NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Thus they were appropriately punished by similar creatures and tormented by swarms of vermin.	1 Por eso, con toda justicia fueron castigados con seres semejantes y atormentados con una infinidad de bichos.
2 In contrast to this punishment, you did your people a kindness and, to satisfy their sharp appetite,provided quails -- a luscious rarity -- for them to eat.	2 En lugar de ese castigo, fuiste benévolo con tu pueblo, y para satisfacer su voraz apetito, le preparaste como alimento un manjar exquisito: ¡las codornices!
3 Thus the Egyptians, at the repulsive sight of the creatures sent against them, were to find that, thoughthey longed for food, they had lost their natural appetite; whereas your own people, after a short privation, wereto have a rare relish for their portion.	3 Así los egipcios, a pesar de su deseo de comer, perdieron el apetito natural, ante el aspecto repugnante de los animales enviados contra ellos; tu pueblo, en cambio, sometido a privación por poco tiempo, participó de un manjar exquisito.
4 Inevitable that relentless want should seize on the former oppressors; enough for your people to beshown how their enemies were being tortured.	4 Porque era necesario que a aquellos opresores les sobreviniera una penuria inevitable y que a estos sólo se les hiciera ver cómo eran atormentados sus enemigos.
5 Even when the fearful rage of wild animals overtook them and they were perishing from the bites ofwrithing snakes, your retribution did not continue to the end.	5 Incluso cuando se desencadenó sobre tu pueblo el furor terrible de animales feroces, y ellos perecían por la mordedura de serpientes huidizas, tu ira no duró hasta el extremo.
6 Affliction struck them briefly, by way of warning, and they had a saving token to remind them of thecommandment of your Law,	6 A manera de advertencia, fueron atribulados por poco tiempo, teniendo ya una prenda de salvación para que recordaran el mandamiento de tu Ley;
7 for whoever turned to it was saved, not by what he looked at, but by you, the Saviour of all.	7 en efecto, aquel que se volvía hacia ella era salvado, no por lo que contemplaba, sino por ti, el Salvador de todos.
8 And by such means you proved to our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil;	8 Así demostraste a nuestros enemigos que eres tú el que libra de todo mal:
9 for them, the bites of locusts and flies proved fatal and no remedy could be found to save their lives,since they deserved to be punished by such creatures.	9 ellos murieron por la picadura de langostas y moscas, y no se podía encontrar un remedio para sus vidas, porque merecían ser castigados por esos animales.
10 But your children, not even the fangs of poisonous snakes could bring them down; for your mercycame to their help and cured them.	10 Pero contra tus hijos, ni siquiera pudieron los dientes de las serpientes venenosas, porque tu misericordia vino a su encuentro y los sanó.
11 One sting -- how quickly healed!-to remind them of your pronouncements rather than that, by sinkinginto deep forgetfulness, they should be cut off from your kindness.	11 Para que se acordaran de tus palabras, eran aguijoneados y se curaban rápidamente, no sea que cayeran en un profundo olvido y así quedaran excluidos de tu acción bienhechora.
12 No herb, no poultice cured them, but your al -healing word, Lord.	12 Y no los sanaron las hierbas ni los ungüentos sino tu palabra, Señor, que todo lo cura.
13 Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again.	13 Porque tú tienes poder sobre la vida y la muerte, haces bajar a las puertas del Abismo y haces subir de allí.
14 A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free thesoul that Hades has once received.	14 El hombre, en su malicia, puede matar, pero no hace volver el espíritu una vez que se fue, ni libera al alma recibida por el Abismo.
15 It is not possible to escape your hand.	15 Es imposible escapar de tu mano.
16 The godless who refused to acknowledge you were scourged by the strength of your arm, pursued byno ordinary rains, hail and unrelenting downpours, and consumed by fire.	16 Los impíos que rehusaban conocerte fueron golpeados por la fuerza de tu brazo: los acosaron lluvias insólitas, granizadas, aguaceros implacables, y el fuego los consumió.
17 Even more wonderful, in the water -- which quenches al -- the fire raged fiercer than ever; for theelements fight for the upright.	17 Pero lo más extraño era que en el agua, que todo lo apaga, el fuego se encendía más, porque el universo combate en defensa de los justos.
18 At one moment, the fire would die down, to avoid consuming the animals sent against the godlessand to make clear to them by that sight, that the sentence of God was pursuing them;	18 Unas veces, las llamas se apaciguaban para no abrasar a los animales enviados contra los impíos, y para que, al verlas, estos se sintieran perseguidos por un juicio de Dios.
19 at another, in the very heart of the water, it would burn more fiercely than fire to ruin the produce of awicked land.	19 Otras veces, dentro mismo del agua, las llamas ardían con una fuerza superior a la del fuego, para destruir las cosechas de una tierra injusta.
20 How differently with your people! You gave them the food of angels, from heaven untiringly providingthem bread already prepared, containing every delight, to satisfy every taste.	20 En lugar de esto, nutriste a tu pueblo con un alimento de ángeles, y sin que ellos se fatigaran, les enviaste desde el cielo un pan ya preparado, capaz de brindar todas las delicias y adaptado a todos los gustos.
21 And the substance you gave showed your sweetness towards your children, for, conforming to thetaste of whoever ate it, it transformed itself into what each eater wished.	21 Y el sustento que les dabas manifestaba tu dulzura hacia tus hijos, porque, adaptándose al gusto del que lo comía, se transformaba según el deseo de cada uno.
22 Snow and ice endured the fire, without melting; this was to show them that, to destroy the harvests oftheir enemies, fire would burn even in hail and flare in fal ing rain,	22 La nieve y el hielo resistían al fuego sin derretirse, a fin de que supieran que solamente los frutos de los enemigos eran destruidos por el fuego que ardía en medio del granizo y fulguraba bajo la lluvia;
23 whereas, on the other hand, it would even forget its own strength in the service of feeding the upright.	23 mientras que, por el contrario, ese mismo fuego olvidaba hasta su propio poder, para respetar el alimento de los justo.
24 For the creation, being at the service of you, its Creator, tautens to punish the wicked and slackensfor the benefit of those who trust in you.	24 Porque la creación, que está al servicio de ti, su Creador, se pone en tensión para castigar a los injustos y se distiende para beneficiar a los que confían en ti.
25 And this is why, by changing into al things, it obediently served your all-nourishing bounty,conforming to the wishes of those who were in need;	25 Por eso también entonces, transformándose completamente, ella estaba al servicio de tu generosidad, que a todos alimenta, de acuerdo con el deseo de los que te suplicaban.
26 so that your beloved children, Lord, might learn that the various crops are not what providenourishment, but your word which preserves al who believe in you.	26 Así los hijos que tú has amado, Señor, debían aprender que no son las diversas clases de frutos los que alimentan al hombre, sino que es tu palabra la que sostiene a los que creen en ti.
27 For that which fire could not destroy melted in the heat of a single fleeting sunbeam,	27 Porque lo que el fuego no lograba destruir se derretía al simple calor de un tenue rayo de sol,
28 to show that, to give you thanks, we must rise before the sun and meet you at the dawning of theday;	28 para que se pusiera bien de manifiesto que hay que anticiparse al sol para darte gracias y encontrarse contigo al despuntar el día.
29 whereas the hope of the ungrateful melts like winter frost and flows away like water running to waste.	29 Pero la esperanza del ingrato se diluirá como la escarcha invernal y correrá como agua inservible.
