NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Leave, move on from here, you and the people whom you have broughthere from Egypt, to the country that I swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that I would give to their descendants.1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen: “ Vade, ascende de loco isto, tu et populus tuus, quem eduxisti de terra Aegypti, in terram, quam iuravi Abraham, Isaac et Iacob dicens: Semini tuo dabo eam.
I shal send an angel in front of you and drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, thePerizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites.2 Et mittam praecursorem tui angelum et eiciam Chananaeum et Amorraeum et Hetthaeum et Pherezaeum et Hevaeum et Iebusaeum,
Move on towards a country flowing with milk and honey, but I myself shal not be going with you or Imight annihilate you on the way, for you are an obstinate people.'3 et intres in terram fluentem lacte et melle. Non enim ascendam tecum, quia populus durae cervicis es, ne forte disperdam te in via ”.
On hearing these stern words the people went into mourning and no one wore his ornaments.4 Audiens populus sermonem hunc pessimum luxit, et nullus ex more indutus est cultu suo.
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Say to the Israelites, "You are an obstinate people. If I were to go withyou even for a moment, I should annihilate you. So now take off your ornaments, and then I shal decide how todeal with you!" '5 Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen: “ Loquere filiis Israel: Populus durae cervicis es; uno momento, si ascendam in medio tui, delebo te. Nunc autem depone ornatum tuum, ut sciam quid faciam tibi ”.
So, from Mount Horeb onwards, the Israelites stripped themselves of their ornaments.6 Deposuerunt ergo filii Israel ornatum suum a monte Horeb.
Moses used to take the Tent and pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp. He called it theTent of Meeting. Anyone who wanted to consult Yahweh would go out to the Tent of Meeting, outside the camp.7 Moyses autem tollens tabernaculum tetendit ei extra castra procul; vocavitque nomen eius Tabernaculum conventus. Et omnis, qui quaerebat Dominum, egrediebatur ad tabernaculum conventus extra castra.
Whenever Moses went out to the Tent, the people would al stand up and every man would stand atthe door of his tent and watch Moses until he went into the Tent.8 Cumque egrederetur Moyses ad tabernaculum, surgebat universa plebs, et stabat unusquisque in ostio papilionis sui; aspiciebantque tergum Moysi, donec ingrederetur tabernaculum.
And whenever Moses went into the Tent, the pil ar of cloud would come down and station itself at theentrance to the Tent, while Yahweh spoke with Moses.9 Ingresso autem illo tabernaculum, descendebat columna nubis et stabat ad ostium; loquebaturque cum Moyse,
The people could al see the pil ar of cloud stationed at the entrance to the Tent and the people wouldal stand up and bow low, each at the door of his tent.10 cernentibus universis quod columna nubis staret ad ostium tabernaculi. Stabantque ipsi et adorabant per fores tabernaculorum suorum.
Yahweh would talk to Moses face to face, as a man talks to his friend, and afterwards he would comeback to the camp, but the young man who was his servant, Joshua son of Nun, never left the inside of the Tent.11 Loquebatur autem Dominus ad Moysen facie ad faciem, sicut solet loqui homo ad amicum suum. Cumque ille reverteretur in castra, minister eius Iosue filius Nun puer non recedebat de medio tabernaculi.
Moses said to Yahweh, 'Look, you say to me, "Make the people move on," but you have not told mewhom you are going to send with me, although you have said, "I know you by name and you enjoy my favour."12 Dixit autem Moyses ad Dominum: “ Praecipis, ut educam populum istum, et non indicas mihi, quem missurus es mecum; cum dixeris: "Novi te ex nomine, et invenisti gratiam coram me".
If indeed I enjoy your favour, please show me your ways, so that I understand you and continue toenjoy your favour; consider too that this nation is your people.'13 Si ergo inveni gratiam in conspectu tuo, ostende mihi viam tuam, ut sciam te et inveniam gratiam ante oculos tuos; respice quia populus tuus est natio haec ”.
Yahweh then said, 'I myself shall go with you and I shall give you rest.'14 Dixitque Dominus: “ Facies mea ibit, et requiem dabo tibi ”.
To which he said, 'If you do not come yourself, do not make us move on from here,15 Et ait Moyses: “ Si non tu ipse eas, ne educas nos de loco isto;
for how can it be known that I and my people enjoy your favour, if not by your coming with us? By thiswe shal be marked out, I and your people, from al the peoples on the face of the earth.'16 in quo enim scietur me et populum tuum invenisse gratiam in conspectu tuo, nisi ambulaveris nobiscum, ut glorificemur ego et populus tuus prae omnibus populis, qui habitant super terram? ”.
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Again I shal do what you have asked, because you enjoy my favourand because I know you by name.'17 Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen: “ Et verbum istud, quod locutus es, faciam; invenisti enim gratiam coram me, et teipsum novi ex nomine ”.
He then said, 'Please show me your glory.'18 Qui ait: “ Ostende mihi gloriam tuam ”.
Yahweh said, 'I shal make al my goodness pass before you, and before you I shal pronounce thename Yahweh; and I am gracious to those to whom I am gracious and I take pity on those on whom I take pity.19 Respondit: “ Ego ostendam omne bonum tibi et vocabo in nomine Domini coram te; et miserebor, cui voluero, et clemens ero, in quem mihi placuerit ”.
But my face', he said, 'you cannot see, for no human being can see me and survive.'20 Rursumque ait: “ Non poteris videre faciem meam; non enim videbit me homo et vivet ”.
Then Yahweh said, 'Here is a place near me. You will stand on the rock,21 Et iterum: “ Ecce, inquit, est locus apud me, stabis super petram;
and when my glory passes by, I shal put you in a cleft of the rock and shield you with my hand until Ihave gone past.22 cumque transibit gloria mea, ponam te in foramine petrae et protegam dextera mea, donec transeam;
Then I shal take my hand away and you will see my back; but my face wil not be seen.'23 tollamque manum meam, et videbis posteriora mea; faciem autem meam videre non poteris ”.
