1 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Leave, move on from here, you and the people whom you have broughthere from Egypt, to the country that I swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that I would give to their descendants.	1 Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Tu vas monter maintenant, avec le peuple que j’ai fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, vers le pays pour lequel j’ai fait ce serment à Abraham, Isaac et Jacob: Je le donnerai à ta descendance.
2 I shal send an angel in front of you and drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, thePerizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites.	2 J’enverrai devant toi un ange pour chasser le Cananéen, l’Amorite, le Hittite, le Périsite, le Hivvite et le Jébusite,
3 Move on towards a country flowing with milk and honey, but I myself shal not be going with you or Imight annihilate you on the way, for you are an obstinate people.'	3 mais je ne monterai pas au milieu de vous vers ce pays où ruissellent le lait et le miel, car vous êtes un peuple à la nuque raide et je risquerais de vous exterminer en chemin.”
4 On hearing these stern words the people went into mourning and no one wore his ornaments.	4 Le peuple entendit cette parole sévère; ils prirent le deuil, et personne n’osa plus mettre ses habits de fête.
5 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Say to the Israelites, "You are an obstinate people. If I were to go withyou even for a moment, I should annihilate you. So now take off your ornaments, and then I shal decide how todeal with you!" '	5 Yahvé dit encore à Moïse: “Dis ceci aux Israélites: Vous êtes un peuple à la nuque raide. Si je venais avec vous, seulement pour un moment, je vous exterminerais. Maintenant donc, enlevez vos habits de fête et je verrai comment vous traiter.”
6 So, from Mount Horeb onwards, the Israelites stripped themselves of their ornaments.	6 Les Israélites enlevèrent donc leurs vêtements de fête au départ du mont Horeb.
7 Moses used to take the Tent and pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp. He called it theTent of Meeting. Anyone who wanted to consult Yahweh would go out to the Tent of Meeting, outside the camp.	7 Moïse prit la Tente et la planta pour lui à l’extérieur, loin du camp, et il l’appela la Tente du Rendez-Vous. Celui qui voulait consulter Yahvé se dirigeait vers la Tente du Rendez-Vous, à l’extérieur du camp.
8 Whenever Moses went out to the Tent, the people would al stand up and every man would stand atthe door of his tent and watch Moses until he went into the Tent.	8 Lorsque Moïse se dirigeait vers la Tente, tout le peuple se levait et restait debout, chacun à l’entrée de sa propre tente. Et ils suivaient Moïse du regard jusqu’à ce qu’il entre dans la Tente.
9 And whenever Moses went into the Tent, the pil ar of cloud would come down and station itself at theentrance to the Tent, while Yahweh spoke with Moses.	9 Dès que Moïse entrait dans la Tente, la colonne de nuée descendait et s’arrêtait à l’entrée de la Tente. Alors Yahvé parlait avec Moïse.
10 The people could al see the pil ar of cloud stationed at the entrance to the Tent and the people wouldal stand up and bow low, each at the door of his tent.	10 Tout le peuple voyait la colonne de nuée s’arrêter à l’entrée de la Tente; tout le peuple aussitôt se prosternait, chacun à l’entrée de sa propre tente.
11 Yahweh would talk to Moses face to face, as a man talks to his friend, and afterwards he would comeback to the camp, but the young man who was his servant, Joshua son of Nun, never left the inside of the Tent.	11 Alors Yahvé parlait à Moïse face à face, comme un homme parle avec son ami; puis Moïse retournait vers le camp, mais son serviteur, le jeune Josué, fils de Noun, ne quittait pas la Tente.
12 Moses said to Yahweh, 'Look, you say to me, "Make the people move on," but you have not told mewhom you are going to send with me, although you have said, "I know you by name and you enjoy my favour."	12 Moïse dit à Yahvé: “Tu me dis de conduire ce peuple, mais tu ne m’as pas fait connaître comment tu me feras accompagner. Pourtant tu m’as dit: Je te connais par ton nom et tu as trouvé grâce à mes yeux.
13 If indeed I enjoy your favour, please show me your ways, so that I understand you and continue toenjoy your favour; consider too that this nation is your people.'	13 Si donc j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, fais-moi connaître tes chemins pour que je te connaisse et que je trouve grâce à tes yeux. N’oublie pas que cette nation est ton peuple!”
14 Yahweh then said, 'I myself shall go with you and I shall give you rest.'	14 Yahvé répondit: “J’irai moi-même et je te donnerai le repos.”
15 To which he said, 'If you do not come yourself, do not make us move on from here,	15 Moïse lui dit: “Si ta Face ne vient pas avec nous, ne nous fais pas partir d’ici;
16 for how can it be known that I and my people enjoy your favour, if not by your coming with us? By thiswe shal be marked out, I and your people, from al the peoples on the face of the earth.'	16 mais si tu marches avec nous, je saurai que tu nous traites de façon spéciale, moi et mon peuple, et que tu nous as mis à part de tout autre peuple sur la surface de la terre.”
17 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Again I shal do what you have asked, because you enjoy my favourand because I know you by name.'	17 Yahvé dit alors à Moïse: “Je ferai pour toi, même ce que tu viens de dire, car tu as trouvé grâce à mes yeux et je te connais par ton nom.”
18 He then said, 'Please show me your glory.'	18 Moïse dit: “Fais-moi donc voir ta Gloire!”
19 Yahweh said, 'I shal make al my goodness pass before you, and before you I shal pronounce thename Yahweh; and I am gracious to those to whom I am gracious and I take pity on those on whom I take pity.	19 Et Lui répondit: “Je vais faire passer devant toi toute ma bonté, et je prononcerai devant toi le Nom de Yahvé, car ma faveur va à qui je la donne, et j’ai pitié de qui j’ai pitié.”
20 But my face', he said, 'you cannot see, for no human being can see me and survive.'	20 Il ajouta pourtant: “Tu ne pourras pas voir ma Face, car l’homme ne peut me voir sans mourir.”
21 Then Yahweh said, 'Here is a place near me. You will stand on the rock,	21 Yahvé dit: “Vois cette place près de moi; tu te tiendras ici sur le rocher et,
22 and when my glory passes by, I shal put you in a cleft of the rock and shield you with my hand until Ihave gone past.	22 lorsque ma Gloire passera, je te mettrai dans la fente du rocher et ma main te couvrira jusqu’à ce que je sois passé.
23 Then I shal take my hand away and you will see my back; but my face wil not be seen.'	23 Puis je retirerai ma main et tu me verras de dos, car ma Face, nul ne peut la voir.”
