NEW JERUSALEM	Biblia Matos Soares
1 Thus they were appropriately punished by similar creatures and tormented by swarms of vermin.	1 Por isso foram justamente castigados por seres (vis) semelhantes (aos que adoravam) foram atormentados por uma multidão de animais.
2 In contrast to this punishment, you did your people a kindness and, to satisfy their sharp appetite,provided quails -- a luscious rarity -- for them to eat.	2 Em lugar de tais penas, fizeste favores ao teu povo, satisfazendo o ardor do seu apetite, com um alimento maravilhoso, e dando-lhe por alimento codornizes.
3 Thus the Egyptians, at the repulsive sight of the creatures sent against them, were to find that, thoughthey longed for food, they had lost their natural appetite; whereas your own people, after a short privation, wereto have a rare relish for their portion.	3 Desta sorte, estando, muito embora, aqueles com vontade de comer, por causa do aspecto repugnante dos insectos enviados contra eles, viram transformar-se em aversão o apetite do necessário, enquanto que estes, postos em necessidade por pouco tempo, saborearam depois um maravilhoso manjar.
4 Inevitable that relentless want should seize on the former oppressors; enough for your people to beshown how their enemies were being tortured.	4 Importava que sobreviesse uma ruína inevitável aos opressores, e que aos outros somente se mostrasse de que modo eram atormentados os seus inimigos.
5 Even when the fearful rage of wild animals overtook them and they were perishing from the bites ofwrithing snakes, your retribution did not continue to the end.	5 Com efeito, quando velo sobre eles o furor dos animais cruéis, e eram mortos pelas mordeduras de serpentes tortuosas,
6 Affliction struck them briefly, by way of warning, and they had a saving token to remind them of thecommandment of your Law,	6 a tua ira não durou até ao fim; eles só por pouco tempo foram perturbados para isso lhes servir de advertência; tiveram um sinal de salvação para os fazer lembrar dos mandamentos da tua lei.
7 for whoever turned to it was saved, not by what he looked at, but by you, the Saviour of all.	7 Aquele que se voltava para o referido sinal, não era curado pelo que via, mas sim por ti, que és o Salvador de todos os homens.
8 And by such means you proved to our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil;	8 Com isto mostraste aos nossos inimigos, que és tu o que livras de todo o mal.
9 for them, the bites of locusts and flies proved fatal and no remedy could be found to save their lives,since they deserved to be punished by such creatures.	9 Efectivamente aqueles foram mortos pelas mordeduras dos gafanhotos e das moscas, e não se encontrou remédio para lhes salvar a vida porque eram dignos de ser assim exterminados.
10 But your children, not even the fangs of poisonous snakes could bring them down; for your mercycame to their help and cured them.	10 Porém, quanto aos teus filhos, nem os dentes dos dragões venenosos os puderam vencer, porque, sobrevindo a tua misericórdia, os curou.
11 One sting -- how quickly healed!-to remind them of your pronouncements rather than that, by sinkinginto deep forgetfulness, they should be cut off from your kindness.	11 Pois (somente) eram feridos a fim de que se lembrassem dos teus preceitos, e logo ficavam salvos, para que não sucedesse que completamente os esquecessem e ficassem excluídos dos teus benefícios.
12 No herb, no poultice cured them, but your al -healing word, Lord.	12 Não foi erva que os sarou, nem remédio algum, mas sim a tua palavra, Senhor, que sara todas as coisas.
13 Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again.	13 Tu, Senhor, és o que tens o poder da vida e da morte, e o que nos levas às portas da morte, e o que de lá nos tiras.
14 A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free thesoul that Hades has once received.	14 Um homem pode bem matar outro por malícia; porém, tendo saído o espírito, não o poderá fazer voltar, nem fará tornar a alma que já foi recebida (na habitação dos mortos).
15 It is not possible to escape your hand.	15 À tua mão é impossível escapar.
16 The godless who refused to acknowledge you were scourged by the strength of your arm, pursued byno ordinary rains, hail and unrelenting downpours, and consumed by fire.	16 Por isso os ímpios que negavam conhecer-te, pela fortaleza do teu braço foram açoitados, sendo atormentados por chuvas extraordinárias, saraivas, implacáveis tempestades, e consumidos pelo fogo.
17 Even more wonderful, in the water -- which quenches al -- the fire raged fiercer than ever; for theelements fight for the upright.	17 E o que nisto havia de mais admirável era que, na água que tudo extingue, o fogo se ateava ainda mais, porque o universo combate pelos justos,
18 At one moment, the fire would die down, to avoid consuming the animals sent against the godlessand to make clear to them by that sight, that the sentence of God was pursuing them;	18 Umas vezes amansava-se o fogo, para não queimar os animais, que tinham sido enviados contra os ímpios, e isto para que, vendo eles uma tal maravilha, reconhecessem que um juízo de Deus os perseguia.
19 at another, in the very heart of the water, it would burn more fiercely than fire to ruin the produce of awicked land.	19 Outras vezes o fogo, contra a sua virtude natural, ardia na água, para consumir as produções duma terra iníqua.
20 How differently with your people! You gave them the food of angels, from heaven untiringly providingthem bread already prepared, containing every delight, to satisfy every taste.	20 Em contraposição de tudo isto alimentaste o teu povo com alimento dos anjos, deste-lhe, sem trabalho, pão vindo do céu completamente preparado, que tinha em si toda a delícia e se acomodava a todos os gostos.
21 And the substance you gave showed your sweetness towards your children, for, conforming to thetaste of whoever ate it, it transformed itself into what each eater wished.	21 Este alimento mostrava a doçura que tens para com teus filhos, pois, acomodando-se às vontade de cada um, transformava-se no que cada um queria.
22 Snow and ice endured the fire, without melting; this was to show them that, to destroy the harvests oftheir enemies, fire would burn even in hail and flare in fal ing rain,	22 A neve e o gelo aturavam a violência do fogo sem se fundirem, para que soubessem que destruía os frutos dos inimigos um fogo que ardia no meio da saraiva, que cintilava por entre a chuva.
23 whereas, on the other hand, it would even forget its own strength in the service of feeding the upright.	23 fogo que, a seguir, esquecia a sua própria força, quando se tratava dos sustento dos justos.
24 For the creation, being at the service of you, its Creator, tautens to punish the wicked and slackensfor the benefit of those who trust in you.	24 A criatura, servindo-te a ti seu Criador, desenvolve a sua energia para atormentar os injustos, e abranda-a para fazer bem aqueles que em ti confiam.
25 And this is why, by changing into al things, it obediently served your all-nourishing bounty,conforming to the wishes of those who were in need;	25 Por isto ela, transformando-se em toda a sorte de gostos obedecia à tua generosidade que tudo sustenta, acomodando-se ao desejo dos necessitados,
26 so that your beloved children, Lord, might learn that the various crops are not what providenourishment, but your word which preserves al who believe in you.	26 a fim de que soubessem os teus filhos, a quem amaste, Senhor, que não são os frutos naturais que sustentam os homens, mas que é a tua palavra que conserva aqueles que crêem em ti.
27 For that which fire could not destroy melted in the heat of a single fleeting sunbeam,	27 O que pelo fogo não podia ser devorado, ao ser aquecido por um escasso raio do sol, imediatamente se desfazia.
28 to show that, to give you thanks, we must rise before the sun and meet you at the dawning of theday;	28 para ensinar a todos que é preciso antecipar-se ao nascer do sol para te dar graça, e adorar-te desde o raiar da manhã.
29 whereas the hope of the ungrateful melts like winter frost and flows away like water running to waste.	29 A esperança do ingrato fundirá como o gelo do inverno, e se perderá como água inútil.
