1 Holofernes, general-in-chief of the Assyrian army, received the intel igence that the Israelites werepreparing for war, that they had closed the mountain passes, fortified al the high peaks and laid obstructions inthe plains.	1 Essendo stato annunziato a Oloferne, capo dell'esercito degli Assiri, che i figli d'Israele si preparavano a resistere, e avevan chiusi i passi delle montagne,
2 Holofernes was furious. He summoned al the princes of Moab, al the generals of Ammon and al thesatraps of the coastal regions.	2 montò su tutte le furie, e, infiammato di grande ira, chiamò i principi di Moab, e i capi d'Ammon,
3 'Men of Canaan,' he said, 'tel me: what people is this that occupies the hill-country? What towns does itinhabit? How large is its army? What are the sources of its power and strength? Who is the king who rules it andcommands its army?	3 e disse loro: « Ditemi che popolo è questo che occupa le montagne, quali siano le loro città, e quante e di che importanza; qual sia la loro forza, il loro numero, e chi sia il capo del loro esercito,
4 Why have they disdained to wait on me, as all the western peoples have?'	4 e come mai, fra tutti i popoli d'oriente, questi ci han disprezzato e non ci sono venuti incontro per accoglierci in pace? »
5 Achior, leader of al the Ammonites, replied, 'May my lord be pleased to listen to what your servant isgoing to say. I shall give you the facts about these mountain folk whose home lies close to you. You wil hear nolie from the mouth of your servant.	5 Allora Achior, capo di tutti i tigli d'Ammon, rispose e disse: « Se tu signor mio, ti degnerai di ascoltarmi, io in tua presenza dirò la verità riguardo a questo popolo che abita le montagne, e dalla mia bocca non uscirà una parola falsa.
6 These people are descended from the Chaldaeans.	6 Questo popolo è della razza dei Caldei
7 They once came to live in Mesopotamia, because they did not want to fol ow the gods of their ancestorswho lived in Chaldaea.	7 e da principio abitò nella Mesopotamia. Ma non volendo seguire gli dèi dei loro padri, che erano nella terra dei Caldei,
8 They abandoned the way of their ancestors to worship the God of heaven, the God they learnt toacknowledge. Banished from the presence of their own gods, they fled to Mesopotamia where they lived for along time.	8 ne abbandonarono le cerimonie che rendevan culto a molti dèi,
9 When God told them to leave their home and set out for Canaan, they settled there and accumulatedgold and silver and great herds of cattle.	9 e adorarono il solo Dio del cielo, il quale ordinò loro di partire di là e di andare a stare in Caran. Quando la farne oppresse tutta la regione, scesero in Egitto, ove, nello spazio di quattrocento anni si moltiplicarono in modo che il loro esercito non poteva più numerarsi .
10 Next, famine having overwhelmed the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt where they stayed tilthey were well nourished. There they became a great multitude, a race beyond counting.	10 Or siccome il re d'Egitto li opprimeva, forzandoli a fabbricar le sue città con fango e mattoni, essi alzarono le grida al loro Signore, che percosse tutta la terra d'Egitto, con diverse piaghe.
11 But the king of Egypt turned against them and exploited them by forcing them to make bricks; hedegraded them, reducing them to slavery.	11 Cessati i flagelli, gli Egiziani, che li avevano cacciati, vollero di nuovo richiamarli a servire.
12 They cried to their God, who struck the entire land of Egypt with incurable plagues, and the Egyptiansexpel ed them.	12 Ad essi che fuggivano il Dio del cielo aperse il mare in modo che da un lato all'altro le acque divennero solide come un muro, ed essi passarono a piede asciutto, camminando sul fondo del mare;
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them	13 mentre, nello stesso luogo, l'innumerevole esercito degli Egiziani che l'inseguiva fu così coperto dalle acque da non rimanerne neppure uno per raccontare ai posteri l'accaduto,
14 and led them forward by way of Sinai and Kadesh-Barnea. Having driven off all the inhabitants of thedesert,	14 usciti dal Mare Rosso, occuparono i deserti del monte Sinai, nei quali mai potè abitare l'uomo, nè riposare il figlio dell'uomo.
15 they settled in the land of the Amorites and in their strength exterminated the entire population ofHeshbon. Then, having crossed the Jordan, they took possession of al the hil -country,	15 Ma le fontane amare divennero dolci e potabili per essi che per quarantanni ebbero il vitto dal cielo.
16 driving out the Canaanites before them and the Perizzites, Jebusites, Shechemites and all theGirgashites, and lived there for many years.	16 Dovunque entrarono, senz'arco, nè freccia, nè scudo, nè spada, il loro Dio combattè per essi e vinse;
17 Al the while they did not sin before their God, prosperity was theirs, for they have a God who hateswickedness.	17 e nessuno potè insultare questo popolo, se non quando egli s'allontanò dal culto del Signore Dio suo.
18 But when they turned from the path he had marked out for them some were exterminated in a series ofbattles, others were taken captive to a foreign land. The Temple of their God was rased to the ground and theirtowns were seized by their enemies.	18 Però, tutte le volte che adorarono altro dio oltre il loro proprio, furono abbandonati al saccheggio, alla spada, all'ignominia;
19 Then having turned once again to their God, they came back from the places to which they had beendispersed and scattered, regained possession of Jerusalem, where they have their Temple, and reoccupied thehil -country which had been left deserted.	19 ma tutte le volte che si pentirono d'avere abbandonato il culto del loro Dio, il Dio del cielo diede loro la forza di resistere.
20 So, now, master and lord, if this people has committed any fault, if they have sinned against their God,let us first be sure that they real y have this reason to fail, then advance and attack them.	20 Giunsero a debellare i re Cananei, i Gebusei, i Ferezei, gli Etei, gli Evei, gli Amorrei, e tutti i potenti d'Esebon e presero possesso delle loro terre e delle loro città.
21 But if their nation is guiltless, my lord would do better to abstain, for fear that their Lord and God shouldprotect them. We should then become the laughing-stock of the whole world.'	21 Finchè non peccavano nel cospetto del loro Dio, andava loro bene, perchè il loro Dio odia l'iniquità.
22 When Achior had ended this speech, all the people crowding round the tent began protesting.Holofernes' own senior officers, as wel as al the coastal peoples and the Moabites, threatened to tear him limbfrom limb.	22 infatti nel passato, avendo abbandonata la via data loro a seguire da Dio, furono sterminati in battaglia da molti popoli e moltissimi di essi furono menati schiavi in terra straniera;
23 'Why should we be afraid of the Israelites? They are a weak and powerless people, quite unable tostand a stiff attack.	23 ma poco fa, essendo ritornati al Signore loro Dio, si sono riuniti dopo la dispersione, e sono saliti su tutte queste montagne, e posseggono di nuovo Gerusalemme dov'è il loro santuario.
24 Forward! Advance! Your army, Holofernes our master, wil swal ow them in one mouthful!'	24 Or dunque, signor mio, procura di sapere se son rei di qualche iniquità dinanzi al loro Dio: allora assaliamoli, chè il loro Dio te li darà nelle mani, e saran soggiogati dal peso della tua forza;
	25 ma se questo popolo non ha offeso il suo Dio, non potremo resistergli, perchè il loro Dio li difenderà, e noi diventeremo lo scherno di tutta la terra ».
	26 Appena Achior ebbe finito di dire queste cose, tutti i grandi d'Oloferne, in preda alla collera, pensavano di ucciderlo, e dicevansi l'un l'altro:
	27 « Chi è costui, il quale osa dire che i figli d'Israele possono resistere al re Nabucodonosor e ai suoi eserciti, essi che sono uomini senz'armi, senza forza, senza perizia nell'arte della guerra?
	28 Or per far conoscere ad Achior quanto s'inganna, saliamo sulle montagne, e, fatti prigionieri i più forti dei loro, con essi passeremo a fìl di spada anche lui,
	29 affinchè ogni nazione sappia che Nabucodonosor è il dio della terra e non ve n'è altro fuori di lui ».
