NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
[For the choirmaster Psalm Of David] Blessed is anyone who cares for the poor and the weak; in timeof trouble Yahweh rescues him.1 For the leader. A psalm of David.
Yahweh protects him, gives him life and happiness on earth. Do not abandon him to his enemies'pleasure!2 Happy those concerned for the lowly and poor; when misfortune strikes, the LORD delivers them.
Yahweh sustains him on his bed of sickness; you transform altogether the bed where he lies sick.3 The LORD keeps and preserves them, makes them happy in the land, and does not betray them to their enemies.
For my part I said, 'Yahweh, take pity on me! Cure me for I have sinned against you.'4 The LORD sustains them on their sickbed, allays the malady when they are ill.
My enemies speak to me only of disaster, 'When wil he die and his name disappear?'5 Once I prayed, "LORD, have mercy on me; heal me, I have sinned against you.
When people come to see me their talk is hol ow, when they get out they spread the news with spite intheir hearts.6 My enemies say the worst of me: 'When will that one die and be forgotten?'
Al who hate me whisper together about me and reckon I deserve the misery I suffer.7 When people come to visit me, they speak without sincerity. Their hearts store up malice; they leave and spread their vicious lies.
'A fatal sickness has a grip on him; now that he is down, he will never get up again.'8 My foes all whisper against me; they imagine the worst about me:
Even my trusted friend on whom I relied, who shared my table, takes advantage of me.9 I have a deadly disease, they say; I will never rise from my sickbed.
But you, Yahweh, take pity on me! Put me on my feet and I wil give them their due.10 Even the friend who had my trust, who shared my table, has scorned me.
This wil convince me that you delight in me, if my enemy no longer exults over me.11 But you, LORD, have mercy and raise me up that I may repay them as they deserve."
Then you wil keep me unscathed, and set me in your presence for ever.12 By this I know you are pleased with me, that my enemy no longer jeers at me.
Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from eternity to eternity. Amen, Amen.13 For my integrity you have supported me and let me stand in your presence forever.
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from all eternity and forever. Amen. Amen.
