NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Thus they were appropriately punished by similar creatures and tormented by swarms of vermin.	1 Per questo furono giustamente castigati con le medesime cose e furono tormentati con una moltitudine di bestie.
2 In contrast to this punishment, you did your people a kindness and, to satisfy their sharp appetite,provided quails -- a luscious rarity -- for them to eat.	2 Invece di questo castigo, beneficasti il tuo popolo; per soddisfarne l'ardente desiderio, preparasti un cibo di gusto meraviglioso, le quaglie,
3 Thus the Egyptians, at the repulsive sight of the creatures sent against them, were to find that, thoughthey longed for food, they had lost their natural appetite; whereas your own people, after a short privation, wereto have a rare relish for their portion.	3 perché quelli che desideravano il cibo, per il disgusto delle bestie inviate loro contro, perdessero anche l'appetito naturale, mentre questi, divenuti bisognosi per breve tempo, gustassero un cibo meraviglioso.
4 Inevitable that relentless want should seize on the former oppressors; enough for your people to beshown how their enemies were being tortured.	4 Veramente era necessario che su quei tiranni sopravvenisse una inevitabile indigenza, ma a questi solo che si mostrasse come erano tormentati i loro nemici.
5 Even when the fearful rage of wild animals overtook them and they were perishing from the bites ofwrithing snakes, your retribution did not continue to the end.	5 Quando infatti sopravvenne su di loro la furia terribile delle belve ed erano sterminati dai morsi di velenosi serpenti, la tua ira non durò sino alla fine.
6 Affliction struck them briefly, by way of warning, and they had a saving token to remind them of thecommandment of your Law,	6 A scopo di ammonizione e per breve tempo furono tormentati, avendo avuto un segno di salvezza, perché conservassero il ricordo del precetto della tua legge.
7 for whoever turned to it was saved, not by what he looked at, but by you, the Saviour of all.	7 Infatti chi vi si volgeva, non era salvato da ciò che guardava, ma da te, salvatore di tutti.
8 And by such means you proved to our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil;	8 Anche con questo persuadesti i nostri nemici che sei tu colui che libera da ogni male.
9 for them, the bites of locusts and flies proved fatal and no remedy could be found to save their lives,since they deserved to be punished by such creatures.	9 Veramente li uccisero i morsi di cavallette e di mosche, né si trovò un rimedio per la loro vita, perché meritavano di essere castigati da tali bestie;
10 But your children, not even the fangs of poisonous snakes could bring them down; for your mercycame to their help and cured them.	10 ma i denti di serpenti velenosi non vinsero i tuoi figli, poiché intervenne la tua misericordia e li guarì.
11 One sting -- how quickly healed!-to remind them of your pronouncements rather than that, by sinkinginto deep forgetfulness, they should be cut off from your kindness.	11 Perché conservassero il ricordo delle tue parole, erano puniti e subito salvati, per timore che, caduti in un profondo oblio, fossero esclusi dai tuoi benefici.
12 No herb, no poultice cured them, but your al -healing word, Lord.	12 Non li guarì né erba né unguento, ma la tua parola, Signore, che tutto sana.
13 Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again.	13 Tu infatti hai potere sulla vita e sulla morte, conduci alle porte degl'inferi e riconduci indietro.
14 A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free thesoul that Hades has once received.	14 L'uomo nella sua malvagità può uccidere, ma non può richiamare lo spirito che è uscito, né liberare un'anima che è stata rinchiusa.
15 It is not possible to escape your hand.	15 E' impossibile sfuggire alla tua mano.
16 The godless who refused to acknowledge you were scourged by the strength of your arm, pursued byno ordinary rains, hail and unrelenting downpours, and consumed by fire.	16 Gli empi, che rifiutavano di conoscerti, furono puniti con la forza del tuo braccio, perseguitati da insolite piogge, da grandine e da uragani spaventosi e consumati dal fuoco.
17 Even more wonderful, in the water -- which quenches al -- the fire raged fiercer than ever; for theelements fight for the upright.	17 E, cosa mirabile, nell'acqua che tutto spegne, il fuoco prendeva maggior vigore, poiché difensore dei giusti è l'universo.
18 At one moment, the fire would die down, to avoid consuming the animals sent against the godlessand to make clear to them by that sight, that the sentence of God was pursuing them;	18 Talvolta veramente la fiamma si mitigava per non consumare gli animali inviati contro gli empi, ma perché essi, a tal vista, comprendessero che erano incalzati dal giudizio di Dio;
19 at another, in the very heart of the water, it would burn more fiercely than fire to ruin the produce of awicked land.	19 altre volte anche in mezzo all'acqua la fiamma bruciava oltre la potenza del fuoco, per distruggere i prodotti di una terra iniqua.
20 How differently with your people! You gave them the food of angels, from heaven untiringly providingthem bread already prepared, containing every delight, to satisfy every taste.	20 Al contrario nutristi il tuo popolo con il cibo degli angeli e preparasti per loro dal cielo un pane già pronto, senza fatica, capace di procurare ogni delizia e di soddisfare ogni gusto.
21 And the substance you gave showed your sweetness towards your children, for, conforming to thetaste of whoever ate it, it transformed itself into what each eater wished.	21 Veramente quel tuo sostentamento manifestava la tua dolcezza per i figli, adattandosi al desiderio di chi ne mangiava, si mutava in ciò che uno voleva.
22 Snow and ice endured the fire, without melting; this was to show them that, to destroy the harvests oftheir enemies, fire would burn even in hail and flare in fal ing rain,	22 Neve e ghiaccio resistevano al fuoco e non si consumavano, perché conoscessero che il fuoco, divampante tra la grandine e sfolgorante tra la pioggia, distruggeva i frutti dei nemici.
23 whereas, on the other hand, it would even forget its own strength in the service of feeding the upright.	23 Ma questo, al contrario, per nutrire i giusti, dimenticava anche la propria potenza.
24 For the creation, being at the service of you, its Creator, tautens to punish the wicked and slackensfor the benefit of those who trust in you.	24 La creazione, infatti, servendo a te che l'hai fatta, si eccita in punizione contro gli ingiusti e si distende a beneficio di quanti confidano in te.
25 And this is why, by changing into al things, it obediently served your all-nourishing bounty,conforming to the wishes of those who were in need;	25 Per questo anche allora, piegandosi a tutto, serviva al tuo dono che tutto nutre, secondo il desiderio di quanti erano nel bisogno,
26 so that your beloved children, Lord, might learn that the various crops are not what providenourishment, but your word which preserves al who believe in you.	26 perché i tuoi figli, che ami, Signore, imparassero che non i diversi frutti fanno vivere l'uomo, ma la tua parola conserva in vita quanti credono in te.
27 For that which fire could not destroy melted in the heat of a single fleeting sunbeam,	27 Infatti, ciò che non era stato distrutto dal fuoco, subito si scioglieva, riscaldato da un semplice raggio di sole
28 to show that, to give you thanks, we must rise before the sun and meet you at the dawning of theday;	28 perché fosse noto che è necessario prevenire il sole per renderti grazie e incontrarti al sorgere della luce,
29 whereas the hope of the ungrateful melts like winter frost and flows away like water running to waste.	29 poiché la speranza dell'ingrato si scioglierà come brina invernale e scorrerà via come acqua inutile.
