NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
The people of the land then took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and proclaimed him king of Jerusalem insuccession to his father.1 Tulit ergo populus terræ Joachaz filium Josiæ, et constituit regem pro patre suo in Jerusalem.
Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for three months inJerusalem.2 Viginti trium annorum erat Joachaz cum regnare cœpisset, et tribus mensibus regnavit in Jerusalem.
The king of Egypt deposed him in Jerusalem and imposed a levy of a hundred talents of silver andone talent of gold on the country.3 Amovit autem eum rex Ægypti cum venisset in Jerusalem, et condemnavit terram centum talentis argenti, et talento auri.
The king of Egypt then made his brother Eliakim king of Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his nameto Jehoiakim. Carrying off his brother Jehoahaz, Necho took him to Egypt.4 Constituitque pro eo regem Eliakim fratrem ejus super Judam et Jerusalem, et vertit nomen ejus Joakim : ipsum vero Joachaz tulit secum, et abduxit in Ægyptum.
Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for eleven years inJerusalem. He did what is displeasing to Yahweh his God.5 Viginti quinque annorum erat Joakim cum regnare cœpisset, et undecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem : fecitque malum coram Domino Deo suo.
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon attacked him, loaded him with chains and took him to Babylon.6 Contra hunc ascendit Nabuchodonosor rex Chaldæorum, et vinctum catenis duxit in Babylonem.
To Babylon Nebuchadnezzar also took some of the objects belonging to the Temple of Yahweh andput them in his palace in Babylon.7 Ad quam et vasa Domini transtulit, et posuit ea in templo suo.
The rest of the history of Jehoiakim, the shameful things that he did and what happened to him inconsequence, these are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. His son Jehoiachin succeededhim.8 Reliqua autem verborum Joakim, et abominationum ejus quas operatus est, et quæ inventa sunt in eo, continentur in libro regum Juda et Israël. Regnavit autem Joachin filius ejus pro eo.
Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for three months andten days in Jerusalem. He did what is displeasing to Yahweh.9 Octo annorum erat Joachin cum regnare cœpisset, et tribus mensibus ac decem diebus regnavit in Jerusalem : fecitque malum in conspectu Domini.
At the turn of the year, King Nebuchadnezzar sent for him and had him taken to Babylon, with thevaluables belonging to the Temple of Yahweh, and made his brother Zedekiah king of Judah and Jerusalem.10 Cumque anni circulus volveretur, misit Nabuchodonosor rex, qui adduxerunt eum in Babylonem, asportatis simul pretiosissimis vasis domus Domini. Regem vero constituit Sedeciam patruum ejus super Judam et Jerusalem.
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for eleven years inJerusalem.11 Viginti et unius anni erat Sedecias cum regnare cœpisset, et undecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem :
He did what is displeasing to Yahweh his God. He did not listen humbly to the prophet Jeremiah whospoke for Yahweh.12 fecitque malum in oculis Domini Dei sui, nec erubuit faciem Jeremiæ prophetæ, loquentis ad se ex ore Domini.
Furthermore, he rebel ed against King Nebuchadnezzar who had made him swear al egiance to himby God. He became stubborn, and obstinately refused to return to Yahweh, God of Israel.13 A rege quoque Nabuchodonosor recessit, qui adjuraverat eum per Deum : et induravit cervicem suam et cor ut non reverteretur ad Dominum Deum Israël.
Furthermore, al the leaders of Judah, the priests and the people too, added infidelity to infidelity, copying al the shameful practices of the nations and defiling the Temple of Yahweh which he himself hadconsecrated in Jerusalem.14 Sed et universi principes sacerdotum et populus prævaricati sunt inique juxta universas abominationes gentium, et polluerunt domum Domini quam sanctificaverat sibi in Jerusalem.
Yahweh, God of their ancestors, continuously sent them word through his messengers because hefelt sorry for his people and his dwel ing,15 Mittebat autem Dominus Deus patrum suorum ad illos per manum nuntiorum suorum de nocte consurgens, et quotidie commonens : eo quod parceret populo et habitaculo suo.
but they ridiculed the messengers of God, they despised his words, they laughed at his prophets, until Yahweh's wrath with his people became so fierce that there was no further remedy.16 At illi subsannabant nuntios Dei, et parvipendebant sermones ejus, illudebantque prophetis, donec ascenderet furor Domini in populum ejus, et esset nulla curatio.
So against them he summoned the king of the Chaldaeans and he put their young men to the swordwithin the very building of their Temple, not sparing young man or girl, or the old and infirm; he put them al at hismercy.17 Adduxit enim super eos regem Chaldæorum, et interfecit juvenes eorum gladio in domo sanctuarii sui : non est misertus adolescentis, et virginis, et senis, nec decrepiti quidem, sed omnes tradidit in manibus ejus.
Al the things belonging to the Temple of God, whether large or smal , the treasures of the Temple ofYahweh, the treasures of the king and his officials, everything he took to Babylon.18 Universaque vasa domus Domini, tam majora quam minora, et thesauros templi, et regis, et principum, transtulit in Babylonem.
He burned down the temple of God, demolished the wal s of Jerusalem, burned al its palaces to theground and destroyed everything of value in it.19 Incenderunt hostes domum Dei, destruxeruntque murum Jerusalem : universas turres combusserunt, et quidquid pretiosum fuerat, demoliti sunt.
And those who had escaped the sword he deported to Babylon, where they were enslaved by himand his descendants until the rise of the kingdom of Persia,20 Si quis evaserat gladium, ductus in Babylonem servivit regi et filiis ejus, donec imperaret rex Persarum,
to fulfil Yahweh's prophecy through Jeremiah: Until the country has paid off its Sabbaths, it wil liefal ow for al the days of its desolation -- until the seventy years are complete.21 et compleretur sermo Domini ex ore Jeremiæ, et celebraret terra sabbata sua : cunctis enim diebus desolationis egit sabbatum usque dum complerentur septuaginta anni.
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia -- to fulfil the word of Yahweh through Jeremiah -- Yahwehroused the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to issue a proclamation and to have it publicly displayed throughout hiskingdom:22 Anno autem primo Cyri regis Persarum, ad explendum sermonem Domini quem locutus fuerat per os Jeremiæ, suscitavit Dominus spiritum Cyri regis Persarum : qui jussit prædicari in universo regno suo, etiam per scripturam, dicens :
'Cyrus king of Persia says this, "Yahweh, the God of Heaven, has given me al the kingdoms of theearth and has appointed me to build him a Temple in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among youof al his people, may his God be with him! Let him go up." '23 Hæc dicit Cyrus rex Persarum : Omnia regna terræ dedit mihi Dominus Deus cæli, et ipse præcepit mihi ut ædificarem ei domum in Jerusalem, quæ est in Judæa : quis ex vobis est in omni populo ejus ? sit Dominus Deus suus cum eo, et ascendat.
