1 Holofernes, general-in-chief of the Assyrian army, received the intel igence that the Israelites werepreparing for war, that they had closed the mountain passes, fortified al the high peaks and laid obstructions inthe plains.	1 E fu riferito ad Oloferne capitano dell'esercito degli Assiri, come i figliuoli d'Israele si preparavano a far difesa, e come avean chiusi i passi delle montagne:
2 Holofernes was furious. He summoned al the princes of Moab, al the generals of Ammon and al thesatraps of the coastal regions.	2 E arse di sdegno, e di furore, e chiamò a se tutti i principi di Moab, e i capi degli Ammoniti,
3 'Men of Canaan,' he said, 'tel me: what people is this that occupies the hill-country? What towns does itinhabit? How large is its army? What are the sources of its power and strength? Who is the king who rules it andcommands its army?	3 E disse loro: Ditemi qual popolo sia questo, che a asserragliate le montagne, e quali, e come grandi sieno le loro città: e anche qualsiasi il loro valore, e se sieno in gran numero, e chi governi le loro milizie:
4 Why have they disdained to wait on me, as all the western peoples have?'	4 E per qual motivo tra tutti quelli che abitano verso l'oriente, costoro non hanno fatto conto di noi, e non ci sono venuti ad incontrare per accoglierci come amici?
5 Achior, leader of al the Ammonites, replied, 'May my lord be pleased to listen to what your servant isgoing to say. I shall give you the facts about these mountain folk whose home lies close to you. You wil hear nolie from the mouth of your servant.	5 Allora Achior capo di tutti i figliuoli di Ammon riespose, e disse: Se tu ti degnerai di ascoltarmi, io dirò, signore mio, la verità dinanzi a te riguardo a questo popolo, che abita nelle montagne, e non uscirà dalla mia bocca parola di falsità.
6 These people are descended from the Chaldaeans.	6 Questo popolo è di stirpe Caldea:
7 They once came to live in Mesopotamia, because they did not want to fol ow the gods of their ancestorswho lived in Chaldaea.	7 Egli abitò dapprima nella Mesopotamia, perchè non vollero seguire gli dei de padri loro, i quali dimoravano nella terra de' Caldei.
8 They abandoned the way of their ancestors to worship the God of heaven, the God they learnt toacknowledge. Banished from the presence of their own gods, they fled to Mesopotamia where they lived for along time.	8 Or eglino, abbandonate le cerimonie de' padri loro, i quali aveano molti dei,
9 When God told them to leave their home and set out for Canaan, they settled there and accumulatedgold and silver and great herds of cattle.	9 Adorarono il solo Dio del cielo, il quale eziandio ordinò loro di partirsi di colà, e di abitare in Charan: ed essendo il paese invaso dalla fame, scesero in Egitto: e ivi nello spazio di quattro cent'anni moltiplicarono in tal guisa, che diventarono un esercito innumerabile.
10 Next, famine having overwhelmed the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt where they stayed tilthey were well nourished. There they became a great multitude, a race beyond counting.	10 Ed essendo angariati dal re d'Egitto, il quale li domava nelle fabbriche delle fue città, a impastare la terra, e far de mattoni, alzaron le strida verso il loro Signore, il quale percosse con flagelli diversi tutta la terra d'Egitto.
11 But the king of Egypt turned against them and exploited them by forcing them to make bricks; hedegraded them, reducing them to slavery.	11 E avendoli gli Egiziani discacciati da se, ed essendo cessati i flagelli e volendo di nuovo riprendergli, e ridurli di nuovo sotto il loro giogo,
12 They cried to their God, who struck the entire land of Egypt with incurable plagues, and the Egyptiansexpel ed them.	12 Fuggendo questi, il Dio del cielo aperse ad essi il mare, talmente che da un lato, e dall'altro si rappreser le acque come muraglia, e questi a piè asciutto passarono per mezzo al fondo del mare.
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them	13 E inseguendoli per la stessa via un esercito innumerabile di Egiziani, fu talmente ricoperto dalle acque, che neppur uno rimase, che raccontasse ai posteri l'avvenimento.
14 and led them forward by way of Sinai and Kadesh-Barnea. Having driven off all the inhabitants of thedesert,	14 E quegli usciti dal mare Rosso occuparono i deferti del monte Sina, dove uomo non potè mai abitare, ne figliuolo d'uomo posarsi.
15 they settled in the land of the Amorites and in their strength exterminated the entire population ofHeshbon. Then, having crossed the Jordan, they took possession of al the hil -country,	15 Ivi le amare fontane divenner dolci per essi perchè avessero da bere; e per quarant'anni ebbero il vitto dal cielo.
16 driving out the Canaanites before them and the Perizzites, Jebusites, Shechemites and all theGirgashites, and lived there for many years.	16 Dovunque posero il piede senz'arco, nè freccia, e senza scudo, nè spada, il loro Dio per essi pugnò, e vinse.
17 Al the while they did not sin before their God, prosperity was theirs, for they have a God who hateswickedness.	17 E non v'ebbe chi potesse far male a questo popolo, se non quand'egli abbandonò il culto del Signore Dio suo.
18 But when they turned from the path he had marked out for them some were exterminated in a series ofbattles, others were taken captive to a foreign land. The Temple of their God was rased to the ground and theirtowns were seized by their enemies.	18 Ma tutte le volte, che altro Dio onorarono fuori del loro Dio, furono abbandonati alle rapine, e alle uccisioni, e alle ignominie.
19 Then having turned once again to their God, they came back from the places to which they had beendispersed and scattered, regained possession of Jerusalem, where they have their Temple, and reoccupied thehil -country which had been left deserted.	19 E ogni volta che fecero penitenza per avere tralasciato il culto del loro Dio, diede loro il Dio del cielo valore per difendersi.
20 So, now, master and lord, if this people has committed any fault, if they have sinned against their God,let us first be sure that they real y have this reason to fail, then advance and attack them.	20 E alla fine debellarono i re Cananei, e gli Jebusei, e i Ferezei, e gli Hethei, e gli Hevei, e gli Amorrhei, e tutti i potentati di Hesebon, e s'impadronirono delle loro terre, e delle loro città:
21 But if their nation is guiltless, my lord would do better to abstain, for fear that their Lord and God shouldprotect them. We should then become the laughing-stock of the whole world.'	21 E sino a tanto che non peccarono nel cospetto del loro Dio, ebbero felicità; perrocchè il loro Dio ha in odio l'iniquità.
22 When Achior had ended this speech, all the people crowding round the tent began protesting.Holofernes' own senior officers, as wel as al the coastal peoples and the Moabites, threatened to tear him limbfrom limb.	22 Conciossiache anche anni sono, perchè abbandonarono la via insegnata loro da Dio affinchè la seguitassero, furono disfatti in battaglia da molte genti, e moltissimi di essi furon menati schiavi lungi dal loro paese.
23 'Why should we be afraid of the Israelites? They are a weak and powerless people, quite unable tostand a stiff attack.	23 Ma ultimamente convertitisi al Signore Dio loro, da' luoghi, overan dispersi, son ritornati in corpo, e son venuti su tutti questi monti, e sono nuovamente padroni di Gerusalemme, dov'è il loro santuario.
24 Forward! Advance! Your army, Holofernes our master, wil swal ow them in one mouthful!'	24 Adesso adunque, signor mio procura di sapere, se eglino son rei di qualche peccato dinanzi al loro Dio; e andiam contro di essi; perocchè il loro Dio li darà nelle tue mani, e saran soggettati al giogo di tua possanza.
	25 Ma se questo popolo non ha offeso il suo Dio, noi non potremo resistergli; perchè il Dio loro li difenderà, e noi saremo lo scherno di tutta la terra.
	26 Or finito che ebbe Achior di dir tali cose, tutti i grandi dell'esercito di Oloferne sdegnati pensavan di ucciderlo, e dicevano l'uno all'altro:
	27 Chi è costui, che dice, che posson far fronte al re Nabuchodonosor, e a suoi eserciti i figliuoli d'Israele, uomini disarmati, e senza valore, e senza perizia dell'arte della guerra?
	28 Or affinchè Achior vegga com'egli c'inganna, andiam sopra que' monti, e quando avremo fatti prigionieri i più forti di quella gente, allora egli sarà trucidato insieme con essi:
	29 Affinchè sappian tutte le genti, come Nabuchodonosor è il Dio della terra, e altro non havvenne, fuori di lui.
