1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah	1 Anno diciottesimo del regno di Geroboam, Abia regnò in Giuda.
2 and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.When war broke out between Abijah and Jeroboam,	2 Tre anni regnò in Gerusalemme. Sua madre ebbe nome Michaia figliuola di Uriel di Gabaa. E fu guerra tra Abia, e Geroboamo.
3 Abijah took the field with an army of four hundred thousand picked warriors, while Jeroboam took thefield against him with eight hundred thousand picked warriors.	3 E Abia avendo mossa la guerra, e avendo quattrocento mila uomini valorosissimi, e scelti; Geroboamo dall'altra parte mise in ordine un esercito di ottocento mila uomini scelti, e fortissimi nel mestiero delle armi.
4 Abijah took position on Mount Zemaraim, in the highlands of Ephraim. 'Jeroboam and al Israel,' hecried, 'listen to me!	4 Abia adunque si piantò sul monte Semeron, che è nella tribù di Ephraim, e disse: Ascolta tu Geroboam, e tutto Israele:
5 Do you not know that Yahweh, God of Israel, has given eternal sovereignty of Israel to David and hissons by an inviolable covenant?	5 Ignorate voi forse, come il Signore Dio d'Israele diede per sempre il regno d'Israele a David, e a' suoi figliuoli con patto inviolabile?
6 Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, the slave of Solomon son of David, rose in revolt against his master.	6 E come si levò su Geroboam figliuolo di Nabath, servo di Salomone figliuolo di David: e si ribellò contro il suo signore.
7 Worthless men, scoundrels, ral ied to him, proving too strong for Rehoboam son of Solomon, asRehoboam was then inexperienced and timid and unable to resist them.	7 E si unirono con lui uomini vanissimi, figliuoli di Belial, e supplantarono Roboamo figliuolo di Salomone. Or Roboamo era inesperto, e di poco cuore, e non potè resistere ad essi.
8 And now you propose to resist Yahweh's sovereignty as exercised by the sons of David becausethere is a great number of you and you have the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods!	8 Adesso pertanto voi dite, che avete forze da sottrarvi al regno del Signore posseduto da lui per mezzo dei figliuoli di David, e avete turba grande di popolo, e i vitelli d'oro fatti a voi da Geroboam per vostri dei.
9 Have you not driven out the priests of Yahweh, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, to make priests ofyour own like the peoples of foreign countries? Anyone who comes with a bul and seven rams to get himselfconsecrated can become priest of these gods that are no gods.	9 E avete discacciati ì sacerdoti del Signore, figliuoli d'Aaronne, e i Leviti: e vi siete creati de' sacerdoti, come tutte le genti della terra: venga chi si sia, e consagri la sua mano immolando un giovine toro, e sette arieti, egli è sacerdote di quelli, che non son dei.
10 But for our part, our God is Yahweh, and we have not abandoned him; our priests are sons of Aaronwho minister to Yahweh, and those who serve are Levites;	10 Ma il Signore nostro egli è Dio, e noi non lo abbandoniamo; e al Signore servono i sacerdoti della stirpe d'Aaronne, e i Leviti nelle cose, che toccano adessi:
11 morning after morning, evening after evening, they present burnt offerings and perfumed incense toYahweh, they put the bread of permanent offering on the clean table and nightly light the lamps on the goldenlamp-stand; for we keep the decree of Yahweh our God, although you have abandoned him.	11 Ed eglino offeriscono olocausti al Signore mattina, e sera, e i timiami manipolati secondo il prescritto della legge, e si espongono i pani sopra una mensa mondissima, ed abbiam presso di noi il candeliere d'oro colle sue lampane, che si accendono sempre la sera: perocché noi osserviamo i precetti del Signore Dio nostro, cui voi avete abbandonato.
12 See how God is with us, at our head, and his priests with trumpets to sound the alarm against you!Israelites, do not make war on Yahweh, God of your ancestors, for you wil not succeed.'	12 Per la qual cosa il condottiero del nostro esercito egli è Dio, e i suoi sacerdoti dan fiato alle trombe, e le suonano contro di voi. Figliuoli d'Israele, non vogliate combattere contro il Signore Dio de' padri vostri, perchè a voi ciò non torna.
13 Now Jeroboam had sent a party round to ambush them from the rear; thus the main force confrontedJudah and the ambush lay to their rear.	13 Mentre egli cosi parlava, Geroboam di dietro gli tendeva insidie. E stando in faccia a' nemici, andava cingendo Giuda col suo esercito.
14 And when Judah looked round, they found themselves being attacked from front and rear. Theycal ed on Yahweh, the priests sounded the trumpets,	14 E Giuda volgendosi indietro vide, come egli era assalito di fronte, e alle spalle, e alzò le grida al Signore: e i sacerdoti principiarono a sonare le trombe.
15 and the men of Judah raised the war cry and, as they raised the cry, God routed Jeroboam and allIsrael before Abijah and Judah.	15 E tutti gli uomini di Giuda diedero un grido: e al rimbombo delle lor voci Dio atterrì Geroboam, e tutto Israele, che assaliva Abia, e Giuda.
16 So the Israelites fled before Judah, because God had given Judah the upper hand,	16 E i figliuoli d'Israele voltaron le spalle a Giuda, e Dio gli abbandonò nelle mani di lui.
17 and Abijah and his army inflicted a great slaughter on them: five hundred thousand of Israel's pickedmen fel , kil ed.	17 Abia adunque, e il suo popolo ne fecero gran macello: e delle loro ferite morirono dalla parte d'Israele cinque cento mila uomini di valore.
18 So the Israelites were humbled on that occasion, while the Judaeans won, since they had relied onYahweh, God of their ancestors.	18 E restarono abbattuti in quel tempo i figliuoli d'Israele, e grandissimo vigore ripresero i figliuoli di Giuda, perchè aveano sperato nel Signore Dio de' padri loro.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam, taking from him the towns of Bethel with its dependencies, Jeshanah withits dependencies and Ephron with its dependencies,	19 E Abia inseguì Geroboam che fuggiva, e prese le sue città, Bethel, e i luoghi di sua dipendenza, e Jesana, e i luoghi di sua dipendenza, e anche Ephron colle sue adiacenze.
20 nor did Jeroboam regain strength during Abijah's lifetime. Eventual y Yahweh struck him and he died,	20 E Geroboam non potè più far testa, mentre visse Abia: e fu percosso dal Signore, e morì.
21 but Abijah grew stronger than ever; he married fourteen wives and fathered twenty-two sons andsixteen daughters.	21 Abia adunque, assodato il suo impero, prese quattordici mogli: e generò ventidue figliuoli, e sedici figliuole.
22 The rest of the history of Abijah, his conduct and his sayings, are recorded in the midrash of theprophet Iddo.	22 Il rimanente poi delle geste di Abia, e de' suoi costumi, e delle sue opere sta minutissimamente descritto nel libro di Addo profeta.
23 When Abijah fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asasucceeded him. In his time the country was at peace for ten years.
