1 Thus they were appropriately punished by similar creatures and tormented by swarms of vermin.	1 Per questo ancora mediante simili; cose furon quelli giustamente i tormentati, e sterminati da una turba di bestie.
2 In contrast to this punishment, you did your people a kindness and, to satisfy their sharp appetite,provided quails -- a luscious rarity -- for them to eat.	2 Ma in luogo di tali pene, tu facesti de' favori al tuo popolo concedendogli le bramate delizie di nuovo sapore, le quaglie:
3 Thus the Egyptians, at the repulsive sight of the creatures sent against them, were to find that, thoughthey longed for food, they had lost their natural appetite; whereas your own people, after a short privation, wereto have a rare relish for their portion.	3 Talmente che quelli bramosi di cibo, a motivo di quelle bestie, che l'avevano sotto degli occhi mandate contro di loro, perdevano l'appetito del necessario, questi poi ridotti per poco tempo all'inopia gustarono nuove vivande;
4 Inevitable that relentless want should seize on the former oppressors; enough for your people to beshown how their enemies were being tortured.	4 Perocché conveniva che irremediabile rovina venisse sopra di quelli, che la facevano da tiranni: a questi poi solamente si dimostrasse in qual guisa straziati fossero i loro nemici.
5 Even when the fearful rage of wild animals overtook them and they were perishing from the bites ofwrithing snakes, your retribution did not continue to the end.	5 E allora quando contro di questi infierirono bestie crudeli, eglino erano messi a morte pelle morsicature di velenosi serpenti;
6 Affliction struck them briefly, by way of warning, and they had a saving token to remind them of thecommandment of your Law,	6 Ma non per sempre durò il tuo adegno, ma per poco tempo furono spaventati per loro emendazione, avendo ricevuto il segno di salute, perché si ricordassero de' comandamenti della tua legge.
7 for whoever turned to it was saved, not by what he looked at, but by you, the Saviour of all.	7 Al qual segno chi si rivolgeva, diventava sano, non in virtù di quel, ch'ei vedeva, ma per grazia di te Salvatore di tutti:
8 And by such means you proved to our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil;	8 E con ciò facesti vedere a nostri nemici come tu se' colui, che liberi da ogni male.
9 for them, the bites of locusts and flies proved fatal and no remedy could be found to save their lives,since they deserved to be punished by such creatures.	9 Perocché quelli perirono morsicati dallo locuste, e dalle mosche, nò si trovò rimedio per la loro vita, perché eran degni di essere sterminati da bestie tali:
10 But your children, not even the fangs of poisonous snakes could bring them down; for your mercycame to their help and cured them.	10 Ma i tuoi figliuoli neppur dai velenosi dragoni furono vinti, perché la tua misericordia venne a sanarli:
11 One sting -- how quickly healed!-to remind them of your pronouncements rather than that, by sinkinginto deep forgetfulness, they should be cut off from your kindness.	11 Conciossiaché per farli ricordare de' tuoi precetti erano punti, e tosto erano salvati; affinchè non avvenisse, che perdutane affatto la memoria goder non potessero del tuo ajuto;
12 No herb, no poultice cured them, but your al -healing word, Lord.	12 Imperocché non fu né un'erba, né un lenitivo, che li guarì, ma la tua parola, o Signore, la quale tutto risana;
13 Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again.	13 Perocché tu, o Signore, se' quello, che hai in tua balìa la vita, e la morte, e conduci fino alle porte di morte, e indietro richiami:
14 A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free thesoul that Hades has once received.	14 Or l'uomo ben puo uccidere un altro per malvagità; ma partito, che sia lo spirito, egli non può far, che ritorni, nè richiamerà indietro l'anima altrove già ricettata.
15 It is not possible to escape your hand.	15 Ma di fuggire dalla tua mano non è possibile,
16 The godless who refused to acknowledge you were scourged by the strength of your arm, pursued byno ordinary rains, hail and unrelenting downpours, and consumed by fire.	16 Quindi gli empj, che negavano di conoscerti, furon flagellati dal forte tuo braccio, perseguitati da acque nuove, e grandini, e tempeste, e consunti dal fuoco.
17 Even more wonderful, in the water -- which quenches al -- the fire raged fiercer than ever; for theelements fight for the upright.	17 E questo era il mirabile, che il fuoco attività maggiore aveva nell'acqua, la quale spegne ogni cosa, perché il mondo tutto fa le vendette de' giusti,
18 At one moment, the fire would die down, to avoid consuming the animals sent against the godlessand to make clear to them by that sight, that the sentence of God was pursuing them;	18 Talora poi il fuoco si ammansiva, affinchè non ne fosser brugiate le bestie spedite contro degli empj, ond'eglino ciò veggendo sapessero come per giudizio divino erano straziati.
19 at another, in the very heart of the water, it would burn more fiercely than fire to ruin the produce of awicked land.	19 E in altro tempo il fuoco sopra la natural forza ardeva per ogni parte nell'acqua, affin di sperdere della iniqua terra le produzioni.
20 How differently with your people! You gave them the food of angels, from heaven untiringly providingthem bread already prepared, containing every delight, to satisfy every taste.	20 Ma all'opposto il popolo tuo nutristi col cibo degli Angeli, e dal cielo somministrasti ad essi un pane bell'e fatto senza loro fatica, contenente in se ogni delizia, ed ogni soave sapore;
21 And the substance you gave showed your sweetness towards your children, for, conforming to thetaste of whoever ate it, it transformed itself into what each eater wished.	21 Perocché quella tua sostanza dimostrava come tu se' dolce inverso i figliuoli, e addattandosi al genio di ciascheduno, ella diventava quello, che ciascuno voleva:
22 Snow and ice endured the fire, without melting; this was to show them that, to destroy the harvests oftheir enemies, fire would burn even in hail and flare in fal ing rain,	22 Ma la neve, ed il ghiaccio reggevano alla forza del fuoco senza liquefarsi; affinché (i tuoi) vedessero come i frutti de' nemici erano distrutti dal fuoco ardente, che folgoreggiava in mezzo alla grandine, ed alla pioggia.
23 whereas, on the other hand, it would even forget its own strength in the service of feeding the upright.	23 E qui all'opposto perché i giusti avessero onde sostentarsi, si scordò egli della sua stessa virtù.
24 For the creation, being at the service of you, its Creator, tautens to punish the wicked and slackensfor the benefit of those who trust in you.	24 Perocché la creatura, che serve a te suo facitore, gli ardori raddoppia e a tormentare gli ingiusti, e mite diventa in pro di quelli, che in te confidano.
25 And this is why, by changing into al things, it obediently served your all-nourishing bounty,conforming to the wishes of those who were in need;	25 E quindi ancora (la creatura) trasfigurandosi allora in tutte guise serviva alla tua benignità nutrice di tutti secondo i voti di quelli, che a te ricorrevano.
26 so that your beloved children, Lord, might learn that the various crops are not what providenourishment, but your word which preserves al who believe in you.	26 Affinchè i tuoi figliuoli amati da te, o Signore, riconoscessero come non i frutti rinascenti pascono gli uomini, ma la tua parola è quella che conserva chi crede in te.
27 For that which fire could not destroy melted in the heat of a single fleeting sunbeam,	27 Perocché quello, che non poteva esser consunto dal fuoco, riscaldato a un piccol raggio del sole squagliavasi.
28 to show that, to give you thanks, we must rise before the sun and meet you at the dawning of theday;	28 Affinché sapessero tutti, come dee prevenirsi il sole per la benedizione, e si dee alla levata del sole adorarti.
29 whereas the hope of the ungrateful melts like winter frost and flows away like water running to waste.	29 Perocché la speranza dell'ingrato, come il ghiaccio dell'inverno si scioglie, e si sperde come acqua inutile.
