1 She made their actions successful, by means of a holy prophet.	1 Essa diresse le loro imprese per mezzo del santo profeta.
2 They journeyed through an unpeopled desert and pitched their tents in inaccessible places.	2 Attraversarono deserti disabitati, in luoghi deserti alzarono le ten­de.
3 They stood firm against their enemies, fought off their foes.	3 Tennero testa ai nemici, si vendicarono degli avversari.
4 On you they cal ed when they were thirsty, and from the rocky cliff water was given them, from hardstone a remedy for their thirst.	4 Assetati, t'invocarono, e fu per loro fatta sgorgare l'acqua da altis­sima rupe, e il ristoro alla sete ven­ne dalla dura pietra.
5 Thus, what had served to punish their enemies became a benefit for them in their difficulties.	5 Ciò che aveva servito di ca­stigo ai nemici, la mancanza di acqua, fu, nell'abbondanza, di gioia per i figli d'Israele.
6 Whereas their enemies had only the ever-flowing source of a river fouled with mingled blood and mud,	6 Così, mentre gli altri ne mancavano, essi furon trattati bene.
7 to punish them for their decree of infanticide, you gave your people, against al hope, water inabundance,	7 Infatti, invece delle acque del fiume perenne, desti agli ingiusti san­gue umano.
8 once you had shown by the thirst that they were experiencing how severely you were punishing theirenemies.	8 E mentre essi di­ minuivano in pena dell'uccisione dei bambini, desti agli Israe­liti in abbondanza acqua mai sperata.
9 From their own ordeals, which were only loving correction, they realised how an angry sentence wastormenting the godless;	9 Così mostrasti, colla sete che ci fu allora, come sai esaltare i tuoi e fare scempio dei loro avversari.
10 for you had tested your own as a father admonishes, but the others you had punished as a pitilessking condemns,	10 Messi alla pro­va, ricevendo un castigo di mi­sericordia, compresero quali tor­menti dovessero patire gli empi, puniti con ira.
11 and, whether far or near, they were equal y afflicted.	11 Gli uni li prova­sti qual padre che ammonisce, gli altri come re inesorabile che tortura per condannare.
12 For a double sorrow seized on them, and a groaning at the memory of the past;	12 Tan­to assenti che presenti, erano ugualmente tormentati.
13 when they learned that the punishments they were receiving were beneficial to the others, theyrealised it was the Lord,	13 Erano infatti straziati da doppio dolo­ re, e dal pianto per la memoria del passato.
14 while for the man whom long before they had exposed and later mockingly rebuffed, they felt onlyadmiration when al was done, having suffered a thirst so different from that of the upright.	14 Avendo saputo che i loro tormenti eran di van­taggio agli altri, vi conobbero la mano del Signore, e alla fine ammirarono l'accaduto.
15 For their foolish and wicked notions which led them astray into worshipping mindless reptiles andcontemptible beetles, you sent a horde of mindless animals to punish them	15 Quello medesimo che nella crudele espo­sizione avevan rigettato e deri­so alla fine degli avvenimenti l'ammirarono, avendo sofferta una sete ben differente da quella dei giusti.
16 and to teach them that the agent of sin is the agent of punishment.	16 E in pena dei loro sciocchi e ingiusti pensieri, dai quali tratti in errore, adoravano muti serpenti e vili bestie, man­dasti contro di loro gran nume­ro d'animali, a farne scempio,
17 And indeed your al -powerful hand which created the world from formless matter, did not lack meansto unleash a horde of bears or savage lions on them	17 affinché sapessero che ciascu­no è punito per mezzo di quelle cose con cui ha peccato.
18 or unknown beasts, newly created, ful of rage, breathing out fire, or puffing out stinking smoke, orflashing fearful sparks from their eyes,	18 Certamente non era impossibile alla tua mano onnipotente, che creò il mondo da materia informe, mandar contro di loro gran nu­mero di orsi e di audaci leoni,
19 beasts able not only to destroy them, being so savage, but even to strike them dead by their terrifyingappearance.	19 o nuova razza d'ignote bestie piene di furore, spiranti fiamme e esalanti fetido fumo e lancianti dagli occhi orrende scintille,
20 However, without these, one breath could have blown them over, pursued by Justice, whirled awayby the breath of your power. You, however, ordered all things by measure, number and weight.	20 delle quali non solo il morso avreb­be potuto sterminarli, ma la so­la vista li avrebbe fatti morir di paura.
21 For your great power is always at your service, and who can withstand the might of your arm?	21 Ed anche senza questo con un soffio potevano esser fat­ti morire, perseguitati dalle loro stesse opere, e dispersi dal soffio della tua potenza. Ma tu hai dispo­sto tutto in misura, numero e peso.
22 The whole world, for you, can no more than tip a balance, like a drop of morning dew falling on theground.	22 Di sovrana potenza a te solo ne avanza sempre; e alla forza del tuo braccio chi può resistere?
23 Yet you are merciful to al , because you are almighty, you overlook people's sins, so that they canrepent.	23 Tutto il mondo è dinanzi a te come un granello sulla bilancia, e come goccia di mattutina rugiada che scende sulla terra.
24 Yes, you love everything that exists, and nothing that you have made disgusts you, since, if you hadhated something, you would not have made it.	24 Ma tu hai misericordia di tutti, perchè tutto puoi, e dissimuli i peccati degli uomini, perchè se ne pentano.
25 And how could a thing subsist, had you not wil ed it? Or how be preserved, if not cal ed forth by you?	25 Tu ami tutte le cose che esistono, e nulla odii di ciò che hai fatto; infatti, se tu odiassi una cosa, non l'avresti nè ordi­nata nè fatta.
26 No, you spare al , since al is yours, Lord, lover of life!	26 E come potreb­be esistere una cosa, se tu non la volessi? E come si potrebbe conservare, se tu non l'avessi chiamata?
	27 Tu sei indulgente verso tutte le cose, perchè son tue, o Signore, che ami le anime.
