, the tempestuous waves, a green plain;7 Se vio una nube que daba sombra al campamento, | la tierra firme que emergía donde antes había agua, | el mar Rojo convertido en un camino practicable | y el oleaje impetuoso en una verde llanura,
sheltered by your hand, the whole nation passed across, gazing at these amazing prodigies.8 por donde pasaron en masa los protegidos por tu mano, | contemplando prodigios admirables.
They were like horses at pasture, they skipped like lambs, singing your praises, Lord, their deliverer.9 Pacían como caballos, | y retozaban como corderos, | alabándote a ti, Señor, su libertador.
For they stil remembered the events of their exile, how the land had bred mosquitoes instead ofanimals and the River had disgorged mil ions of frogs instead of fish.10 Todavía recordaban lo sucedido en su destierro: | cómo la tierra, y no los animales, produjo mosquitos, | y cómo el río, en lugar de peces, arrojó multitud de ranas.
Later they were to see a new way for birds to come into being, when, goaded by greed, theydemanded something tasty,11 Más tarde vieron también un nuevo modo de nacer las aves, | cuando, acuciados por el apetito, pidieron manjares exquisitos
and quails came up out of the sea to satisfy them.12 y, para satisfacerlos, salieron del mar las codornices.
On the sinners, however, punishments rained down not without violent thunder as early warning; andthey suffered what their own crimes had justly deserved since they had shown such bitter hatred to foreigners.13 Y los castigos cayeron sobre los pecadores, | no sin el previo aviso de violentos rayos, | pues justamente sufrían por sus propias maldades | y por haber albergado el odio más feroz contra los extranjeros.
Others, indeed, had failed to welcome strangers who came to them, but the Egyptians had enslavedtheir own guests and benefactors.14 Hubo quienes no acogieron a unos visitantes desconocidos, | pero estos esclavizaron a unos huéspedes bienhechores.
The sinners, moreover, will certainly be punished for it, since they gave the foreigners a hostilewelcome;15 Más aún —y de eso se les pedirá cuentas—, | acogieron hostilmente a los extranjeros;
but the latter, having given a festive reception to people who already shared the same rights asthemselves, later overwhelmed them with terrible labours.16 pero estos, después de recibir con agasajos | a los que gozaban de los mismos derechos que ellos, | los maltrataron con trabajos terribles.
Hence they were struck with blindness, like the sinners at the gate of the upright, when, yawningdarkness all around them, each had to grope his way through his own door.17 Y también fueron heridos de ceguera, | como aquellos que a la puerta del justo Lot, | envueltos en densas tinieblas, | buscaban cada uno la entrada de su puerta.
A new attuning of the elements occurred, as on a harp the notes may change their rhythm, though althe while preserving the same tone; and this is just what happened:18 Los elementos se intercambiaban sus propiedades, | igual que los sonidos del arpa pueden cambiar el ritmo, | manteniendo la misma tonalidad. | Y esto se deduce claramente a la vista de lo sucedido;
land animals became aquatic, swimming ones took to the land,19 pues los seres terrestres se volvían acuáticos, | y los que nadan se paseaban por la tierra.
fire reinforced its strength in water, and water forgot the power of extinguishing it;20 El fuego aumentaba en el agua su propia fuerza | y el agua olvidaba su poder extintor.
flames, on the other hand, did not char the flesh of delicate animals that ventured into them; nor didthey melt the heavenly food resembling ice and as easily melted.21 Las llamas, por el contrario, no consumían las carnes | de los débiles animales que entre ellas caminaban, | ni derretían aquella especie de manjar divino, | parecido a la escarcha y tan fácil de derretir.
Yes, Lord, in every way you have made your people great and glorious; you have never failed to helpthem at any time or place.22 En todo, Señor, engrandeciste y glorificaste a tu pueblo, | y no dejaste de asistirle en todo tiempo y lugar.
