1 But the godless were assailed by merciless anger to the very end, for he knew beforehand what theywould do,	1 Ma sopra gli empi sino alla fine pesò senza pietà l'ira (di Dio), perchè di loro prevedeva anche il futuro,
2 how, after letting his people leave and hastening their departure, they would change their minds andgive chase.	2 che cioè, dopo aver loro permesso d'andarsene ed averli spediti con grande premura, cam­biato proposito, li avrebbero in­ seguiti.
3 They were actual y stil conducting their mourning rites and lamenting at the tombs of their dead, whenanother mad scheme came into their heads and they set out to pursue, as though runaways, the people whomthey had expel ed and begged to go.	3 Erano infatti ancora in­volti nel lutto e spargevano la­ crime sulle tombe dei morti, quando si appigliarono ad altro stolto consiglio, e perseguitava­no come fuggiaschi quelli che pri­ma avevano scongiurato ad an­darsene.
4 A wel -deserved fate urged them to this extreme and made them forget what had already happened,so that they would add to their torments the one punishment outstanding	4 A tal fine li trascinava ben meritata fatalità: perdevan la memoria di ciò che era accadu­to, affinchè nuovo castigo com­pletasse ciò che mancava ai loro tormenti,
5 and, while your people were experiencing a journey contrary to al expectations, would themselvesmeet an extraordinary death.	5 e il tuo popolo avesse il miracoloso passaggio, quelli invece trovassero un nuovo ge­nere di morte;
6 For the whole creation, submissive to your commands, had its very nature re-created, so that yourchildren should be preserved from harm.	6 che ogni creatu­ra, nel suo genere, prendeva nuo­ve forme, compiendo i tuoi pre­cetti, per conservar illesi i tuoi figli.
7 Overshadowing the camp there was the cloud; where there had been water, dry land was seen to rise;the Red Sea became an unimpeded way, the tempestuous waves, a green plain;	7 Così la nuvola ombreggia­va i loro accampamenti, e dove prima era l'acqua comparve la terra asciutta, e nel Mar Rosso una via senza ostacoli, e nel pro­fondo dell'abisso una verdeggian­te campagna,
8 sheltered by your hand, the whole nation passed across, gazing at these amazing prodigies.	8 per cui passò tutta la nazione, protetta dalla tua mano, spettatrice delle tue ma­raviglie, dei tuoi prodigi.
9 They were like horses at pasture, they skipped like lambs, singing your praises, Lord, their deliverer.	9 Come cavalli furon ben pasciuti, come agnelli saltellarono, magnifican­do te, o Signore, che li avevi sal­vati.
10 For they stil remembered the events of their exile, how the land had bred mosquitoes instead ofanimals and the River had disgorged mil ions of frogs instead of fish.	10 Si ricordavano ancora di ciò che era accaduto durante il loro soggiorno in paese straniero, come in cambio di parti di bestia­ me la terra produsse delle mo­sche, e in luogo dei pesci il fiume gettò fuori branchi di ranocchi,
11 Later they were to see a new way for birds to come into being, when, goaded by greed, theydemanded something tasty,	11 Finalmente videro una nuova razza d'uccelli, quando, spinti dall'ingordigia, chiesero cibi squisiti.
12 and quails came up out of the sea to satisfy them.	12 Ad appagare il loro desiderio saliron dal mare le quaglie. Inve­ce sopra i peccatori piombarono i castighi, non senza indizi, dati avanti a furia di fulmini. Essi in­fatti eran giustamente puniti se­condo la loro malvagità,
13 On the sinners, however, punishments rained down not without violent thunder as early warning; andthey suffered what their own crimes had justly deserved since they had shown such bitter hatred to foreigners.	13 perchè furon dei piò detestabili inospi­ tali: gli uni non ricevendo ospiti sconosciuti; gli altri riducendo in schiavitù ospiti loro bene­ fattori.
14 Others, indeed, had failed to welcome strangers who came to them, but the Egyptians had enslavedtheir own guests and benefactors.	14 E non solo questo, ma c'è da considerare un'al­tra cosa riguardo ai primi: che essi ricevettero di mala voglia i forestieri;
15 The sinners, moreover, will certainly be punished for it, since they gave the foreigners a hostilewelcome;	15 questi invece, dopo averli ricevuti con gioia, quando già vivevan con loro sotto le me­desime leggi, li straziarono coi più atroci tormenti.
16 but the latter, having given a festive reception to people who already shared the same rights asthemselves, later overwhelmed them with terrible labours.	16 E furono puniti coll'accecamento come quelli alla porta del giusto, quan­do, avvolti in subitanee tenebre, ciascuno andava cercando l'in­gresso della sua casa.
17 Hence they were struck with blindness, like the sinners at the gate of the upright, when, yawningdarkness all around them, each had to grope his way through his own door.	17 Pertanto gli elementi cam­biavano tra loro, come nel sal­terio. di cui variano gli accordi, benché ogni corda conservi il pro­prio suono come ci si può persuadere dalla semplice vista.
18 A new attuning of the elements occurred, as on a harp the notes may change their rhythm, though althe while preserving the same tone; and this is just what happened:	18 Infatti gli animali terrestri si cam­biavano in acquatici, e quelli fat­ti per notare passavano sulla ter­ra;
19 land animals became aquatic, swimming ones took to the land,	19 il fuoco nell'acqua sorpassa­va la sua propria forza, e l'acqua si dimenticava della sua virtù naturale di spegnere.
20 fire reinforced its strength in water, and water forgot the power of extinguishing it;	20 Al con­trario, le fiamme non attaccava­no le carni di fragili animali che vi camminavan dentro, nè disfacevan quell'ottimo cibo, che si sarebbe dovuto fondere come il ghiaccio. In tutti i modi tu hai reso grande e glorioso il tuo popolo, o Signore, non lo hai di­sprezzato, e l'hai assistito in ogni tempo e in ogni luogo.
21 flames, on the other hand, did not char the flesh of delicate animals that ventured into them; nor didthey melt the heavenly food resembling ice and as easily melted.
22 Yes, Lord, in every way you have made your people great and glorious; you have never failed to helpthem at any time or place.
