1 Thus they were appropriately punished by similar creatures and tormented by swarms of vermin.	1 Per questi e simili (ammali) furon degnamente puniti, e ster­minati da gran numero di bestie.
2 In contrast to this punishment, you did your people a kindness and, to satisfy their sharp appetite,provided quails -- a luscious rarity -- for them to eat.	2 Ma invece di tali pene, tu face­sti dei favori al tuo popolo, al quale concedesti ciò che deside­rava il suo gusto, nuovo sapore, preparando a loro cibo le quaglie.
3 Thus the Egyptians, at the repulsive sight of the creatures sent against them, were to find that, thoughthey longed for food, they had lost their natural appetite; whereas your own people, after a short privation, wereto have a rare relish for their portion.	3 Così quelli, sebbene avidi di ci­bo a causa delle bestie che avevan sotto gli occhi, mandate contro di loro, sdegnarono soddisfare anche l'appetito del necessario, mentre questi, ridotti per poco tempo alla miseria, gustarono un cibo nuovo.
4 Inevitable that relentless want should seize on the former oppressors; enough for your people to beshown how their enemies were being tortured.	4 Certo era necessa­rio che inevitabile rovina piom­basse sopra coloro che facevan da tiranni, e che a questi fosse soltanto mostrato come erano sterminati i loro nemici.
5 Even when the fearful rage of wild animals overtook them and they were perishing from the bites ofwrithing snakes, your retribution did not continue to the end.	5 Infatti quando contro questi s'avventò il tremendo furore delle bestie, ed erano sterminati dal morso di tortuosi serpenti,
6 Affliction struck them briefly, by way of warning, and they had a saving token to remind them of thecommandment of your Law,	6 non durò per sempre il tuo sdegno, ma a loro correzione furono per poco spa­ventati, avendo già un segno di salute, per ricordarsi dei coman­damenti della tua legge.
7 for whoever turned to it was saved, not by what he looked at, but by you, the Saviour of all.	7 E chi si rivolgeva a quel segno, non era guarito por ciò che vedeva, ma per te, Salvatore di tutti.
8 And by such means you proved to our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil;	8 E con ciò facesti vedere ai nostri nemici che sei tu quello che liberi da ogni male.
9 for them, the bites of locusts and flies proved fatal and no remedy could be found to save their lives,since they deserved to be punished by such creatures.	9 Infatti quelli pe­rirono morsicati dalle locuste e dalle mosche, nè fu trovato rime­dio per la loro vita, perchè meri­tavano di essere sterminati da tali bestie.
10 But your children, not even the fangs of poisonous snakes could bring them down; for your mercycame to their help and cured them.	10 Invece coi tuoi figli e non ce la poterono nemmeno i denti dei velenosi dragoni, perchè la tua misericordia veniva a gua­rirli.
11 One sting -- how quickly healed!-to remind them of your pronouncements rather than that, by sinkinginto deep forgetfulness, they should be cut off from your kindness.	11 Erano morsi per farli ri­cordare dei tuoi precetti, ma subito eran guariti, perchè, sepolti in profondo oblìo, non si rendes­sero incapaci del tuo aiuto.
12 No herb, no poultice cured them, but your al -healing word, Lord.	12 Certamente non li guarì l'erba, nè il medicamento, ma la tua parola che in tutto risana, o Signore.
13 Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again.	13 Sei tu, o o Signore, che hai il potere della vi­ta e della morte, che conduci fi­no alle porte della morie e ne richiami.
14 A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free thesoul that Hades has once received.	14 L'uomo invece può dar la morte per malizia, ma lo spi­rito, uscito che sia, non tornerà, ed egli non potrà richiamare l'a­nima, che è ricevuta.
15 It is not possible to escape your hand.	15 Fuggire dalla tua mano è impossibile.
16 The godless who refused to acknowledge you were scourged by the strength of your arm, pursued byno ordinary rains, hail and unrelenting downpours, and consumed by fire.	16 E però gli empi, che negavan di conoscerti, furono flagellati dal tuo braccio potente, tempestati da acque inaudite, da grandini, da acquazzoni, e con­sumati dal fuoco.
17 Even more wonderful, in the water -- which quenches al -- the fire raged fiercer than ever; for theelements fight for the upright.	17 E ciò che fa­ ceva stupire era che nell'acqua, la quale tutto spegne, più attivo era il fuoco, facendosi l'universo vendicatore dei giusti.
18 At one moment, the fire would die down, to avoid consuming the animals sent against the godlessand to make clear to them by that sight, that the sentence of God was pursuing them;	18 Per un po' di tempo la fiamma si miti­gava, per non bruciare le bestie mandate contro gli empi, affin­chè essi stessi a tal vista ricono­scessero che erano straziati per divino giudizio.
19 at another, in the very heart of the water, it would burn more fiercely than fire to ruin the produce of awicked land.	19 Altre volte poi il fuoco, al di sopra della sua natura, divampa­va nell'acqua, per distruggere i prodotti di quella terra iniqua.
20 How differently with your people! You gave them the food of angels, from heaven untiringly providingthem bread already prepared, containing every delight, to satisfy every taste.	20 Al contrario, il tuo popolo lo nutristi col pane degli angeli, e dal cielo gli donasti un pane bell'e fatto, senza fatica, contenente in sè ogni delizia ed ogni soavità di sapore.
21 And the substance you gave showed your sweetness towards your children, for, conforming to thetaste of whoever ate it, it transformed itself into what each eater wished.	21 Quel sostentamento che veniva da te, mostrava la dolcezza che hai verso i figli, e, accomodandosi ai desideri di cia­scuno, diventava quello che cia­scuno voleva.
22 Snow and ice endured the fire, without melting; this was to show them that, to destroy the harvests oftheir enemies, fire would burn even in hail and flare in fal ing rain,	22 Ma la neve e il ghiaccio reggevano alla forza del fuoco senza liquefarsi, per far conoscere che il fuoco distruggeva i frutti dei nemici, ardendo tra le grandini e lampeggiando tra le piogge.
23 whereas, on the other hand, it would even forget its own strength in the service of feeding the upright.	23 E al contrario, per nutri­re i giusti si dimenticò anche del­la sua propria natura;
24 For the creation, being at the service of you, its Creator, tautens to punish the wicked and slackensfor the benefit of those who trust in you.	24 perchè la creatura, servendo a te suo crea­tore, s'infiamma per tormentare gli uomini ingiusti, e divien più dolce per far del bene a quelli che confidano in te.
25 And this is why, by changing into al things, it obediently served your all-nourishing bounty,conforming to the wishes of those who were in need;	25 Per questo an­che allora, trasformandosi in ogni maniera, serviva alla tua grazia, nutrice di tutti, secondo la volontà di chi ti pregava,
26 so that your beloved children, Lord, might learn that the various crops are not what providenourishment, but your word which preserves al who believe in you.	26 affìnchè, o Si­gnore, i figli tuoi diletti imparas­sero che non è il riprodursi dei frutti che nutrisce gli uomini, ma è la tua parola che conserva chi crede in te.
27 For that which fire could not destroy melted in the heat of a single fleeting sunbeam,	27 Infatti ciò che non poteva esser consumato dal fuoco si struggeva appena riscaldato da piccolo raggio di sole;
28 to show that, to give you thanks, we must rise before the sun and meet you at the dawning of theday;	28 affinchè tutti sapessero che bisogna prevenire il sole per ringraziarti, e adorarti allo spuntar della luce.
29 whereas the hope of the ungrateful melts like winter frost and flows away like water running to waste.	29 Perchè la speranza dell'ingrato si squaglierà come ghiaccio del­l'inverno, e disparirà come acqua inutile.
