Holofernes, general-in-chief of the Assyrian army, received the intel igence that the Israelites werepreparing for war, that they had closed the mountain passes, fortified al the high peaks and laid obstructions inthe plains.1 Da wurde Holophernes, dem Heerführer der assyrischen Streitmacht, die Meldung gebracht, daß die Söhne Israels sich zum Kampf rüsteten, die Zugänge zum Gebirge abriegelten und jeden hohen Bergesgipfel befestigten und in den Ebenen Hindernisse legten.
Holofernes was furious. He summoned al the princes of Moab, al the generals of Ammon and al thesatraps of the coastal regions.2 Da entbrannte er in heftigem Zorn und berief alle Führer Moabs, die Heerführer Ammons und alle Statthalter des Küstengebietes.
'Men of Canaan,' he said, 'tel me: what people is this that occupies the hill-country? What towns does itinhabit? How large is its army? What are the sources of its power and strength? Who is the king who rules it andcommands its army?3 Er sprach zu ihnen: "Meldet mir doch, ihr Söhne Kanaans, wer dieses Volk ist, das im Gebirge sitzt, welche Städte sie bewohnen, wie groß ihre Streitkräfte sind, worin eigentlich ihre Kraft und ihre Stärke besteht, wer über sie als König herrscht und ihr Heer führt,
Why have they disdained to wait on me, as all the western peoples have?'4 und warum sie unter allen Bewohnern der westlichen Länder sich weigerten, mir zu huldigen."
Achior, leader of al the Ammonites, replied, 'May my lord be pleased to listen to what your servant isgoing to say. I shall give you the facts about these mountain folk whose home lies close to you. You wil hear nolie from the mouth of your servant.5 Da sprach zu ihm Achior, der Anführer aller Ammoniter: "Mein Herr, höre aus dem Munde deines Knechtes ein Wort! Ich will dir die Wahrheit über dieses Volk, das in diesem Gebirgsland in deiner Nähe wohnt, berichten! Keine Lüge wird dem Mund deines Knechtes entströmen!
These people are descended from the Chaldaeans.6 Diese Leute sind Abkömmlinge der Kaldäer.
They once came to live in Mesopotamia, because they did not want to fol ow the gods of their ancestorswho lived in Chaldaea.7 Sie hatten sich zuerst in Mesopotamien angesiedelt, weil sie nicht den Göttern ihrer Väter im Kaldäerland folgen wollten.
They abandoned the way of their ancestors to worship the God of heaven, the God they learnt toacknowledge. Banished from the presence of their own gods, they fled to Mesopotamia where they lived for along time.8 Sie wichen vom Weg ihrer Vorfahren ab und beteten den Gott des Himmels an, den Gott, den sie als richtig erkannt hatten; da vertrieb man sie aus dem Bereich jener Götter.
When God told them to leave their home and set out for Canaan, they settled there and accumulatedgold and silver and great herds of cattle.9 Da befahl ihnen ihr Gott, ihren Wohnsitz zu verlassen und nach dem Lande Kanaan zu ziehen.
Next, famine having overwhelmed the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt where they stayed tilthey were well nourished. There they became a great multitude, a race beyond counting.10 Dann zogen sie nach Ägypten hinab; denn eine Hungersnot bedrückte das kanaanäische Land.
But the king of Egypt turned against them and exploited them by forcing them to make bricks; hedegraded them, reducing them to slavery.11 Der König von Ägypten erhob sich wider sie und unterdrückte sie hinterlistig durch Ziegelarbeiten, unterjochte sie und machte sie zu Sklaven.
They cried to their God, who struck the entire land of Egypt with incurable plagues, and the Egyptiansexpel ed them.12 Da schrieen sie zu ihrem Gott, und er schlug das ganze Ägypterland mit unheilbaren Plagen.
God dried up the Red Sea before them13 Gott trocknete vor ihnen das Rote Meer aus.
and led them forward by way of Sinai and Kadesh-Barnea.
they settled in the land of the Amorites and in their strength exterminated the entire population ofHeshbon.
driving out the Canaanites before them and the Perizzites, Jebusites, Shechemites and all theGirgashites, and lived there for many years.16 Sie vertrieben die Kanaaniter, die Perissiter, die Jebusiter, die Sichemiter und alle Girgasiter und wohnten lange Zeit dortselbst.
Al the while they did not sin before their God, prosperity was theirs, for they have a God who hateswickedness.17 Solange sie nicht vor ihrem Gott sündigten, war das Glück ihnen zur Seite; denn ein Gott, der Unrecht haßt, steht ihnen bei.
But when they turned from the path he had marked out for them some were exterminated in a series ofbattles, others were taken captive to a foreign land.
Then having turned once again to their God, they came back from the places to which they had beendispersed and scattered, regained possession of Jerusalem, where they have their Temple, and reoccupied thehil -country which had been left deserted.19 Jetzt aber wandten sie sich ihrem Gott wieder zu und sind aus der Zerstreuung, wohin sie versprengt waren, heimgekehrt.
So, now, master and lord, if this people has committed any fault, if they have sinned against their God,let us first be sure that they real y have this reason to fail, then advance and attack them.20 Nun aber, Herr und Gebieter, falls auf diesem Volk eine Schuld lastet, und falls es sündigt wider den Herrn, seinen Gott, dann wollen wir feststellen, daß dieser gefährliche Zustand wirklich bei ihnen vorliegt, und können ruhig hinaufziehen und sie besiegen.
But if their nation is guiltless, my lord would do better to abstain, for fear that their Lord and God shouldprotect them. We should then become the laughing-stock of the whole world.'21 Wenn aber in ihrem Volk kein Vergehen zu entdecken ist, dann nehme doch mein Gebieter davon Abstand; denn sonst hält der Herr, ihr Gott, den Schild über sie, und wir werden zum Gespött vor aller Welt."
When Achior had ended this speech, all the people crowding round the tent began protesting.Holofernes' own senior officers, as wel as al the coastal peoples and the Moabites, threatened to tear him limbfrom limb.22 Als Achior diese Rede beendet hatte, murrten die Kriegsleute, die rings um das Zelt standen.
'Why should we be afraid of the Israelites? They are a weak and powerless people, quite unable tostand a stiff attack.23 Sie riefen: "Wir fürchten uns doch nicht vor den Israeliten; denn es handelt sich um Leute, die weder Macht noch Kraft zu einer festen Kriegführung haben!
Forward! Advance! Your army, Holofernes our master, wil swal ow them in one mouthful!'24 Deshalb auf zum Kampf!
