1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah	1 Nell'anno diciottesimo del re Geroboamo, Abia divenne re di Giuda.

7 Worthless men, scoundrels, ral ied to him, proving too strong for Rehoboam son of Solomon, asRehoboam was then inexperienced and timid and unable to resist them.	7 Si sono radunati presso di lui uomini spensierati e perversi, che si fecero forti contro Roboamo, figlio di Salomone. Roboamo era un giovane di poca intelligenza e non seppe farsi forte di fronte a loro.
8 And now you propose to resist Yahweh's sovereignty as exercised by the sons of David becausethere is a great number of you and you have the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods!	8 Ora voi pensate di tener testa al regno del Signore, che è nelle mani dei figli di Davide, perché voi siete una grande moltitudine e avete con voi i vitelli d'oro che Geroboamo vi ha costruito come vostro dio!
9 Have you not driven out the priests of Yahweh, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, to make priests ofyour own like the peoples of foreign countries? Anyone who comes with a bul and seven rams to get himselfconsecrated can become priest of these gods that are no gods.	9 Non avete voi forse scacciato i sacerdoti del Signore, figli di Aronne, e i leviti e non vi siete costituiti sacerdoti come i popoli degli altri paesi? 10 But for our part, our God is Yahweh, and we have not abandoned him; our priests are sons of Aaronwho minister to Yahweh, and those who serve are Levites;	10 Quanto a noi, il Signore è il nostro Dio; non l'abbiamo abbandonato; i sacerdoti che prestano servizio al Signore sono figli di Aronne, mentre per il ministero vi sono i leviti.
11 morning after morning, evening after evening, they present burnt offerings and perfumed incense toYahweh, they put the bread of permanent offering on the clean table and nightly light the lamps on the goldenlamp-stand; for we keep the decree of Yahweh our God, although you have abandoned him.	11 Essi offrono al Signore ogni mattina e ogni sera olocausti, profumi d'incenso, i pani dell'offerta su una tavola pura, dispongono il candelabro d'oro con le sue lampade da accendersi ogni sera, perché noi osserviamo le prescrizioni del Signore, nostro Dio, mentre voi lo avete abbandonato.
12 See how God is with us, at our head, and his priests with trumpets to sound the alarm against you!Israelites, do not make war on Yahweh, God of your ancestors, for you wil not succeed.'	12 Ecco con noi, alla testa, c'è Dio e i suoi sacerdoti e le trombe squillanti stanno per lanciare il grido di guerra contro di voi. Figli d'Israele, non fate la guerra contro il Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, perché non avrete successo!".
13 Now Jeroboam had sent a party round to ambush them from the rear; thus the main force confrontedJudah and the ambush lay to their rear.	13 Geroboamo li aggirò con un'imboscata per sorprenderli alle spalle. Le truppe stavano di fronte a Giuda, mentre gli imboscati erano alle spalle.
14 And when Judah looked round, they found themselves being attacked from front and rear. Theycal ed on Yahweh, the priests sounded the trumpets,	14 Quando quelli di Giuda si voltarono, si accorsero di dover combattere di fronte e alle spalle. 15 and the men of Judah raised the war cry and, as they raised the cry, God routed Jeroboam and allIsrael before Abijah and Judah.	15 Gli uomini di Giuda lanciarono il grido di guerra, e mentre quelli di Giuda emettevano il grido di guerra, Dio colpì Geroboamo e tutto Israele di fronte ad Abia e a Giuda.

17 and Abijah and his army inflicted a great slaughter on them: five hundred thousand of Israel's pickedmen fel , kil ed.	17 Abia ed il suo esercito inflissero loro una grave sconfitta; cinquecentomila uomini scelti caddero morti fra gl'Israeliti.
18 So the Israelites were humbled on that occasion, while the Judaeans won, since they had relied onYahweh, God of their ancestors.	18 In quel tempo furono umiliati gl'Israeliti, mentre quelli di Giuda si rafforzarono, perché si erano appoggiati sul Signore, Dio dei loro padri.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam, taking from him the towns of Bethel with its dependencies, Jeshanah withits dependencies and Ephron with its dependencies,	19 Abia inseguì Geroboamo e gli tolse queste città: Betel con le sue dipendenze, Iesana con le sue dipendenze, Efron con le sue dipendenze.
20 nor did Jeroboam regain strength during Abijah's lifetime. Eventual y Yahweh struck him and he died,	20 Durante la vita di Abia, Geroboamo non poté riprendere forza; Dio lo colpì ed egli morì.
21 but Abijah grew stronger than ever; he married fourteen wives and fathered twenty-two sons andsixteen daughters.	21 Abia, invece, si rafforzò; prese quattordici mogli e generò ventidue figli e sedici figlie.
22 The rest of the history of Abijah, his conduct and his sayings, are recorded in the midrash of theprophet Iddo.	22 Il resto delle gesta di Abia, la sua condotta e le sue azioni sono descritte nelle memorie del profeta Iddo.
23 When Abijah fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asasucceeded him. In his time the country was at peace for ten years.	23 Abia si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto nella Città di Davide. Al suo posto divenne re Asa, suo figlio. Ai suoi tempi il paese fu tranquillo per dieci anni.
