1 Composition of Qoheleth son of David, king in Jerusalem.	1 Parole dell'Ecclesiaste, figlio di David, re di Gerusalemme.
2 Sheer futility, Qoheleth says. Sheer futility: everything is futile!	2 Vanità delle vanità — disse l'Ecclesiaste — vanità delle vanità. Tutto è vanità.
3 What profit can we show for al our toil, toiling under the sun?	3 Qual vantaggio trae l'uomo da tutta la fatica in cui s'affanna sotto il sole?
4 A generation goes, a generation comes, yet the earth stands firm for ever.	4 Una generazione va e l'altra viene, ma la terra rimane sempre al suo posto.
5 The sun rises, the sun sets; then to its place it speeds and there it rises.	5 Il sole si leva e tramonta, ritorna al suo posto per rinascere,
6 Southward goes the wind, then turns to the north; it turns and turns again; then back to its circling goesthe wind.	6 gira verso il mezzogiorno e piega all'aquilone. Il vento sì spande in ogni parte sopra tutte le cose e ritorna a prendere i suoi giri.
7 Into the sea go al the rivers, and yet the sea is never fil ed, and stil to their goal the rivers go.	7 Tutti i fiumi si gettano in mare, e il mare non trabocca: i fiumi ritornano al luogo dove son nati, per riprendere di nuovo il loro corso.
8 Al things are wearisome. No one can say that eyes have not had enough of seeing, ears their fil ofhearing.	8 Tutte le cose son diffìcili: l'uomo non ha parole per spiegarle. L'occhio non è mai sazio di vedere, l'orecchio non è mai pieno di sentire.
9 What was, wil be again, what has been done, wil be done again, and there is nothing new under thesun!	9 Che è mai quello che fu? Quello che sarà. E quello che è stato fatto? Ciò che sarà fatto ancora.
10 Take anything which people acclaim as being new: it existed in the centuries preceding us.	10 Non c'è nulla di nuovo sotto il sole. Di nessuna cosa si può dire: « Questa è nuova »: già fu nei secoli che ci precedettero.
11 No memory remains of the past, and so it wil be for the centuries to come -- they will not beremembered by their successors.	11 Delle cose d'altri tempi non rimane memoria; ma neppure di ciò che sarà nell'avvenire resterà la memoria per quelli che verranno negli ultimi tempi.
12 I, Qoheleth, have reigned over Israel in Jerusalem.	12 Io, Ecclesiaste, fui re d'Israele in Gerusalemme,
13 Wisely I have applied myself to investigation and exploration of everything that happens under heaven.What a wearisome task God has given humanity to keep us busy!	13 e feci nell'animo mio il proposito di fare con sapienza delle ricerche e degli studi sopra tutto ciò che accade sotto il sole. Questa penosissima occupazione Dio l'ha data ai figli degli uomini, perchè vi si affatichino.
14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun: how futile it al is, mere chasing after the wind!	14 Osservai tutto quello che si fa sotto il sole, e vidi che tutto è vanità e afflizione di spirito.
15 What is twisted cannot be straightened, what is not there cannot be counted.	15 I perversi diffìcilmente si correggono, e il numero degli stolti è infinito.
16 I thought to myself: I have acquired a greater stock of wisdom than anyone before me in Jerusalem. Imyself have mastered every kind of wisdom and science.	16 Io dissi in cuor mio: Ecco, io son diventato grande ed ho sorpassato in sapienza tutti quelli che furono avanti di me in Gerusalemme; la mia mente ha contemplato con sapienza molte cose, e ne ho imparate.
17 I have applied myself to understanding philosophy and science, stupidity and fol y, and I now realisethat all this too is chasing after the wind.	17 Poi applicai la mia mente a conoscere la prudenza, e la dottrina, e gli errori, e la stoltezza, e riconobbi che anche in questo c'era affanno e afflizione di spirito.
18 Much wisdom, much grief; the more knowledge, the more sorrow.	18 Perchè dove c'è molta sapienza c'è molto sdegno, e chi moltiplica la scienza moltiplica gli affanni.
