NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Composition of Qoheleth son of David, king in Jerusalem.	1 Parole di Qohèlet, figlio di Davide, re di Gerusalemme.
2 Sheer futility, Qoheleth says. Sheer futility: everything is futile!	2 O vanità immensa, ha detto Qohèlet, o vanità immensa: tutto è vanità.
3 What profit can we show for al our toil, toiling under the sun?	3 Che vantaggio viene all'uomo da tutta la fatica in cui si affatica sotto il sole?
4 A generation goes, a generation comes, yet the earth stands firm for ever.	4 Una generazione va e una generazione viene; eppure la terra sta sempre ferma.
5 The sun rises, the sun sets; then to its place it speeds and there it rises.	5 Il sole sorge, il sole tramonta e si affretta al suo luogo.
6 Southward goes the wind, then turns to the north; it turns and turns again; then back to its circling goesthe wind.	6 Va verso sud e gira verso nord il vento. Il vento, nel suo cammino, non fa che girare: ritorna sempre sulle sue spire.
7 Into the sea go al the rivers, and yet the sea is never fil ed, and stil to their goal the rivers go.	7 Tutti i fiumi scorrono verso il mare e il mare non si empie mai; sempre i fiumi tornano a fluire verso il luogo dove vanno scorrendo.
8 Al things are wearisome. No one can say that eyes have not had enough of seeing, ears their fil ofhearing.	8 Ogni discorso resta a mezzo, perché l'uomo non riesce a concluderlo. L'occhio non si sazia di ciò che vede, né l'orecchio si riempie di ciò che ode.
9 What was, wil be again, what has been done, wil be done again, and there is nothing new under thesun!	9 Ciò che è stato è ciò che sarà, ciò che è stato fatto è ciò che si farà. Niente di nuovo sotto il sole.
10 Take anything which people acclaim as being new: it existed in the centuries preceding us.	10 Qualche volta si sente dire: "Ecco, questa è una cosa nuova". Ma questa fu già nei secoli che furono prima di noi.
11 No memory remains of the past, and so it wil be for the centuries to come -- they will not beremembered by their successors.	11 Non c'è ricordo degli antichi e non ci sarà neppure dei posteri presso coloro che verranno dopo di loro.
12 I, Qoheleth, have reigned over Israel in Jerusalem.	12 Io, Qohèlet, sono stato re d'Israele in Gerusalemme.
13 Wisely I have applied myself to investigation and exploration of everything that happens under heaven.What a wearisome task God has given humanity to keep us busy!	13 Mi sono dato a cercare e a riflettere, per mezzo della sapienza, su tutto ciò che avviene sotto il cielo. E' una brutta occupazione, questa, che Dio ha dato agli uomini perché vi si occupino.
14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun: how futile it al is, mere chasing after the wind!	14 Così ho osservato tutte le opere che si fanno sotto il sole e ho concluso che tutto è vanità e occupazione senza senso.
15 What is twisted cannot be straightened, what is not there cannot be counted.	15 Ciò che è storto non si può raddrizzare, né ciò che manca si può contare.
16 I thought to myself: I have acquired a greater stock of wisdom than anyone before me in Jerusalem. Imyself have mastered every kind of wisdom and science.	16 Feci fra me queste riflessioni. Ecco, sono diventato più grande e più sapiente di quanti hanno regnato prima di me in Gerusalemme; la mia mente ha acquistato molta sapienza e scienza.
17 I have applied myself to understanding philosophy and science, stupidity and fol y, and I now realisethat all this too is chasing after the wind.	17 Ma dopo essermi dato alla ricerca della sapienza e della scienza, della follia e della stoltezza sono arrivato alla conclusione che anche questa è un'occupazione assurda, perché
18 Much wisdom, much grief; the more knowledge, the more sorrow.	18 dove c'è molta sapienza c'è molta tristezza, e, se si aumenta la scienza, si aumenta il dolore.
