NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Holofernes, general-in-chief of the Assyrian army, received the intel igence that the Israelites werepreparing for war, that they had closed the mountain passes, fortified al the high peaks and laid obstructions inthe plains.	1 Holofernes, marechal do exército assírio, foi avisado de que os israelitas se dispunham à resistência e que haviam bloqueado as passagens dos montes.
2 Holofernes was furious. He summoned al the princes of Moab, al the generals of Ammon and al thesatraps of the coastal regions.	2 Explodiu então a sua cólera, e, cheio de furor, convocou os príncipes de Moab e os generais dos amonitas e disse-lhes:
3 'Men of Canaan,' he said, 'tel me: what people is this that occupies the hill-country? What towns does itinhabit? How large is its army? What are the sources of its power and strength? Who is the king who rules it andcommands its army?	3 Dizei-me quem é esse povo que ocupa as montanhas; quais as suas cidades, a sua força, o seu número; qual o poder e o efetivo de seu exército, quem é o seu chefe,
4 Why have they disdained to wait on me, as all the western peoples have?'	4 e por que motivo foi ele o único dentre todos os povos do oriente que nos desprezou, recusando-se a sair ao nosso encontro para receber-nos pacificamente.
5 Achior, leader of al the Ammonites, replied, 'May my lord be pleased to listen to what your servant isgoing to say. I shall give you the facts about these mountain folk whose home lies close to you. You wil hear nolie from the mouth of your servant.	5 Aquior, chefe dos amonitas, respondeu-lhe: Meu senhor, se te dignas ouvir-me, dir-te-ei a verdade acerca desse povo que habita nos montes, e nenhuma mentira sairá de minha boca.
6 These people are descended from the Chaldaeans.	6 Esse povo é da raça dos caldeus;
7 They once came to live in Mesopotamia, because they did not want to fol ow the gods of their ancestorswho lived in Chaldaea.	7 habitaram primeiramente na Mesopotâmia, porque recusavam seguir os deuses de seus pais que estavam na Caldéia.
8 They abandoned the way of their ancestors to worship the God of heaven, the God they learnt toacknowledge. Banished from the presence of their own gods, they fled to Mesopotamia where they lived for along time.	8 Abandonaram os ritos de seus ancestrais que honravam múltiplas divindades,
9 When God told them to leave their home and set out for Canaan, they settled there and accumulatedgold and silver and great herds of cattle.	9 e passaram a adorar o Deus único do céu, o qual lhes ordenou que saíssem daquele país e fossem estabelecer-se na terra de Canaã. Depois disso sobreveio a toda a terra uma grande fome, e desceram ao Egito onde, durante quatrocentos anos, multiplicaram-se de tal forma que se tornaram uma multidão inumerável.
10 Next, famine having overwhelmed the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt where they stayed tilthey were well nourished. There they became a great multitude, a race beyond counting.	10 Oprimidos pelo rei do Egito, e obrigados a trabalhar na fabricação de tijolos e de argamassa para a construção de suas cidades, clamaram ao seu Senhor, e este feriu toda a terra do Egito com vários flagelos.
11 But the king of Egypt turned against them and exploited them by forcing them to make bricks; hedegraded them, reducing them to slavery.	11 A praga cessou, quando os egípcios os expulsaram de sua terra; mas quiseram retomá-los para sujeitá-los de novo à escravidão.
12 They cried to their God, who struck the entire land of Egypt with incurable plagues, and the Egyptiansexpel ed them.	12 Eles fugiram. O Deus do céu abriu-lhes o mar de tal modo que as águas tornaram-se de cada lado sólidas como um muro, e eles atravessaram a pé enxuto pelo fundo do mar.
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them	13 Entretanto, vindo em sua perseguição o inumerável exército dos egípcios, foi de tal maneira envolvido pelas águas que não escapou um sequer que pudesse contar à posteridade o acontecimento.
14 and led them forward by way of Sinai and Kadesh-Barnea. Having driven off all the inhabitants of thedesert,	14 Ao sair do mar Vermelho, ocuparam os desertos do monte Sinai, onde nunca homem algum pôde habitar, nem um ser humano se fixar.
15 they settled in the land of the Amorites and in their strength exterminated the entire population ofHeshbon. Then, having crossed the Jordan, they took possession of al the hil -country,	15 Ali, tornaram-se-lhes doces e potáveis as fontes amargas, e por espaço de quarenta anos receberam um alimento vindo do céu.
16 driving out the Canaanites before them and the Perizzites, Jebusites, Shechemites and all theGirgashites, and lived there for many years.	16 Por toda parte onde entraram sem arco e sem flecha, sem escudos e sem espada, Deus combateu por eles e venceu.
17 Al the while they did not sin before their God, prosperity was theirs, for they have a God who hateswickedness.	17 Ninguém jamais pôde insultar esse povo, a não ser quando ele se afastou do culto do Senhor, seu Deus.
18 But when they turned from the path he had marked out for them some were exterminated in a series ofbattles, others were taken captive to a foreign land. The Temple of their God was rased to the ground and theirtowns were seized by their enemies.	18 Mas sempre que, ao lado de seu Deus, eles adoravam um outro, logo eram entregues à pilhagem, à espada e à vergonha.
19 Then having turned once again to their God, they came back from the places to which they had beendispersed and scattered, regained possession of Jerusalem, where they have their Temple, and reoccupied thehil -country which had been left deserted.	19 E todas as vezes que se arrependiam de ter abandonado o culto do seu Deus, o Deus do céu dava-lhes força para resistir.
20 So, now, master and lord, if this people has committed any fault, if they have sinned against their God,let us first be sure that they real y have this reason to fail, then advance and attack them.	20 Finalmente, derrotaram os reis cananeus, jebuseus, fereseus, hiteus, heveus, amorreus e todos os valentes de Hesebon, e tomaram posse de suas terras e de suas cidades.
21 But if their nation is guiltless, my lord would do better to abstain, for fear that their Lord and God shouldprotect them. We should then become the laughing-stock of the whole world.'	21 Enquanto não pecavam na presença de seu Deus, eram bem sucedidos, porque o seu Deus odeia a iniqüidade.
22 When Achior had ended this speech, all the people crowding round the tent began protesting.Holofernes' own senior officers, as wel as al the coastal peoples and the Moabites, threatened to tear him limbfrom limb.	22 Há alguns anos, com efeito, tendo-se afastado da via em que Deus lhes ordenara caminhar, foram derrotados nos combates contra várias nações, e muitos dentre eles levados para o cativeiro.
23 'Why should we be afraid of the Israelites? They are a weak and powerless people, quite unable tostand a stiff attack.	23 Mas converteram-se de novo ao Senhor, seu Deus, e depois dessa dispersão acham-se reunidos desde há pouco: retomaram a posse de suas montanhas e de Jerusalém onde está seu santuário.
24 Forward! Advance! Your army, Holofernes our master, wil swal ow them in one mouthful!'	24 Agora, pois, meu senhor, informa-te se esse povo cometeu alguma iniqüidade na presença de seu Deus, e então subamos e o ataquemos, porque o seu Deus os entregará nas tuas mãos, e ficarão sujeitos ao teu poder.
	25 Mas se esse povo não está manchado de nenhuma ofensa para com o seu Deus, não o poderemos enfrentar, porque o seu Deus o defenderá e seremos o opróbrio de toda a terra.
	26 Calando-se Aquior, todos os grandes de Holofernes se indignaram e queriam matá-lo.
	27 E diziam entre si: Quem é esse homem que pretende que os israelitas possam resistir ao rei Nabucodonosor e ao seu exército, sendo eles homens sem armas, sem força e ignorantes da estratégia?
	28 Para mostrarmos a Aquior que ele nos engana, vamos às montanhas, e, quando tivermos capturado seus príncipes, passá-lo-emos com eles ao fio da espada.
	29 É preciso que toda a nação saiba que Nabucodonosor é o deus da terra, e que não há outro fora dele.
