NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Leave, move on from here, you and the people whom you have broughthere from Egypt, to the country that I swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that I would give to their descendants.1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens : Vade, ascende de loco isto tu, et populus tuus quem eduxisti de terra Ægypti, in terram quam juravi Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, dicens : Semini tuo dabo eam :
I shal send an angel in front of you and drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, thePerizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites.2 et mittam præcursorem tui angelum, ut ejiciam Chananæum, et Amorrhæum, et Hethæum, et Pherezæum, et Hevæum, et Jebusæum,
Move on towards a country flowing with milk and honey, but I myself shal not be going with you or Imight annihilate you on the way, for you are an obstinate people.'3 et intres in terram fluentem lacte et melle. Non enim ascendam tecum, quia populus duræ cervicis es : ne forte disperdam te in via.
On hearing these stern words the people went into mourning and no one wore his ornaments.4 Audiensque populus sermonem hunc pessimum, luxit : et nullus ex more indutus est cultu suo.
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Say to the Israelites, "You are an obstinate people. If I were to go withyou even for a moment, I should annihilate you. So now take off your ornaments, and then I shal decide how todeal with you!" '5 Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen : Loquere filiis Israël : Populus duræ cervicis es : semel ascendam in medio tui, et delebo te. Jam nunc depone ornatum tuum, ut sciam quid faciam tibi.
So, from Mount Horeb onwards, the Israelites stripped themselves of their ornaments.6 Deposuerunt ergo filii Israël ornatum suum a monte Horeb.
Moses used to take the Tent and pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp. He called it theTent of Meeting. Anyone who wanted to consult Yahweh would go out to the Tent of Meeting, outside the camp.7 Moyses quoque tollens tabernaculum, tetendit extra castra procul, vocavitque nomen ejus, Tabernaculum f?deris. Et omnis populus, qui habebat aliquam quæstionem, egrediebatur ad tabernaculum f?deris, extra castra.
Whenever Moses went out to the Tent, the people would al stand up and every man would stand atthe door of his tent and watch Moses until he went into the Tent.8 Cumque egrederetur Moyses ad tabernaculum, surgebat universa plebs, et stabat unusquisque in ostio papilionis sui, aspiciebantque tergum Moysi, donec ingrederetur tentorium.
And whenever Moses went into the Tent, the pil ar of cloud would come down and station itself at theentrance to the Tent, while Yahweh spoke with Moses.9 Ingresso autem illo tabernaculum f?deris, descendebat columna nubis, et stabat ad ostium, loquebaturque cum Moyse,
The people could al see the pil ar of cloud stationed at the entrance to the Tent and the people wouldal stand up and bow low, each at the door of his tent.10 cernentibus universis quod columna nubis staret ad ostium tabernaculi. Stabantque ipsi, et adorabant per fores tabernaculorum suorum.
Yahweh would talk to Moses face to face, as a man talks to his friend, and afterwards he would comeback to the camp, but the young man who was his servant, Joshua son of Nun, never left the inside of the Tent.11 Loquebatur autem Dominus ad Moysen facie ad faciem, sicut solet loqui homo ad amicum suum. Cumque ille reverteretur in castra, minister ejus Josue filius Nun, puer, non recedebat de tabernaculo.
Moses said to Yahweh, 'Look, you say to me, "Make the people move on," but you have not told mewhom you are going to send with me, although you have said, "I know you by name and you enjoy my favour."12 Dixit autem Moyses ad Dominum : Præcipis ut educam populum istum : et non indicas mihi quem missurus es mecum, præsertim cum dixeris : Novi te ex nomine, et invenisti gratiam coram me.
If indeed I enjoy your favour, please show me your ways, so that I understand you and continue toenjoy your favour; consider too that this nation is your people.'13 Si ergo inveni gratiam in conspectu tuo, ostende mihi faciem tuam, ut sciam te, et inveniam gratiam ante oculos tuos : respice populum tuum gentem hanc.
Yahweh then said, 'I myself shall go with you and I shall give you rest.'14 Dixitque Dominus : Facies mea præcedet te, et requiem dabo tibi.
To which he said, 'If you do not come yourself, do not make us move on from here,15 Et ait Moyses : Si non tu ipse præcedas, ne educas nos de loco isto.
for how can it be known that I and my people enjoy your favour, if not by your coming with us? By thiswe shal be marked out, I and your people, from al the peoples on the face of the earth.'16 In quo enim scire poterimus ego et populus tuus invenisse nos gratiam in conspectu tuo, nisi ambulaveris nobiscum, ut glorificemur ab omnibus populis qui habitant super terram ?
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Again I shal do what you have asked, because you enjoy my favourand because I know you by name.'17 Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen : Et verbum istud, quod locutus es, faciam : invenisti enim gratiam coram me, et teipsum novi ex nomine.
He then said, 'Please show me your glory.'18 Qui ait : Ostende mihi gloriam tuam.
Yahweh said, 'I shal make al my goodness pass before you, and before you I shal pronounce thename Yahweh; and I am gracious to those to whom I am gracious and I take pity on those on whom I take pity.19 Respondit : Ego ostendam omne bonum tibi, et vocabo in nomine Domini coram te : et miserebor cui voluero, et clemens ero in quem mihi placuerit.
But my face', he said, 'you cannot see, for no human being can see me and survive.'20 Rursumque ait : Non poteris videre faciem meam : non enim videbit me homo et vivet.
Then Yahweh said, 'Here is a place near me. You will stand on the rock,21 Et iterum : Ecce, inquit, est locus apud me, et stabis supra petram.
and when my glory passes by, I shal put you in a cleft of the rock and shield you with my hand until Ihave gone past.22 Cumque transibit gloria mea, ponam te in foramine petræ, et protegam dextera mea, donec transeam :
Then I shal take my hand away and you will see my back; but my face wil not be seen.'23 tollamque manum meam, et videbis posteriora mea : faciem autem meam videre non poteris.
