NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
The people of the land then took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and proclaimed him king of Jerusalem insuccession to his father.1 Tulit ergo populus terrae Ioachaz filium Iosiae et con stituit regem pro patre suo in Ierusalem.
Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for three months inJerusalem.2 Viginti trium annorum erat Ioachaz, cum regnare coepisset, et tribus mensibus regnavit in Ierusalem.
The king of Egypt deposed him in Jerusalem and imposed a levy of a hundred talents of silver andone talent of gold on the country.3 Amovit autem eum rex Aegypti, cum venisset Ierusalem, et condemnavit terram centum talentis argenti et talento auri.
The king of Egypt then made his brother Eliakim king of Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his nameto Jehoiakim. Carrying off his brother Jehoahaz, Necho took him to Egypt.4 Constituitque regem pro eo Eliachim fratrem eius super Iudam et Ierusalem et vertit nomen eius Ioachim. Ipsum vero Ioachaz tulit secum et adduxit in Aegyptum.
Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for eleven years inJerusalem. He did what is displeasing to Yahweh his God.5 Viginti quinque annorum erat Ioachim, cum regnare coepisset, et undecim annis regnavit in Ierusalem; fecitque malum coram Domino Deo suo.
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon attacked him, loaded him with chains and took him to Babylon.6 Contra hunc ascendit Nabuchodonosor rex Chaldaeorum et vinctum catenis duxit in Babylonem,
To Babylon Nebuchadnezzar also took some of the objects belonging to the Temple of Yahweh andput them in his palace in Babylon.7 ad quam et ex vasis Domini transtulit et posuit ea in templo suo.
The rest of the history of Jehoiakim, the shameful things that he did and what happened to him inconsequence, these are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.
Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for three months andten days in Jerusalem. He did what is displeasing to Yahweh.9 Decem et octo annorum erat Ioachin, cum regnare coepisset, et tribus mensibus ac decem diebus regnavit in Ierusalem; fecitque malum in conspectu Domini.
At the turn of the year, King Nebuchadnezzar sent for him and had him taken to Babylon, with thevaluables belonging to the Temple of Yahweh, and made his brother Zedekiah king of Judah and Jerusalem.10 Cumque anni circulus volveretur, misit Nabuchodonosor rex, qui adduxerunt eum in Babylonem, asportatis simul pretiosissimis vasis domus Domini; regem vero constituit Sedeciam fratrem eius super Iudam et Ierusalem.
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for eleven years inJerusalem.11 Viginti et unius anni erat Sedecias, cum regnare coepisset, et undecim annis regnavit in Ierusalem.
He did what is displeasing to Yahweh his God. He did not listen humbly to the prophet Jeremiah whospoke for Yahweh.12 Fecitque malum in oculis Domini Dei sui nec humiliavit se coram Ieremia propheta loquente ad se ex ore Domini.
Furthermore, he rebel ed against King Nebuchadnezzar who had made him swear al egiance to himby God. He became stubborn, and obstinately refused to return to Yahweh, God of Israel.13 Contra regem quoque Nabuchodonosor rebellavit, qui adiuraverat eum per Deum, et induravit cervicem suam et cor, ut non reverteretur ad Dominum, Deum Israel.
Furthermore, al the leaders of Judah, the priests and the people too, added infidelity to infidelity, copying al the shameful practices of the nations and defiling the Temple of Yahweh which he himself hadconsecrated in Jerusalem.14 Sed et universi principes sacerdotum et populus multiplicaverunt praevaricationes suas iuxta universas abominationes gentium et polluerunt domum Domini, quam sanctificaverat in Ierusalem.
Yahweh, God of their ancestors, continuously sent them word through his messengers because hefelt sorry for his people and his dwel ing,15 Mittebat autem Dominus, Deus patrum suorum, ad illos per manum nuntiorum suorum de nocte consurgens et cotidie commonens, eo quod parceret populo et habitaculo suo.
but they ridiculed the messengers of God, they despised his words, they laughed at his prophets, until Yahweh's wrath with his people became so fierce that there was no further remedy.16 At illi subsannabant nuntios Dei et parvipendebant sermones eius illudebantque prophetis, donec ascenderet furor Domini in populum eius, et esset nulla curatio.
So against them he summoned the king of the Chaldaeans and he put their young men to the swordwithin the very building of their Temple, not sparing young man or girl, or the old and infirm; he put them al at hismercy.17 Adduxit enim super eos regem Chaldaeorum et interfecit iuvenes eorum gladio in domo sanctuarii sui; non est misertus adulescentis et virginis et senis nec decrepiti quidem, sed omnes tradidit in manibus eius.
Al the things belonging to the Temple of God, whether large or smal , the treasures of the Temple ofYahweh, the treasures of the king and his officials, everything he took to Babylon.18 Universaque vasa domus Dei tam maiora quam minora et thesauros templi et regis et principum transtulit in Babylonem.
He burned down the temple of God, demolished the wal s of Jerusalem, burned al its palaces to theground and destroyed everything of value in it.19 Incenderunt hostes domum Dei destruxeruntque murum Ierusalem, universa palatia combusserunt et, quidquid pretiosum fuerat, demoliti sunt.
And those who had escaped the sword he deported to Babylon, where they were enslaved by himand his descendants until the rise of the kingdom of Persia,20 Si quis evaserat gladium, ductus in Babylonem servivit regi et filiis eius, donec imperaret rex Persarum,
to fulfil Yahweh's prophecy through Jeremiah: Until the country has paid off its Sabbaths, it wil liefal ow for al the days of its desolation -- until the seventy years are complete.21 ut compleretur sermo Domini ex ore Ieremiae: donec terra acciperet sabbata sua, cunctis diebus devastationis egit sabbatum, usque dum complerentur septuaginta anni.
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia -- to fulfil the word of Yahweh through Jeremiah -- Yahwehroused the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to issue a proclamation and to have it publicly displayed throughout hiskingdom:22 Anno autem primo Cyri regis Persarum ad explendum sermonem Domini, quem locutus fuerat per os Ieremiae, suscitavit Dominus spiritum Cyri regis Persarum, qui iussit praedicari in universo regno suo etiam per scripturam dicens:
'Cyrus king of Persia says this, "Yahweh, the God of Heaven, has given me al the kingdoms of theearth and has appointed me to build him a Temple in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among youof al his people, may his God be with him! Let him go up." '23 “ Haec dicit Cyrus rex Persarum: Omnia regna terrae dedit mihi Dominus, Deus caeli, et ipse praecepit mihi, ut aedificarem ei domum in Ierusalem, quae est in Iudaea. Quis ex vobis est de omni populo eius? Sit Dominus Deus suus cum eo, et ascendat ”.
