NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Holofernes, general-in-chief of the Assyrian army, received the intel igence that the Israelites werepreparing for war, that they had closed the mountain passes, fortified al the high peaks and laid obstructions inthe plains.	1 - Fu dunque narrato ad Oloferne capo dell'esercito assiro, come i figli d'Israele si fossero preparati alla resistenza, ed avessero sbarrato i passi dei monti.
2 Holofernes was furious. He summoned al the princes of Moab, al the generals of Ammon and al thesatraps of the coastal regions.	2 Allora, entrato in gran furore ed in ira grandissima, chiamò tutt'i principi de' Moabiti ed i capi degli Ammoniti,
3 'Men of Canaan,' he said, 'tel me: what people is this that occupies the hill-country? What towns does itinhabit? How large is its army? What are the sources of its power and strength? Who is the king who rules it andcommands its army?	3 e disse loro: « Ditemi che popolo è questo che ha occupato i passi montani; quali e quante sono le loro città; quale è il loro valore, quale il loro numero, e chi è il capo delle loro milizie;
4 Why have they disdained to wait on me, as all the western peoples have?'	4 e perchè, a differenza di tutti quelli che abitano ad oriente, questi ci hanno disprezzato, e non son venuti incontro a noi per riceverci pacificamente ».
5 Achior, leader of al the Ammonites, replied, 'May my lord be pleased to listen to what your servant isgoing to say. I shall give you the facts about these mountain folk whose home lies close to you. You wil hear nolie from the mouth of your servant.	5 Allora Achior, capo di tutti gli Ammoniti, rispose, e disse: « Se ti degnerai d'ascoltarmi, signor mio, io dirò innanzi a te la verità a riguardo di questo popolo che abita sui monti, e non uscirà parola falsa dalla mia bocca.
6 These people are descended from the Chaldaeans.	6 Questo popolo è della razza de' Caldei.
7 They once came to live in Mesopotamia, because they did not want to fol ow the gods of their ancestorswho lived in Chaldaea.	7 Esso abitò prima nella Mesopotamia, perchè non volcvnn seguire gli dèi de' padri loro, della terra de' Caldei.
8 They abandoned the way of their ancestors to worship the God of heaven, the God they learnt toacknowledge. Banished from the presence of their own gods, they fled to Mesopotamia where they lived for along time.	8 Abbandonando dunque il culto de' loro padri che adoravano una moltitudine di dèi,
9 When God told them to leave their home and set out for Canaan, they settled there and accumulatedgold and silver and great herds of cattle.	9 servirono al solo Dio del cielo. Questi comandò loro d'uscire di li, e d'abitare in Caran. Avendo poi la fame Invasa tutta la terra, vennero in Egitto, ed ivi in capo a quattrocent'anni si moltiplicaron talmente da formare un esercito innumerevole.
10 Next, famine having overwhelmed the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt where they stayed tilthey were well nourished. There they became a great multitude, a race beyond counting.	10 Ma avendoli il re d'Egitto angariati, e costretti a fabbricare con terra e mattoni le sue città, levaron le grida al Signore, il quale con più e diverse piaghe percosse tutto l'Egitto,
11 But the king of Egypt turned against them and exploited them by forcing them to make bricks; hedegraded them, reducing them to slavery.	11 Allora gli Egiziani li fecero andar via. Ma cessati i loro flagelli, volendo essi riprenderli, e riassoggettarli alla loro schiavitù,
12 They cried to their God, who struck the entire land of Egypt with incurable plagues, and the Egyptiansexpel ed them.	12 fuggendo quelli, il Dio del cielo aprì il mare in modo che di qua e dì là le acque si fermarono come un muro, e quelli a piede asciutto camminando sul fondo del mare l'attraversarono.
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them	13 Nello stesso luogo, un esercito innumerevole d'egiziani che li inseguiva, fu travolto dalle acque in guisa che non ne scampò neppure uno per raccontare a' posteri il fatto.
14 and led them forward by way of Sinai and Kadesh-Barnea. Having driven off all the inhabitants of thedesert,	14 Usciti poi dal Mar Rosso, occuparono i deserti del monte Sinai, dove mai potè abitare un uomo, nè un flgliuol d'uomo fermarsi.
15 they settled in the land of the Amorites and in their strength exterminated the entire population ofHeshbon. Then, having crossed the Jordan, they took possession of al the hil -country,	15 Ivi, delle fonti amare furon rese dolci a beversl, e per quarant' anni quelli riceverono l'alimento dal cielo.
16 driving out the Canaanites before them and the Perizzites, Jebusites, Shechemites and all theGirgashites, and lived there for many years.	16 Dovunque si avanzavano, senz'archi e saette, senza scudi e spade, il Dio loro combattè per loro, e vinse.
17 Al the while they did not sin before their God, prosperity was theirs, for they have a God who hateswickedness.	17 Nè vi fu chi potesse far male a quel popolo, altro che quando si sviava dal culto del Signore Dio suo.
18 But when they turned from the path he had marked out for them some were exterminated in a series ofbattles, others were taken captive to a foreign land. The Temple of their God was rased to the ground and theirtowns were seized by their enemies.	18 Giacché, ogni qual volta invece del loro Dio ne adorarono un altro furon lasciati alla preda, alla spada, all'obbrobrio.
19 Then having turned once again to their God, they came back from the places to which they had beendispersed and scattered, regained possession of Jerusalem, where they have their Temple, and reoccupied thehil -country which had been left deserted.	19 Ed ogni qual volta si pentirono d'aver abbandonato il culto del loro Dio, il Dio del cielo dette loro la forza di resistere.
20 So, now, master and lord, if this people has committed any fault, if they have sinned against their God,let us first be sure that they real y have this reason to fail, then advance and attack them.	20 Infine abbatterono il re Cananeo, il Jebuseo, il Ferezeo, l'Eteo, l'Amorreo, e tutti 1 re potenti di Esebon, e ne conquistarono 1 territori e le città.
21 But if their nation is guiltless, my lord would do better to abstain, for fear that their Lord and God shouldprotect them. We should then become the laughing-stock of the whole world.'	21 E fintanto che non peccavano al cospetto del loro Dio, avevano ogni bene; perchè il loro Dio odia l'iniquità.
22 When Achior had ended this speech, all the people crowding round the tent began protesting.Holofernes' own senior officers, as wel as al the coastal peoples and the Moabites, threatened to tear him limbfrom limb.	22 Anche in questi ultimi anni, essendosi allontanati dalla via che Dio aveva segnato loro per camminarvi, furon sconfitti in guerra da molte nazioni, e molti di loro furon condotti prigionieri in terra straniera.
23 'Why should we be afraid of the Israelites? They are a weak and powerless people, quite unable tostand a stiff attack.	23 Ultimamente poi, ritornati al Signore Dio loro dall'esilio nel quale erano stati dispersi, si sono riuniti, sono saliti su tutte queste montagne, e di nuovo posseggono Gerusalemme, ove sono i loro santuarii.
24 Forward! Advance! Your army, Holofernes our master, wil swal ow them in one mouthful!'	24 Ora dunque, signor mio, informati. Se si trovano avere al cospetto del loro Dio qualche colpa, attacchiamoli pure; perchè il loro Dio te li darà in mano, e resteranno abbattuti sotto il giogo della tua potenza.
	25 Ma se questo popolo non è reo dinanzi al suo Dio, non potremo resistere contro di loro; perchè il loro Dio li difenderà, e noi diventeremo il ludibrio di tutta la terra ».
	26 Or dunque, cessato che ebbe Achlor di parlare così, tutt' i capi dell'esercito d'Oloferne si sdegnarono, e pensavano d'ucciderlo, dicendosi uno all'altro:
	27 « Chi è costui il quale osa dire che i figli d'Israele, gente senz'armi, senza valore e senza perizia nell'arte della guerra, possan resistere al re Nabucodonosor ed a' suoi eserciti?
	28 Acciò dunque Achior conosca a prova d'averci ingannati, diamo l'assalto a que' monti; quando avrem fatti prigionieri i più forti di loro, egli insieme con essi sarà trafitto di spada,
	29 affinchè tutti i popoli sappiano che Nabucodonosor è il dio della terra, e non ve n' è altri fuori di lui ».
