NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Holofernes, general-in-chief of the Assyrian army, received the intel igence that the Israelites werepreparing for war, that they had closed the mountain passes, fortified al the high peaks and laid obstructions inthe plains.	1 Intanto fu riferito a Oloferne, comandante in capo dell'esercito assiro, che gl'Israeliti si preparavano alla guerra e che avevano sbarrato i passi montani, fortificato tutte le sommità degli alti monti e posto barriere nelle pianure.
2 Holofernes was furious. He summoned al the princes of Moab, al the generals of Ammon and al thesatraps of the coastal regions.	2 Allora, montato in gran furore, egli convocò tutti i capi di Moab, i generali di Ammon e tutti i satrapi del litorale,
3 'Men of Canaan,' he said, 'tel me: what people is this that occupies the hill-country? What towns does itinhabit? How large is its army? What are the sources of its power and strength? Who is the king who rules it andcommands its army?	3 e disse loro: "Spiegatemi un po', o uomini di Canaan, chi è questo popolo che risiede nella regione montuosa? Quali sono le città che abita? Qual è l'importanza del suo esercito? Dove risiede la loro potenza e la loro forza? Chi si è messo alla loro testa come re e comanda il loro esercito?
4 Why have they disdained to wait on me, as all the western peoples have?'	4 Perché, a differenza di tutti gli abitanti dell'Occidente, essi hanno rifiutato di venirmi incontro?".
5 Achior, leader of al the Ammonites, replied, 'May my lord be pleased to listen to what your servant isgoing to say. I shall give you the facts about these mountain folk whose home lies close to you. You wil hear nolie from the mouth of your servant.	5 Allora Achior, capo di tutti gli Ammoniti, gli rispose: "Ascolti, ti prego, il mio signore una parola dalla bocca del tuo servo; io ti riferirò la verità a proposito di questo popolo che abita questa regione montuosa, vicino al luogo dove risiedi; non uscirà menzogna dalla bocca del tuo servo.
6 These people are descended from the Chaldaeans.	6 Questo popolo discende dai Caldei;
7 They once came to live in Mesopotamia, because they did not want to fol ow the gods of their ancestorswho lived in Chaldaea.	7 dapprima andarono ad abitare nella Mesopotamia, perché non vollero seguire gli dèi dei loro padri che si trovavano nel paese dei Caldei.
8 They abandoned the way of their ancestors to worship the God of heaven, the God they learnt toacknowledge. Banished from the presence of their own gods, they fled to Mesopotamia where they lived for along time.	8 Abbandonata la religione dei loro padri, adorarono il Dio del cielo, il Dio che essi avevano riconosciuto. Cacciati dal cospetto dei loro dèi, essi si rifugiarono nella Mesopotamia, dove soggiornarono per lungo tempo.
9 When God told them to leave their home and set out for Canaan, they settled there and accumulatedgold and silver and great herds of cattle.	9 Ma il loro Dio comandò loro di uscire da quella dimora e di recarsi nel paese di Canaan. Qui si stabilirono e si arricchirono di oro, di argento e di moltissimo bestiame.
10 Next, famine having overwhelmed the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt where they stayed tilthey were well nourished. There they became a great multitude, a race beyond counting.	10 Poi discesero in Egitto, perché la fame s'era estesa a tutto il paese di Canaan, e ivi dimorarono, finché ebbero di che nutrirsi. Là divennero pure una grande moltitudine e la loro stirpe era innumerevole.
11 But the king of Egypt turned against them and exploited them by forcing them to make bricks; hedegraded them, reducing them to slavery.	11 Ma il re d'Egitto si levò contro di loro e li sfruttò, costringendoli a fabbricare mattoni. Li umiliarono e li resero schiavi.
12 They cried to their God, who struck the entire land of Egypt with incurable plagues, and the Egyptiansexpel ed them.	12 Essi gridarono al loro Dio, che percosse tutto il paese d'Egitto con piaghe alle quali non c'era rimedio; perciò gli Egiziani li cacciarono dal loro cospetto.
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them	13 Davanti a loro Dio prosciugò il Mar Rosso
14 and led them forward by way of Sinai and Kadesh-Barnea. Having driven off all the inhabitants of thedesert,	14 e li diresse per il cammino del Sinai e di Cadesbarne; poi, cacciati tutti gli abitanti del deserto,
15 they settled in the land of the Amorites and in their strength exterminated the entire population ofHeshbon. Then, having crossed the Jordan, they took possession of al the hil -country,	15 si stabilirono nel territorio degli Amorrei e con la loro potenza sterminarono tutti gli abitanti di Esebon; quindi passarono il Giordano e s'impossessarono di tutta la regione montuosa,
16 driving out the Canaanites before them and the Perizzites, Jebusites, Shechemites and all theGirgashites, and lived there for many years.	16 scacciando davanti a loro il Cananeo, il Perizzita, il Gebuseo, il Sichemita e tutti i Gergesei, e abitarono ivi per molto tempo.
17 Al the while they did not sin before their God, prosperity was theirs, for they have a God who hateswickedness.	17 Difatti, finché non peccarono contro il loro Dio, godettero prosperità, perché hanno con loro un Dio che odia l'iniquità.
18 But when they turned from the path he had marked out for them some were exterminated in a series ofbattles, others were taken captive to a foreign land. The Temple of their God was rased to the ground and theirtowns were seized by their enemies.	18 Invece quando si allontanarono dalla via che aveva loro assegnato, soffrirono tremende distruzioni nelle loro guerre, furono condotti prigionieri in terra straniera, il tempio del loro Dio fu raso al suolo e le loro città furono conquistate dagli avversari.
19 Then having turned once again to their God, they came back from the places to which they had beendispersed and scattered, regained possession of Jerusalem, where they have their Temple, and reoccupied thehil -country which had been left deserted.	19 Ma ora, essendosi convertiti al loro Dio, hanno fatto ritorno dai luoghi dov'erano stati dispersi, hanno rioccupato Gerusalemme dove si trova il loro santuario e si sono ristabiliti nella regione montuosa, che era deserta.
20 So, now, master and lord, if this people has committed any fault, if they have sinned against their God,let us first be sure that they real y have this reason to fail, then advance and attack them.	20 Ed ora, sovrano signore, se in questo popolo ci fosse qualche colpa per aver essi peccato contro il loro Dio, accertiamoci se c'è tra loro questo scandalo, e poi avanziamo e attacchiamoli;
21 But if their nation is guiltless, my lord would do better to abstain, for fear that their Lord and God shouldprotect them. We should then become the laughing-stock of the whole world.'	21 ma se tra la loro gente non c'è nessuna trasgressione, il mio signore passi oltre, affinché non avvenga che il loro Signore e il loro Dio si faccia scudo sopra di loro e noi diventiamo oggetto di scherno al cospetto di tutta la terra".
22 When Achior had ended this speech, all the people crowding round the tent began protesting.Holofernes' own senior officers, as wel as al the coastal peoples and the Moabites, threatened to tear him limbfrom limb.	22 Quando Achior finì di dire queste parole, tutta la gente che circondava la tenda e stava dintorno si mise a mormorare e gli ufficiali di Oloferne e tutti gli abitanti del litorale e di Moab proponevano di farlo a pezzi.
23 'Why should we be afraid of the Israelites? They are a weak and powerless people, quite unable tostand a stiff attack.	23 "Non dobbiamo aver paura degl'Israeliti; è un popolo, infatti, che non possiede né esercito né forza per un valido schieramento.
24 Forward! Advance! Your army, Holofernes our master, wil swal ow them in one mouthful!'	24 Perciò avanziamo ed essi saranno un facile boccone per tutto il tuo esercito, o sovrano Oloferne".
