NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 But the godless were assailed by merciless anger to the very end, for he knew beforehand what theywould do,	1 - Ma sugli empi, sino alla fine, s’avventò spietato furore; perchè [Dio] sapeva in anticipo anche il loro futuro,
2 how, after letting his people leave and hastening their departure, they would change their minds andgive chase.	2 come [cioè], dopo d’aver permesso [agli Ebrei] di partire, e averli con gran premura licenziati, lì avrebbero poi, pentitisi, inseguiti.
3 They were actual y stil conducting their mourning rites and lamenting at the tombs of their dead, whenanother mad scheme came into their heads and they set out to pursue, as though runaways, the people whomthey had expel ed and begged to go.	3 Mentre infatti avevano ancor tra mano il lutto e si lamentavano sulle tombe de’ morti, ad altro stolto consiglio s’appigliarono; e quelli che con suppliche avevan mandati via, quegli stessi come fuggiaschi [ora] inseguivano.
4 A wel -deserved fate urged them to this extreme and made them forget what had already happened,so that they would add to their torments the one punishment outstanding	4 Li spingeva a tal estremo il meritato fato, che ad essi di quant’era avvenuto fece perder la memoria; affinchè la punizione compisse quanto mancava ai [loro] tormenti:
5 and, while your people were experiencing a journey contrary to al expectations, would themselvesmeet an extraordinary death.	5 e mentre il tuo popolo farebbe un miracoloso passaggio, quelli incontrassero una morte strana.
6 For the whole creation, submissive to your commands, had its very nature re-created, so that yourchildren should be preserved from harm.	6 Tutta la creazione invero era daccapo riformata nella sua natura, servendo ai tuoi ordini, perchè illesi fossero conservati i tuoi figliuoli.
7 Overshadowing the camp there was the cloud; where there had been water, dry land was seen to rise;the Red Sea became an unimpeded way, the tempestuous waves, a green plain;	7 Così la nuvola faceva ombra al loro accampamento, e dove prima era l’acqua apparve la terra asciutta, e una via senza intoppi [s’aprì] per mezzo al mar Rosso, e un verdeggiante prato [sorse] su dalla immensa profondità.
8 sheltered by your hand, the whole nation passed across, gazing at these amazing prodigies.	8 per cui tutto il popolo passò, protetto dalla tua mano, spettatori di meraviglie e di portenti.
9 They were like horses at pasture, they skipped like lambs, singing your praises, Lord, their deliverer.	9 Come cavalli essi pascolarono, e come agnelli saltellarono, celebrando te, o Signore, loro liberatore.
10 For they stil remembered the events of their exile, how the land had bred mosquitoes instead ofanimals and the River had disgorged mil ions of frogs instead of fish.	10 Chè si ricordavano ancor le cose accadute nel loro esìlio, come, invece della generazione d’[altri] animali, la terra produsse zanzare, e in luogo dì pesci 11 fiume diè fuori una moltitudine di ranocchi.
11 Later they were to see a new way for birds to come into being, when, goaded by greed, theydemanded something tasty,	11 Più tardi videro anche una nuova progenie d’uccelli, quando spinti da bramosia domandarono cibi squisiti:
12 and quails came up out of the sea to satisfy them.	12 a soddisfare invero il loro desiderio si levaron per essi dal mare le quaglie. E i castighi piombarono sui peccatori, non senza precedenti indizi per mezzo della violenza de’ fulmini. E giustamente soffriron per le loro malvagità,
13 On the sinners, however, punishments rained down not without violent thunder as early warning; andthey suffered what their own crimes had justly deserved since they had shown such bitter hatred to foreigners.	13 chè più detestabile inospitalità avevan dimostrato [che non i Sodomiti]. Quelli invero non vollero ricevere sconosciuti forestieri: ma questi fecero schiavi ospiti benemeriti.
14 Others, indeed, had failed to welcome strangers who came to them, but the Egyptians had enslavedtheir own guests and benefactors.	14 E non solo, ma un’altra considerazione c’era [in favore] di quelli, che [cioè] ricevevan di mala voglia gli stranieri;
15 The sinners, moreover, will certainly be punished for it, since they gave the foreigners a hostilewelcome;	15 gli altri invece, dopo averli accolti con festa, messili già a parte degli stessi diritti, li maltrattarono con crudeli strapazzi.
16 but the latter, having given a festive reception to people who already shared the same rights asthemselves, later overwhelmed them with terrible labours.	16 Pertanto furon colpiti di cecità, come [già] quelli alla porta del giusto; avvolti da improvvise [e profonde] tenebre, ognuno cercava l'ingresso della sua porta.
17 Hence they were struck with blindness, like the sinners at the gate of the upright, when, yawningdarkness all around them, each had to grope his way through his own door.	17 Gli elementi invero si scambiavano tra loro, come in un’arpa si muta la modulazione, [pur] conservando tutte [le corde] il loro suono: e ciò ben può giudicarsi alla vista [di ciò che allora avvenne].
18 A new attuning of the elements occurred, as on a harp the notes may change their rhythm, though althe while preserving the same tone; and this is just what happened:	18 Perchè gli [animali] terrestri si trasformavano in acquatici, e quelli fatti per il nuoto passavan sulla terra;
19 land animals became aquatic, swimming ones took to the land,	19 il fuoco ingagliardiva nell'acqua oltre la propria forza, e l'acqua dimenticava la sua virtù di spengere;
20 fire reinforced its strength in water, and water forgot the power of extinguishing it;	20 viceversa, le fiamme non divoraron le carni delle fragili bestiole che [dentro] vi camminavano, nè struggevano il buon alimento [celeste], facile a struggere, simile a ghiaccio. In ogni cosa, o Signore, tu magnificasti il tuo popolo e lo glorificasti, nè lo sprezzasti [mai], assistendolo in ogni tempo e in ogni luogo.
21 flames, on the other hand, did not char the flesh of delicate animals that ventured into them; nor didthey melt the heavenly food resembling ice and as easily melted.
22 Yes, Lord, in every way you have made your people great and glorious; you have never failed to helpthem at any time or place.
