NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 She made their actions successful, by means of a holy prophet.	1 Essa condusse felicemente le loro imprese per mano di un santo profeta.
2 They journeyed through an unpeopled desert and pitched their tents in inaccessible places.	2 Percorsero un deserto inospitale e fissarono le tende in luoghi impraticabili;
3 They stood firm against their enemies, fought off their foes.	3 si opposero ai nemici e respinsero gli avversari.
4 On you they cal ed when they were thirsty, and from the rocky cliff water was given them, from hardstone a remedy for their thirst.	4 Ebbero sete e gridarono a te, e fu data loro acqua da una roccia scoscesa e rimedio alla sete da una dura pietra.
5 Thus, what had served to punish their enemies became a benefit for them in their difficulties.	5 Infatti ciò che servì per castigare i loro nemici, fu per essi di beneficio nel bisogno.
6 Whereas their enemies had only the ever-flowing source of a river fouled with mingled blood and mud,	6 In luogo della fonte di un fiume perenne, intorbidito con putrido sangue
7 to punish them for their decree of infanticide, you gave your people, against al hope, water inabundance,	7 in punizione di un decreto infanticida, tu desti loro inaspettatamente acqua abbondante,

10 for you had tested your own as a father admonishes, but the others you had punished as a pitilessking condemns,	10 Certamente tu provasti gli uni come un padre che ammonisce, ma ricercasti gli altri come un re severo che condanna.
11 and, whether far or near, they were equal y afflicted.	11 Lontani o vicini erano ugualmente tormentati:
12 For a double sorrow seized on them, and a groaning at the memory of the past;	12 li colse infatti una duplice sofferenza e un gemito per i ricordi delle cose passate.
13 when they learned that the punishments they were receiving were beneficial to the others, theyrealised it was the Lord,	13 Quando udirono che per mezzo delle loro pene quelli erano stati beneficati, vi scorsero il Signore.
14 while for the man whom long before they had exposed and later mockingly rebuffed, they felt onlyadmiration when al was done, having suffered a thirst so different from that of the upright.	14 Poiché colui che prima avevano esposto e poi pubblicamente deriso, al termine degli avvenimenti dovettero ammirarlo, dopo aver sofferto una sete diversa da quella dei giusti.
15 For their foolish and wicked notions which led them astray into worshipping mindless reptiles andcontemptible beetles, you sent a horde of mindless animals to punish them	15 In pena degli stolti ragionamenti della loro ingiustizia, nei quali, errando, rendevano culto ad animali senza ragione e a vili bestie, inviasti contro di loro per punizione una moltitudine di animali senza ragione,
16 and to teach them that the agent of sin is the agent of punishment.	16 perché comprendessero che ognuno è punito per mezzo di quelle cose con le quali pecca.
17 And indeed your al -powerful hand which created the world from formless matter, did not lack meansto unleash a horde of bears or savage lions on them	17 Non era certo in difficoltà la tua mano onnipotente, che aveva creato il mondo da materia informe, di mandare contro di loro una moltitudine di orsi o di leoni feroci,
18 or unknown beasts, newly created, ful of rage, breathing out fire, or puffing out stinking smoke, orflashing fearful sparks from their eyes,	18 o di fiere sconosciute piene di furore, create da poco, o che spirano alito infuocato, o che esalano vapore di fumo, o che sprizzano dagli occhi terribili scintille,
19 beasts able not only to destroy them, being so savage, but even to strike them dead by their terrifyingappearance.	19 delle quali non solo il morso poteva sterminarli, ma anche lo sguardo spaventoso poteva annientarli.
20 However, without these, one breath could have blown them over, pursued by Justice, whirled awayby the breath of your power. You, however, ordered all things by measure, number and weight.	20 Anche senza di queste cose, con un solo soffio, potevano cadere, perseguitati dalla giustizia e annientati dal tuo soffio onnipotente; ma tu hai disposto ogni cosa con misura, numero e peso.
21 For your great power is always at your service, and who can withstand the might of your arm?	21 Poiché la tua straordinaria potenza è sempre con te, chi potrà resistere alla forza del tuo braccio?
22 The whole world, for you, can no more than tip a balance, like a drop of morning dew falling on theground.	22 Tutto l'universo davanti a te è come polvere sulla bilancia, e come una goccia di rugiada che di buon mattino scende sulla terra.
23 Yet you are merciful to al , because you are almighty, you overlook people's sins, so that they canrepent.	23 Hai pietà di tutti, perché tutto puoi e dimentichi i peccati degli uomini in vista della conversione.
24 Yes, you love everything that exists, and nothing that you have made disgusts you, since, if you hadhated something, you would not have made it.	24 Ami tutte le cose che esistono e niente detesti di ciò che hai fatto, perché se tu odiassi qualche cosa, neppure l'avresti formata.
25 And how could a thing subsist, had you not wil ed it? Or how be preserved, if not cal ed forth by you?	25 E come potrebbe sussistere una cosa, se tu non volessi, o conservarsi ciò che non è stato da te chiamato?
26 No, you spare al , since al is yours, Lord, lover of life!	26 Ma tu hai pietà di tutte le cose, perché sono tue, Signore, amante della vita.
