NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Thus they were appropriately punished by similar creatures and tormented by swarms of vermin.	1 Perciò a buon diritto gli empi furon castigati con esseri siffatti e tormentati da una torma di bestie.
2 In contrast to this punishment, you did your people a kindness and, to satisfy their sharp appetite,provided quails -- a luscious rarity -- for them to eat.	2 In luogo di tali pene, tu beneficasti il tuo popolo, cui desti la delizia da esso bramata, uno straordinario sapore, preparando loro un cibo di quaglie.
3 Thus the Egyptians, at the repulsive sight of the creatures sent against them, were to find that, thoughthey longed for food, they had lost their natural appetite; whereas your own people, after a short privation, wereto have a rare relish for their portion.	3 Onde quelli, pur bramosi di cibo, alla vista [stomachevole] degli [animali] mandati loro, perfino l'appetito necessario perdevano; questi invece, sofferta penuria per un poco, ebber [poi] uno straordinario alimento.
4 Inevitable that relentless want should seize on the former oppressors; enough for your people to beshown how their enemies were being tortured.	4 Bisognava invero che a quelli che usavan tirannia sopravvenisse una rovina senza riparo; ma a questi fosse soltanto mostrato in qual maniera eran tormentati i loro nemici.
5 Even when the fearful rage of wild animals overtook them and they were perishing from the bites ofwrithing snakes, your retribution did not continue to the end.	5 Cosi anche quando gli assalì feroce rabbia di belve, [e] perivan per i morsi di tortuosi serpenti,
6 Affliction struck them briefly, by way of warning, and they had a saving token to remind them of thecommandment of your Law,	6 non si mantenne sino all’ultimo l'ira tua; ma a [loro] ammonimento furon per breve tempo spaventati ricevendo [presto] un segno di salvezza, a ricordo del precetto della tua legge.
7 for whoever turned to it was saved, not by what he looked at, but by you, the Saviour of all.	7 Chi invero si volgeva, non per il [segno] veduto era salvo, ma per opera tua, che sei il salvatore di tutti!
8 And by such means you proved to our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil;	8 E con ciò dimostrasti ai nostri nemici, che se, tu che liberi da ogni male.
9 for them, the bites of locusts and flies proved fatal and no remedy could be found to save their lives,since they deserved to be punished by such creatures.	9 Quelli infatti perirono per i morsi delle locuste e delle mosche, nè si trovò rimedio per la loro vita, poiché eran degni d’esser [puniti e] sterminati da [bestie] siffatte;
10 But your children, not even the fangs of poisonous snakes could bring them down; for your mercycame to their help and cured them.	10 ma i tuoi figliuoli non li vinsero neppure i denti di velenosi draghi, perchè la tua misericordia si fe' loro incontro e li sanò.
11 One sting -- how quickly healed!-to remind them of your pronouncements rather than that, by sinkinginto deep forgetfulness, they should be cut off from your kindness.	11 Per [richiamarli] alla memoria de' tuoi oracoli erano invero straziati e prontamente poi risanati; per tema che caduti in oblio profondo [di quegli oracoli] non potessero più usufruire del tuo soccorso.
12 No herb, no poultice cured them, but your al -healing word, Lord.	12 Non erba nè emolliente li guarì, ma la tua parolaio Signore, che tutto sana.
13 Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again.	13 Giacché se, tu che hai potere sulla vita e sulla morte, e conduci alle porte degli inferi, e riconduci indietro.
14 A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free thesoul that Hades has once received.	14 L'uomo può ben uccidere con la sua malvagità, non però far tornar indietro lo spirito, partito che sia, nè richiamar l’anima accolta [nel regno del morti].
15 It is not possible to escape your hand.	15 Ma sfuggire alla tua mano è impossibile!
16 The godless who refused to acknowledge you were scourged by the strength of your arm, pursued byno ordinary rains, hail and unrelenting downpours, and consumed by fire.	16 Gli empi che dicevano di non conoscerti, furon flagellati dalla forza del tuo braccio, perseguitati da piogge nuove e grandini e acquazzoni [inesorabili] o condannati dal fuoco.
17 Even more wonderful, in the water -- which quenches al -- the fire raged fiercer than ever; for theelements fight for the upright.	17 E ciò ch'era [il più] maraviglioso, nell'acqua che tutto spegne maggiormente ingagliardiva il fuoco, perchè l’universo combatte per i giusti.
18 At one moment, the fire would die down, to avoid consuming the animals sent against the godlessand to make clear to them by that sight, that the sentence of God was pursuing them;	18 Talora s'ammansiva la fiamma per non incenerir le bestie mandate contro gli empi, perchè questi a tal vista s'accorgessero che da divino giudizio erano incalzati.
19 at another, in the very heart of the water, it would burn more fiercely than fire to ruin the produce of awicked land.	19 Talora, [anche] in mezzo all’acqua, essa ardeva d’ogni parte oltre la potenza del fuoco, per distruggere il prodotto dell’iniqua terra.
20 How differently with your people! You gave them the food of angels, from heaven untiringly providingthem bread already prepared, containing every delight, to satisfy every taste.	20 Invece, tu nutristi il tuo popolo col cibo degli angeli, e un pane bell’e pronto mandasti loro dal cielo, senza [lor] fatica, il quale aveva in sè ogni delizia e ogni soavità di sapore.
21 And the substance you gave showed your sweetness towards your children, for, conforming to thetaste of whoever ate it, it transformed itself into what each eater wished.	21 Che quella sostanza mostrava la dolcezza che hai per i figliuoli, e assecondando il desiderio di chiunque [la portava alla bocca], si mutava in ciò che ognuno voleva.
22 Snow and ice endured the fire, without melting; this was to show them that, to destroy the harvests oftheir enemies, fire would burn even in hail and flare in fal ing rain,	22 La neve e il ghiaccio reggevano al fuoco e non si struggevano, affinché [i tuoi figliuoli] conoscessero come il fuoco distruggeva i frutti de’ nemici, ardendo nella grandine e scintillando nella pioggia,
23 whereas, on the other hand, it would even forget its own strength in the service of feeding the upright.	23 ma lo stesso ora, perchè si nutrissero i giusti, dimenticava persino la sua propria virtù.
24 For the creation, being at the service of you, its Creator, tautens to punish the wicked and slackensfor the benefit of those who trust in you.	24 La creazione, infatti, sottoposta a te suo fattore, s'esaspera a castigo contro gl’ingiusti e si mitiga a beneficenza verso coloro che in te confidano.
25 And this is why, by changing into al things, it obediently served your all-nourishing bounty,conforming to the wishes of those who were in need;	25 Perciò anche allora, trasformandosi in ogni guisa, serviva alla tua bontà, nutrice universale, secondo la volontà di chi era in bisogno.
26 so that your beloved children, Lord, might learn that the various crops are not what providenourishment, but your word which preserves al who believe in you.	26 Affinchè imparassero i tuoi figliuoli, i quali tu hai amato, o Signore, come non i frutti nauseanti nutriscono l’uomo, ma la tua parola conserva quel che credono in te.
27 For that which fire could not destroy melted in the heat of a single fleeting sunbeam,	27 Ciò invero che non poteva esser consumato dal fuoco, si squagliava non appena riscaldato da lieve raggio di sole; perchè fosse noto a tutti che bisogna prevenire il sole per renderti grazie, e al sorger della luce adorarti.
28 to show that, to give you thanks, we must rise before the sun and meet you at the dawning of theday;	28 La speranza infatti dell'ingrato si scioglierà come ghiaccio invernale e scorrerà via come acqua inutile!
29 whereas the hope of the ungrateful melts like winter frost and flows away like water running to waste.
