1 Zophar of Naamath spoke next. He said:	1 Ma Sophar di Naamath rispose, e disse:
2 Is babbling to go without an answer? Is wordiness a proof of uprightness?	2 Forse colui, che mollo discorre non avrà ancor da ascoltare? Od un gran parlatore sarà dichiarato giusto?
3 Do you think your talking strikes people dumb, will you jeer with no one to refute you?	3 Tu solo farai tacer gli uomini? E dopo avere scherniti gli altri da nissuno sarai confutato?
4 These were your words, 'My conduct is pure, in your eyes I am free of blame!'	4 Perocché tu hai detto: La mia dottrina è pura, ed io son mondo negli occhi tuoi.
5 Wil no one let God speak, open his lips and give you answer,	5 Cosi volesse Dio parlare egli con te, e aprir con te la sua bocca:
6 show you the secrets of wisdom which put all cleverness to shame? Then you would realise that Godis cal ing you to account for your sin.	6 Per svelarti i segreti di sua sapienza, e come moltiplice è la sua legge, onde tu comprendessi come molto meno egli esige da te di quel, che si meriti la tua ingiustizia.
7 Can you claim to fathom the depth of God, can you reach the limit of Shaddai?	7 Forse tu scoprirai gli andamenti di Dio, e intenderai perfettamente l'Onnipotente?
8 It is higher than the heavens: what can you do? It is deeper than Sheol: what can you know?	8 Egli è più alto del cielo, e che farai tu? egli è più profondo che non è l'inferno, e come potrai conoscerlo?
9 It would be longer to measure than the earth and broader than the sea.	9 Egli è di misura più estesa, che non è la terra, e più ampio del mare.
10 If he intervenes to close or convoke the assembly, who is to prevent him?	10 S'ei metterà sossopra tutte le cose, o le confonderà tutte insieme, chi a lui si opporrà?
11 He knows how deceptive human beings are, and he sees their misdeeds too, and marks them wel .	11 Or ei conosce la vanità de'mortali, e veggendo la loro iniquità non ne farà egli conto?
12 Hence empty-headed people would do wel to study sense and people who behave like wild donkeysto let themselves be tamed.	12 L'uomo stolto si leva in superbia, e qual asinello salvatico si crede nato per non aver freno.
13 Come, reconsider your attitude, stretch out your hands towards him!	13 Ma tu ti se' indurato in cuor tuo, ed hai stese le mani verso di lui.
14 If you repudiate the sin which you have doubtless committed and do not al ow wickedness to live onin your tents,	14 Se rimoverai da te l'iniquità delle tue mani, e se scevra d'ingiustizia rimarrà la tua casa:
15 you wil be able to raise an unsullied face, unwavering and free from fear,	15 Allora essendo senza macola potrai alzar la tua faccia, ed avrai fermo stato senza timori.
16 for you wil forget about your misery, thinking of it only as a flood that passed long ago.	16 E ti scorderai della tua stessa miseria, o te ne ricorderai, come di una piena di acque che già passarono.
17 Then begins an existence more radiant than noon, and the very darkness wil be bright as morning.	17 E spunterà a te sulla sera una luce, come di mezzogiorno, e quando ti crederai distrutto sorgerai, come la stella della mattina.
18 Confident because there is hope; after your troubles, you wil sleep secure.	18 E nella tua espettazione riporrai e tua fidanza, e sepolto dormirai tranquillamente.
19 When you lie down to rest, no one will trouble you, and many wil seek your favour.	19 Riposerai, e non sarà chi ti rechi, terrore, e moltissimi a te porgeranno preghiere.
20 But as for the wicked, their eyes are weary, there is no refuge for them; their only hope is to breathetheir last.	20 Ma si seccheranno gli occhi degli empj, i quali non troveranno scampo; e le loro speranze saranno in abominio all'anima loro.
