1 Thus they were appropriately punished by similar creatures and tormented by swarms of vermin.	1 Per questo furono giustamente puniti con esseri simili e torturati con una moltitudine di bestie.
2 In contrast to this punishment, you did your people a kindness and, to satisfy their sharp appetite,provided quails -- a luscious rarity -- for them to eat.	2 Invece di tale castigo, tu beneficasti il tuo popolo; per appagarne il forte appetito gli preparasti come cibo quaglie dal gusto insolito,
3 Thus the Egyptians, at the repulsive sight of the creatures sent against them, were to find that, thoughthey longed for food, they had lost their natural appetite; whereas your own people, after a short privation, wereto have a rare relish for their portion.	3 perché quelli che desideravano cibo, a causa del ribrezzo per gli animali inviati contro di loro, perdessero anche l’istinto della fame, mentre questi, rimasti privi di cibo per un breve periodo, provassero un gusto insolito.
4 Inevitable that relentless want should seize on the former oppressors; enough for your people to beshown how their enemies were being tortured.	4 Era necessario che su quei tiranni si abbattesse una carestia implacabile e a questi si mostrasse soltanto come erano tormentati i loro nemici.
5 Even when the fearful rage of wild animals overtook them and they were perishing from the bites ofwrithing snakes, your retribution did not continue to the end.	5 Quando infatti li assalì il terribile furore delle bestie e venivano distrutti per i morsi di serpenti sinuosi, la tua collera non durò sino alla fine.
6 Affliction struck them briefly, by way of warning, and they had a saving token to remind them of thecommandment of your Law,	6 Per correzione furono turbati per breve tempo, ed ebbero un segno di salvezza a ricordo del precetto della tua legge.
7 for whoever turned to it was saved, not by what he looked at, but by you, the Saviour of all.	7 Infatti chi si volgeva a guardarlo era salvato non per mezzo dell’oggetto che vedeva, ma da te, salvatore di tutti.
8 And by such means you proved to our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil;	8 Anche in tal modo hai persuaso i nostri nemici che sei tu colui che libera da ogni male.
9 for them, the bites of locusts and flies proved fatal and no remedy could be found to save their lives,since they deserved to be punished by such creatures.	9 Essi infatti furono uccisi dai morsi di cavallette e mosconi, né si trovò un rimedio per la loro vita, meritando di essere puniti con tali mezzi.
10 But your children, not even the fangs of poisonous snakes could bring them down; for your mercycame to their help and cured them.	10 Invece contro i tuoi figli neppure i denti di serpenti velenosi prevalsero, perché la tua misericordia venne loro incontro e li guarì.
11 One sting -- how quickly healed!-to remind them of your pronouncements rather than that, by sinkinginto deep forgetfulness, they should be cut off from your kindness.	11 Perché ricordassero le tue parole, venivano feriti ed erano subito guariti, per timore che, caduti in un profondo oblio, fossero esclusi dai tuoi benefici.
12 No herb, no poultice cured them, but your al -healing word, Lord.	12 Non li guarì né un’erba né un unguento, ma la tua parola, o Signore, che tutto risana.
13 Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again.	13 Tu infatti hai potere sulla vita e sulla morte, conduci alle porte del regno dei morti e fai risalire.
14 A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free thesoul that Hades has once received.	14 L’uomo uccide con la sua malvagità, ma non può far ritornare uno spirito che se n’è andato, né libera un’anima già accolta nel regno dei morti.
15 It is not possible to escape your hand.	15 È impossibile sfuggire alla tua mano:
16 The godless who refused to acknowledge you were scourged by the strength of your arm, pursued byno ordinary rains, hail and unrelenting downpours, and consumed by fire.	16 perciò gli empi, che rifiutavano di conoscerti, furono fustigati dalla forza del tuo braccio, perseguitati da piogge strane, da grandine, da acquazzoni travolgenti, e consumati dal fuoco.
17 Even more wonderful, in the water -- which quenches al -- the fire raged fiercer than ever; for theelements fight for the upright.	17 E, cosa più sorprendente, nell’acqua che tutto spegne il fuoco prendeva sempre più forza, perché alleato dei giusti è l’universo.
18 At one moment, the fire would die down, to avoid consuming the animals sent against the godlessand to make clear to them by that sight, that the sentence of God was pursuing them;	18 Talvolta la fiamma si attenuava per non bruciare gli animali inviati contro gli empi e per far loro comprendere a tale vista che erano incalzati dal giudizio di Dio.
19 at another, in the very heart of the water, it would burn more fiercely than fire to ruin the produce of awicked land.	19 Altre volte, anche in mezzo all’acqua, la fiamma bruciava oltre la potenza del fuoco per distruggere i germogli di una terra iniqua.
20 How differently with your people! You gave them the food of angels, from heaven untiringly providingthem bread already prepared, containing every delight, to satisfy every taste.	20 Invece hai sfamato il tuo popolo con il cibo degli angeli, dal cielo hai offerto loro un pane pronto senza fatica, capace di procurare ogni delizia e soddisfare ogni gusto.
21 And the substance you gave showed your sweetness towards your children, for, conforming to thetaste of whoever ate it, it transformed itself into what each eater wished.	21 Questo tuo alimento manifestava la tua dolcezza verso i figli, si adattava al gusto di chi ne mangiava, si trasformava in ciò che ognuno desiderava.
22 Snow and ice endured the fire, without melting; this was to show them that, to destroy the harvests oftheir enemies, fire would burn even in hail and flare in fal ing rain,	22 Neve e ghiaccio resistevano al fuoco e non si fondevano, perché sapessero che il fuoco, che ardeva nella grandine e lampeggiava nelle piogge, distruggeva i frutti dei nemici;
23 whereas, on the other hand, it would even forget its own strength in the service of feeding the upright.	23 al contrario, perché i giusti si nutrissero, dimenticava perfino la propria forza.
24 For the creation, being at the service of you, its Creator, tautens to punish the wicked and slackensfor the benefit of those who trust in you.	24 La creazione infatti, obbedendo a te che l’hai fatta, si irrigidisce per punire gli ingiusti e si addolcisce a favore di quelli che confidano in te.
25 And this is why, by changing into al things, it obediently served your all-nourishing bounty,conforming to the wishes of those who were in need;	25 Per questo anche allora, adattandosi a tutto, era al servizio del tuo dono che nutre tutti, secondo il desiderio di chi ti pregava,
26 so that your beloved children, Lord, might learn that the various crops are not what providenourishment, but your word which preserves al who believe in you.	26 perché i tuoi figli, che hai amato, o Signore, imparassero che non le diverse specie di frutti nutrono l’uomo, ma la tua parola tiene in vita coloro che credono in te.
27 For that which fire could not destroy melted in the heat of a single fleeting sunbeam,	27 Ciò che infatti non era stato distrutto dal fuoco si scioglieva appena scaldato da un breve raggio di sole,
28 to show that, to give you thanks, we must rise before the sun and meet you at the dawning of theday;	28 perché fosse noto che si deve prevenire il sole per renderti grazie e incontrarti al sorgere della luce,
29 whereas the hope of the ungrateful melts like winter frost and flows away like water running to waste.	29 poiché la speranza dell’ingrato si scioglierà come brina invernale e si disperderà come un’acqua inutilizzabile.
