1 Eliashib the high priest with his brother priests then set to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate; they madethe framework, hung its doors, fixed its bolts and bars and proceeded as far as the Tower of the Hundred andthe Tower of Hananel.1 Then Eliasib the high priest arose, and his brethren the priests, and they built the flock gate: they sanctified it, and set up the doors thereof, even unto the tower of a hundred cubits they sanctified it unto the tower of Hananeel.
2 The men of Jericho built next to him; Zaccur son of Imri built next to them.2 And next to him the men of Jericho built: and next to them built Zachur the son of Amri.
3 The sons of Ha-Senaah rebuilt the Fish Gate; they made the framework, hung its doors and fixed itsbolts and bars.3 But the fish gate the sons of Asnaa built: they covered it, and set up the doors thereof, and tire locks, and the bars. And next to them built Marimuth the son of Urias the son of Accus.
4 Meremoth son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, carried out repairs next to them; Meshul am son of Berechiah,son of Meshezabel, carried out repairs next to him; and Zadok son of Baana carried out repairs next to him.4 And next to him built Mosollam tile son of Barachias, the sell of Merezebel, and next to them built Sadoc the son of Baana.
5 The men of Tekoa carried out repairs next to him, though their nobles would not demean themselves tohelp their masters.5 And next to them the Thecuites built: but their great men did not put their necks to the work of their Lord.
6 Joiada son of Paseah and Meshul am son of Besodeiah repaired the gate of the New Quarter; theymade the framework, hung its doors and fixed its bolts and bars.6 And Joiada the son of Phasea, and Mosollam the son of Besodia built the old gate: they covered it and set up the doors thereof, and the locks, and the bars.
7 Next to them repairs were carried out by Melatiah of Gibeon, Jadon of Meronoth, and the men ofGibeon and Mizpah, for the sake of the governor of Transeuphrates.7 And next to them built Meltias the Gabaonite, and Jadon the Meronathite, the men of Gabaon and Maspha, for the governor that was in the country beyond the river.
8 Next to them repairs were carried out by Uzziel son of Harhaiah, a member of the metal-workers' guild,and next to him repairs were carried out by Hananiah of the perfumers' guild. These renovated the wall ofJerusalem as far as the Broad Wal .8 And next to him built Eziel the son of Araia the goldsmith: and next to him built Ananias the son of the perfumer: and they left Jerusalem unto the wall of the broad street.
9 Next to them repairs were carried out by Rephaiah son of Hur, who was head of one half of the districtof Jerusalem.9 And next to him built Raphaia the son of Hur, lord of the street of Jerusalem.
10 Next to them Jedaiah son of Harumaph carried out repairs opposite his own house; next to him repairswere carried out by Hattush son of Hashabneiah.10 And next to him Jedaia the son of Haromaph over against his own house: and next to him built Hattus the son of Hasebonia.
11 Malchijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section as far as theFurnace Tower.11 ,11Melchias the son of Herem, and Hasub the son of Phahath Moab, built half the street, and the tower of the furnaces.
12 Next to them repairs were carried out by Shal um son of Hal ohesh, head of the other half of thedistrict of Jerusalem, by him and his sons.12 And next to him built Sellum the son of Alohes, lord of half the street of Jerusalem, he and his daughters.
13 Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the Val ey Gate: they rebuilt it, hung its doors and fixedits bolts and bars; they also repaired a thousand cubits of wal up to the Dung Gate.13 And the gate of the valley Hanun built, and the inhabitants of Zanoe: they built it, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks, and the bars, and a thousand cubits in the wall unto the gate of the dunghill.
14 Malchijah son of Rechab, head of the district of Beth-ha-Cherem, repaired the Dung Gate; he rebuilt it,hung its doors and fixed its bolts and bars.14 And the gate of the dunghill Melchias the son of Rechab built, lord of the street of Bethacharam : he built it, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks, and the bars.
15 Shallum son of Col-Hozeh, head of the district of Mizpah, repaired the Fountain Gate; he rebuilt it,roofed it, hung its doors and fixed its bolts and bars. He also rebuilt the wal of the Pool of Siloah, adjoining theking's garden, as far as the steps going down from the City of David.15 And the gate of the fountain Sellum the son of Cholhoza built, lord of the street of Maspha: he built it, and covered it, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks, and the bare, and the walls of the pool of Siloe unto the king's guard, and unto the steps that go down from the city of David.
16 After him, Nehemiah son of Azbuk, head of half the district of Beth-Zur, carried out repairs from a pointopposite the Davidic Tombs to the artificial pool and the House of the Champions.16 After him built Nehemias the son of Azboc, lord of half the street of Bethsur, as far as over against the sepulchre of David, and to the pool, that was built with great labour, and to the house of the mighty.
17 After him, repairs were carried out by the Levites: Rehum son of Bani; and next to him Hashabiah,head of one half of the district of Keilah, carried out repairs for his own district.17 After him built the Levites, Rehum the son of Benni. After him built Hasebias, lord of half the street of Ceila in his own street.
18 After him, repairs were carried out by their brothers: Binnui son of Henadad, head of the other half ofthe district of Keilah.18 After him built their brethren Bavai the son of Enadad, lord of half Ceila.
19 Next to him, Ezer son of Jeshua, headman of Mizpah, repaired another section in front of the ascentto the armoury at the Angle.19 And next to him Aser the son of Josue, lord of Maspha, built another measure, over against the going up of the strong corner.
20 After him, Baruch son of Zabbai repaired another section from the Angle to the door of the house ofEliashib the high priest.20 After him in the mount Baruch the son of Zachai built another measure, from the corner to the door of the house of Eliasib the high priest.
21 After him, Meremoth son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, repaired another section from the door of Eliashib'shouse as far as the end of Eliashib's house.21 After him Merimuth the son of Urias the son of Haccus, built another measure, from the door of the house of Eliasib, to the end of the house of Eliasib.
22 And after him repairs were carried out by the priests who lived in the district.22 And after him built the priests, the men of the plains of the Jordan.
23 After them repairs were carried out by Benjamin and Hasshub, opposite their own house. After themrepairs were carried out by Azariah son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, beside his own house.23 After him built Benjamin and Hasub, over against their own house : and after him built Azarias the son of Maasias the son of Ananias over against his house.
24 After him, Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section from Azariah's house as far as the Angle atthe corner.24 After him built Bennui the son of Hanadad another measure, from the house of Azarias unto the bending, and unto the corner.
25 After him, Palal son of Uzai carried out repairs in front of the Angle and the tower projecting from theking's Upper Palace by the Court of the Guard; and after him, Pedaiah son of Parosh carried out the repairs25 Phalel, the son of Ozi, over against the bending and the tower, which lieth out from the king's high house, that is, in the court of the prison: after him Phadaia the son of Pharos.
26 to a point by the Water Gate to the east and the projecting tower.26 And the Nathinites dwelt in Ophel, as far as over against the water gate toward the east, and the tower that stood out.
27 After him, the men of Tekoa repaired another section from in front of the great projecting tower as faras the wal of Ophel.27 After him the Thecuites built another measure over against, from the great tower that standeth out unto the wall of the temple.
28 From the Horse Gate onwards repairs were carried out by the priests, each in front of his own house.28 And upward from the horse gate the priests built, every man over against his house.
29 After them repairs were carried out by Zadok son of Immer in front of his house, and after him repairswere carried out by Shemaiah son of Shechaniah, keeper of the East Gate.29 After them built Sadoc the son of Emmer over against his house. And after him built Semaia the son of Sechenias, keeper of the east gate.
30 After him Hananiah son of Shelemiah and Hanun sixth son of Zalaph repaired another section, afterwhom repairs were carried out by Meshul am son of Berechiah in front of his room.30 After him built Hanania the son of Selemia, and Hanun the sixth son of Seleph, another measure: after him built Mosollam the son of Barachias over against his treasury. After him Melcias the goldsmith's son built unto the house of the Nathinites, and of the sellers of small wares, over against the judgment gate, and unto the chamber of the corner.
31 After him Malchijah, of the metal-workers' guild, repaired as far as the Hal of the temple slaves andmerchants, in front of the Muster Gate, as far as the upper room at the corner.31 And within the chamber of the corner of the dock gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants built.
32 And between the upper room at the corner and the Sheep Gate repairs were carried out by thegoldsmiths and the merchants.
33 When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wal , he became furiously angry.
34 He ridiculed the Jews and in front of his kinsmen and the aristocracy of Samaria he exclaimed, 'Whatare these pathetic Jews doing . . . ? Are they going to give up? Or offer sacrifices? Or complete the work in aday? Can they put new life into stones taken from rubbish heaps and even charred?'
35 And beside him Tobiah of Ammon remarked, 'If a jackal were to jump on what they are building, itwould knock their stone wal down!'
36 Listen, our God, for we are despised! Make their sneers fal back on their own heads! Send them asbooty to a land of captivity!
37 Do not pardon their wickedness, may their sin never be erased before you, for they have insulted thebuilders to their face!
38 Meanwhile we were rebuilding the wal , which was soon joined up al the way round to mid-height; thepeople put their hearts into the work.
