NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 But the godless were assailed by merciless anger to the very end, for he knew beforehand what theywould do,	1 Sugli empi stette sino alla fine una collera priva di misericordia; perché sapeva di loro anche ciò che avrebbero fatto,
2 how, after letting his people leave and hastening their departure, they would change their minds andgive chase.	2 che essi, dopo aver loro permesso di andarsene e di averli spediti in fretta, mutato pensiero, li avrebbero inseguiti.
3 They were actual y stil conducting their mourning rites and lamenting at the tombs of their dead, whenanother mad scheme came into their heads and they set out to pursue, as though runaways, the people whomthey had expel ed and begged to go.	3 Difatti, mentre erano ancora in lutto, e si lamentavano sulle tombe dei morti, li sconvolse un altro folle ragionamento: coloro che supplicando avevano scacciato, proprio quelli inseguirono come fuggitivi.
4 A wel -deserved fate urged them to this extreme and made them forget what had already happened,so that they would add to their torments the one punishment outstanding	4 Li ha trascinati a questo estremo un giusto destino che gettò l'oblio sulle cose che erano accadute, perché colmassero il castigo che ancora mancava ai loro tormenti,
5 and, while your people were experiencing a journey contrary to al expectations, would themselvesmeet an extraordinary death.	5 e mentre il tuo popolo intraprendeva un viaggio straordinario, quelli trovassero una morte inaudita.
6 For the whole creation, submissive to your commands, had its very nature re-created, so that yourchildren should be preserved from harm.	6 Tutta la creazione nel suo genere, si rimodellava di nuovo come prima, servendo ai tuoi ordini, perché i tuoi figli fossero custoditi illesi.
7 Overshadowing the camp there was the cloud; where there had been water, dry land was seen to rise;the Red Sea became an unimpeded way, the tempestuous waves, a green plain;	7 La nube copriva d'ombra l'accampamento, dove prima era l'acqua, apparve la terra asciutta, dal Mar Rosso una via libera e dai flutti impetuosi una pianura verdeggiante.
8 sheltered by your hand, the whole nation passed across, gazing at these amazing prodigies.	8 Per essa passò tutto il popolo, i protetti dalla tua mano, spettatori di meravigliosi prodigi.
9 They were like horses at pasture, they skipped like lambs, singing your praises, Lord, their deliverer.	9 Furono condotti al pascolo come puledri e come agnelli saltarono qua e là lodando te, Signore, loro liberatore.
10 For they stil remembered the events of their exile, how the land had bred mosquitoes instead ofanimals and the River had disgorged mil ions of frogs instead of fish.	10 Ricordavano ancora le cose accadute in esilio, come la terra, invece di diversi generi di animali, produsse mosche, e il fiume, invece di animali acquatici, vomitò una moltitudine di rane.
11 Later they were to see a new way for birds to come into being, when, goaded by greed, theydemanded something tasty,	11 Più tardi videro anche un nuovo genere di uccelli, quando, spinti dal desiderio, chiesero cibi delicati;
12 and quails came up out of the sea to satisfy them.	12 poiché per soddisfarli si presentarono per loro dal mare le quaglie.
13 On the sinners, however, punishments rained down not without violent thunder as early warning; andthey suffered what their own crimes had justly deserved since they had shown such bitter hatred to foreigners.	13 Sui peccatori invece vennero i castighi, non senza essere stati prima provati dalla violenza dei fulmini; essi soffrivano giustamente per la loro propria malvagità: coltivarono infatti l'odio più feroce per il forestiero.
14 Others, indeed, had failed to welcome strangers who came to them, but the Egyptians had enslavedtheir own guests and benefactors.	14 Veramente quelli rifiutarono accoglienza a sconosciuti al loro arrivo, ma questi avevano reso schiavi degli ospiti benèfici.
15 The sinners, moreover, will certainly be punished for it, since they gave the foreigners a hostilewelcome;	15 Non solo, ma se ci sarà qualche clemenza, sarà per quelli che accoglievano ostilmente soltanto gli stranieri.
16 but the latter, having given a festive reception to people who already shared the same rights asthemselves, later overwhelmed them with terrible labours.	16 Ma questi, dopo aver accolto gli Ebrei con festeggiamenti e averli già fatti partecipi dei loro stessi diritti, li maltrattarono condannandoli a duri lavori.
17 Hence they were struck with blindness, like the sinners at the gate of the upright, when, yawningdarkness all around them, each had to grope his way through his own door.	17 Furono colpiti da cecità come quelli alla porta del giusto, quando, avvolti da fitte tenebre, ognuno cercava l'ingresso della propria porta.
18 A new attuning of the elements occurred, as on a harp the notes may change their rhythm, though althe while preserving the same tone; and this is just what happened:	18 Gli elementi si armonizzavano tra di loro, come le note in un'arpa mutano il nome del suono, conservando sempre la tonalità, come si può pienamente comprendere dalla considerazione delle cose accadute:
19 land animals became aquatic, swimming ones took to the land,	19 difatti, animali terrestri si mutavano in acquatici, animali marini passavano sulla terra,
20 fire reinforced its strength in water, and water forgot the power of extinguishing it;	20 il fuoco nell'acqua aumentava la propria potenza e l'acqua dimenticava la sua natura di spegnere;
21 flames, on the other hand, did not char the flesh of delicate animals that ventured into them; nor didthey melt the heavenly food resembling ice and as easily melted.	21 al contrario le fiamme non consumavano le carni di gracili animali che vi passeggiavano dentro, né scioglievano un cibo celeste, simile alla brina, facile a fondersi.
22 Yes, Lord, in every way you have made your people great and glorious; you have never failed to helpthem at any time or place.	22 In tutto, Signore, hai reso grande il tuo popolo e lo hai glorificato e non l'hai trascurato, assistendolo in ogni tempo e in ogni luogo.
