1 She made their actions successful, by means of a holy prophet.	1 Ella diresse i loro passi sotto il governo del santo Profeta.
2 They journeyed through an unpeopled desert and pitched their tents in inaccessible places.	2 Viaggiarono per deserti disabitati, e alzaron capanne in luoghi deserti.
3 They stood firm against their enemies, fought off their foes.	3 Si affrontarono co' lor nemici, e di vendicarci de' loro avversari.
4 On you they cal ed when they were thirsty, and from the rocky cliff water was given them, from hardstone a remedy for their thirst.	4 Erano assetati, e ti invocarono, e sgorgò acqua per essi da altissimo masso, e il ristoro alla sete da dura pietra.
5 Thus, what had served to punish their enemies became a benefit for them in their difficulties.	5 Perocché in quella giusa, che furon puniti i lor nimici rimasi senza acqua da bere, mentre i figliuoli di Israele godevano per averne abbondanza;
6 Whereas their enemies had only the ever-flowing source of a river fouled with mingled blood and mud,	6 Cosi quando questi ne mancavano, ricevettero insigne favore.
7 to punish them for their decree of infanticide, you gave your people, against al hope, water inabundance,	7 Conciossiachè in vece delle acque del fiume perenne tu desti agli ingiusti il sangue umano.
8 once you had shown by the thirst that they were experiencing how severely you were punishing theirenemies.	8 E laddove quelli perivano in pena dell'uccisione de' bambini, tu desti a' tuoi inaspettatamente acqua copiosa,
9 From their own ordeals, which were only loving correction, they realised how an angry sentence wastormenting the godless;	9 E colla sete, che fu allora, tu facesti conoscere in qual modo li tuoi tu esaltassi, e facessi scempio de' loro nemici.
10 for you had tested your own as a father admonishes, but the others you had punished as a pitilessking condemns,	10 Conciossiachè quando essi furon tentati, e afflitti, benché con misericordia, vennero ad intendere quai tormenti patissero gli empj puniti con ira.
11 and, whether far or near, they were equal y afflicted.	11 E gli uni tu li provasti qual padre per ammonirli, gli altri poi qual re inesorabile li mettesti alla tortura per condannarli.
12 For a double sorrow seized on them, and a groaning at the memory of the past;	12 Or eglino e in assenza, e in presenza erano tormentati egualmente.
13 when they learned that the punishments they were receiving were beneficial to the others, theyrealised it was the Lord,	13 Imperocché erano punti da doppia tristezza, e crepacuore colla memoria delle cose passate.
14 while for the man whom long before they had exposed and later mockingly rebuffed, they felt onlyadmiration when al was done, having suffered a thirst so different from that of the upright.	14 Mentre udendo come i loro tormenti divenivano argomento di felicità per quelli, conobber la man del Signore, stupefatti dell'esito delle cose;
15 For their foolish and wicked notions which led them astray into worshipping mindless reptiles andcontemptible beetles, you sent a horde of mindless animals to punish them	15 Imperocché alla fine de' fatti ammiraron colui, del quale si burlavano come di uomo gettato a perire in quella crudele esposizione, mentre non come i giusti avean essi patita la sete.
16 and to teach them that the agent of sin is the agent of punishment.	16 E in pena degli stolti, ed iniqui lor pensamenti, secondo i quali eglino adoravano muti serpenti, e bestie vili, tu mandasti contro di loro una turba di muti animali a farne scempio:
17 And indeed your al -powerful hand which created the world from formless matter, did not lack meansto unleash a horde of bears or savage lions on them	17 Affinchè conoscessero come per quelle cose, pelle quali uno pecca, per le medesime è tormentato;
18 or unknown beasts, newly created, ful of rage, breathing out fire, or puffing out stinking smoke, orflashing fearful sparks from their eyes,	18 Imperocché alla onnipotente tua mano, la quale da informe materia avea creato il mondo, non era difficile il mandar contro di loro una moltitudine di orsi, o de' feroci lioni;
19 beasts able not only to destroy them, being so savage, but even to strike them dead by their terrifyingappearance.	19 O fiere di nuova specie, ed ignote, piene di furore, o spiranti fiato di fuoco, o che spandessero odor di fumo, o vibrasser dagli occhi scintille orrende:
20 However, without these, one breath could have blown them over, pursued by Justice, whirled awayby the breath of your power. You, however, ordered all things by measure, number and weight.	20 Delle quali non solo i morsi avrebbon potuto sterminarli, ma anche la sola vista farli morir di paura.
21 For your great power is always at your service, and who can withstand the might of your arm?	21 Ma anche senza nulla di questo potevano essere uccisi in un fiato, per seguitati dalle proprie loro azioni, e dispersi ad un soffio di tua possanza: ma tu le cose tutte disponi con misura numero, e peso.
22 The whole world, for you, can no more than tip a balance, like a drop of morning dew falling on theground.	22 Perocché tu solo hai sempre potere d'avanzo, e chi può resistere al robusto tuo braccio?
23 Yet you are merciful to al , because you are almighty, you overlook people's sins, so that they canrepent.	23 Perocché il mondo tutto dinanzi a te è come il tratto della bilancia, e come una goccia di rugiada, che cade sulla terra al mattino.
24 Yes, you love everything that exists, and nothing that you have made disgusts you, since, if you hadhated something, you would not have made it.	24 Ma tu hai misericordia di tutti, perché tutto puoi, e dissimuli i peccati degli uomini per amore della penitenza;
25 And how could a thing subsist, had you not wil ed it? Or how be preserved, if not cal ed forth by you?	25 Perocché tu ami tutte le cose, che esistono, e non ne odj veruna di quelle, che da te furon fatte; conciossiachè se tu odiata l'avessi, noll'avresti ordinata, né fatta.
26 No, you spare al , since al is yours, Lord, lover of life!	26 E come durar potrebbe una cosa se tu noi volessi, o conservarsi quello, che non fosse stato voluto da te?
	27 Ma tu se' buono verso tutte le cose, perché sono tue, o amatore dell'anime.
