NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Holofernes, general-in-chief of the Assyrian army, received the intel igence that the Israelites werepreparing for war, that they had closed the mountain passes, fortified al the high peaks and laid obstructions inthe plains.	1 Cuando informaron a Holofernes, general en jefe del ejército de Asiria, que los israelitas se habían preparado para la guerra, y habían bloqueado los desfiladeros de la montaña, fortificando todas las cimas de las altas montañas y levantando parapetos en las llanuras,
2 Holofernes was furious. He summoned al the princes of Moab, al the generals of Ammon and al thesatraps of the coastal regions.	2 se enfureció y convocó a todos los príncipes de Moab, a los jefes de Amón y a todos los sátrapas del litoral.
3 'Men of Canaan,' he said, 'tel me: what people is this that occupies the hill-country? What towns does itinhabit? How large is its army? What are the sources of its power and strength? Who is the king who rules it andcommands its army?	3 El les preguntó: «Díganme, cananeos, ¿Qué pueblo es ese que vive en la montaña? ¿Cuáles son las ciudades que habita y los efectivos de su ejército? ¿De dónde proceden su vigor y su fuerza, y quién es el rey que los gobierna y dirige sus ejércitos?
4 Why have they disdained to wait on me, as all the western peoples have?'	4 ¿Por qué ellos solos, a diferencia de todos los habitantes de Occidente, se han negado a venir a mi encuentro?».
5 Achior, leader of al the Ammonites, replied, 'May my lord be pleased to listen to what your servant isgoing to say. I shall give you the facts about these mountain folk whose home lies close to you. You wil hear nolie from the mouth of your servant.	5 Ajior, jefe de todos los amonitas le respondió: «Si me escuchas un momento, te haré conocer la verdad acerca de este pueblo que habita en las montañas contiguas a las que tú ocupas; y nada de lo que yo te diga será falso.
6 These people are descended from the Chaldaeans.	6 La gente de este pueblo desciende de los caldeos.
7 They once came to live in Mesopotamia, because they did not want to fol ow the gods of their ancestorswho lived in Chaldaea.	7 Primero emigraron a Mesopotamia, porque no quisieron seguir a los dioses de sus padres, establecidos en la tierra de los caldeos.
8 They abandoned the way of their ancestors to worship the God of heaven, the God they learnt toacknowledge. Banished from the presence of their own gods, they fled to Mesopotamia where they lived for along time.	8 Ellos abandonaron el camino de sus padres y adoraron al Dios del cielo, al que habían reconocido como Dios. Entonces fueron expulsados de la presencia de sus dioses y se refugiaron en Mesopotamia, donde habitaron mucho tiempo.
9 When God told them to leave their home and set out for Canaan, they settled there and accumulatedgold and silver and great herds of cattle.	9 Pero luego su Dios les ordenó salir de ese lugar y dirigirse al país de Canaán. Allí se instalaron y se enriquecieron con oro, plata y numerosos rebaños.
10 Next, famine having overwhelmed the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt where they stayed tilthey were well nourished. There they became a great multitude, a race beyond counting.	10 Después bajaron a Egipto, porque el hambre azotaba el país de Canaán, y permanecieron allí mientras tuvieron qué comer. En Egipto se multiplicaron de tal manera, que su descendencia se hizo innumerable.
11 But the king of Egypt turned against them and exploited them by forcing them to make bricks; hedegraded them, reducing them to slavery.	11 El rey de Egipto se levantó contra ellos y los oprimió astutamente obligándolos a fabricar ladrillos: así los humillaron y los redujeron a esclavitud.
12 They cried to their God, who struck the entire land of Egypt with incurable plagues, and the Egyptiansexpel ed them.	12 Ellos, por su parte, clamaron a su Dios, y él castigó al país de Egipto con plagas irremediables; por eso los egipcios los expulsaron.
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them	13 Dios secó el Mar Rojo delante de ellos
14 and led them forward by way of Sinai and Kadesh-Barnea. Having driven off all the inhabitants of thedesert,	14 y los condujo por el camino del Sinaí y de Cades Barné. Ellos desalojaron a todos los habitantes del desierto
15 they settled in the land of the Amorites and in their strength exterminated the entire population ofHeshbon. Then, having crossed the Jordan, they took possession of al the hil -country,	15 y se establecieron luego en el país de los amorreos, exterminando por la fuerza a los jesbonitas. Después cruzaron el Jordán y tomaron posesión de toda la región montañosa,
16 driving out the Canaanites before them and the Perizzites, Jebusites, Shechemites and all theGirgashites, and lived there for many years.	16 desalojando a su paso a los Cananeos, a los Perizitas, a los Jebuseos, a los Siquemitas y a todos los Guirgasitas. Allí permanecieron mucho tiempo.
17 Al the while they did not sin before their God, prosperity was theirs, for they have a God who hateswickedness.	17 Mientras no pecaron delante de su Dios, gozaron de prosperidad, porque un Dios que odia la injusticia está con ellos.
18 But when they turned from the path he had marked out for them some were exterminated in a series ofbattles, others were taken captive to a foreign land. The Temple of their God was rased to the ground and theirtowns were seized by their enemies.	18 Pero, cuando se desviaron del camino que les había señalado, fueron completamente exterminados en numerosos combates y deportados a una tierra extranjera: el Templo de su Dios fue arrasado hasta sus cimientos, y sus ciudades cayeron en poder de sus adversarios.
19 Then having turned once again to their God, they came back from the places to which they had beendispersed and scattered, regained possession of Jerusalem, where they have their Temple, and reoccupied thehil -country which had been left deserted.	19 Pero ahora que se convirtieron a su Dios, volvieron de las regiones donde estaban dispersos, ocuparon Jerusalén, donde se encuentra su Santuario, y repoblaron las montañas que habían quedado desiertas.
20 So, now, master and lord, if this people has committed any fault, if they have sinned against their God,let us first be sure that they real y have this reason to fail, then advance and attack them.	20 Y ahora, soberano señor, si hay una falta en este pueblo, si pecan contra su Dios y comprobamos en ellos algún motivo de ruina, entonces sí, subamos y hagámosle la guerra.
21 But if their nation is guiltless, my lord would do better to abstain, for fear that their Lord and God shouldprotect them. We should then become the laughing-stock of the whole world.'	21 Pero si no hay ninguna transgresión en esta gente, que mi señor pase de largo, no sea que su Señor y su Dios los proteja y seamos la burla de toda la tierra.
22 When Achior had ended this speech, all the people crowding round the tent began protesting.Holofernes' own senior officers, as wel as al the coastal peoples and the Moabites, threatened to tear him limbfrom limb.	22 Apenas Ajior terminó de pronunciar estas palabras, toda la multitud que estaba alrededor de la tienda de campaña hizo oír un murmullo de protesta. Los oficiales de Holofernes, y todos los habitantes del litoral y de Moab, querían hacerlo pedazos.
23 'Why should we be afraid of the Israelites? They are a weak and powerless people, quite unable tostand a stiff attack.	23 «No nos dejaremos amedrentar por los israelitas, exclamaban, porque son gente sin fortaleza ni vigor, incapaz de oponer una tenaz resistencia.
24 Forward! Advance! Your army, Holofernes our master, wil swal ow them in one mouthful!'	24 ¡Subamos, y ellos serán un bocado para todo tu ejército, Holofernes, señor nuestro!
