NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah1 Anno octavo decimo regis Ieroboam regnavit Abia su per Iudam.
and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. When war broke out between Abijah and Jeroboam,2 Tribus annis regnavit in Ierusalem. Nomenque matris eius Michaia filia Uriel de Gabaa.
Et erat bellum inter Abiam et Ieroboam.
Abijah took the field with an army of four hundred thousand picked warriors, while Jeroboam took thefield against him with eight hundred thousand picked warriors.3 Cumque inisset Abia certamen et haberet bellicosissimos viros electorum quadringenta milia, Ieroboam instruxit e contra aciem octingenta milia virorum, qui et ipsi electi erant et ad bella fortissimi.
Abijah took position on Mount Zemaraim, in the highlands of Ephraim. 'Jeroboam and al Israel,' hecried, 'listen to me!4 Stetit igitur Abia super montem Semaraim, qui est in monte Ephraim, et ait: “ Audi, Ieroboam et omnis Israel:
Do you not know that Yahweh, God of Israel, has given eternal sovereignty of Israel to David and hissons by an inviolable covenant?5 Num ignoratis quod Dominus, Deus Israel, dederit regnum David super Israel in sempiternum, ipsi et filiis eius, pactum salis?
Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, the slave of Solomon son of David, rose in revolt against his master.6 Et surrexit Ieroboam filius Nabat servus Salomonis filii David et rebellavit contra dominum suum;
Worthless men, scoundrels, ral ied to him, proving too strong for Rehoboam son of Solomon, asRehoboam was then inexperienced and timid and unable to resist them.7 congregatique sunt ad eum viri vanissimi, filii Belial, et praevaluerunt contra Roboam filium Salomonis. Porro Roboam erat iuvenis et corde pavido nec potuit resistere eis.
And now you propose to resist Yahweh's sovereignty as exercised by the sons of David becausethere is a great number of you and you have the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods!8 Nunc ergo vos dicitis quod resistere possitis regno Domini, quod possidet per filios David, habetisque grandem populi multitudinem atque vitulos aureos, quos fecit vobis Ieroboam in deos.
Have you not driven out the priests of Yahweh, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, to make priests ofyour own like the peoples of foreign countries? Anyone who comes with a bul and seven rams to get himselfconsecrated can become priest of these gods that are no gods.9 Et eiecistis sacerdotes Domini filios Aaron atque Levitas et fecistis vobis sacerdotes sicut populi terrarum. Quicumque venerit et initiaverit manum suam in tauro de bobus et in arietibus septem, fit sacerdos eorum, qui non sunt dii.
But for our part, our God is Yahweh, and we have not abandoned him; our priests are sons of Aaronwho minister to Yahweh, and those who serve are Levites;10 Noster autem Deus Dominus est, quem non reliquimus; sacerdotesque ministrant Domino de filiis Aaron, et Levitae sunt in ordine suo.
morning after morning, evening after evening, they present burnt offerings and perfumed incense toYahweh, they put the bread of permanent offering on the clean table and nightly light the lamps on the goldenlamp-stand; for we keep the decree of Yahweh our God, although you have abandoned him.11 Holocausta quoque offerunt Domino per singulos dies, mane et vespere, et thymiama aromatum, et proponuntur panes in mensa mundissima. Estque apud nos candelabrum aureum et lucernae eius, ut accendantur semper ad vesperam; nos quippe custodimus praecepta Domini Dei nostri, quem vos reliquistis.
See how God is with us, at our head, and his priests with trumpets to sound the alarm against you!Israelites, do not make war on Yahweh, God of your ancestors, for you wil not succeed.'12 Ergo in exercitu nostro dux Deus est et sacerdotes eius, qui clangunt tubis et resonant contra vos, filii Israel; nolite pugnare contra Dominum, Deum patrum vestrorum, quia non vobis expedit ”.
Now Jeroboam had sent a party round to ambush them from the rear; thus the main force confrontedJudah and the ambush lay to their rear.13 Ieroboam autem retro moliebatur insidias, ut venirent post eos, et erant ante Iudam, et insidiae post eos.
And when Judah looked round, they found themselves being attacked from front and rear. Theycal ed on Yahweh, the priests sounded the trumpets,14 Respiciensque Iuda vidit instare bellum ex adverso et post tergum et clamavit ad Dominum, ac sacerdotes tubis canere coeperunt,
and the men of Judah raised the war cry and, as they raised the cry, God routed Jeroboam and allIsrael before Abijah and Judah.15 omnesque viri Iudae vociferati sunt; et ecce, illis clamantibus, perterruit Deus Ieroboam et omnem Israel coram Abia et Iuda.
So the Israelites fled before Judah, because God had given Judah the upper hand,16 Fugeruntque filii Israel Iudam, et tradidit eos Deus in manu eorum.
and Abijah and his army inflicted a great slaughter on them: five hundred thousand of Israel's pickedmen fel , kil ed.17 Percussit ergo eos Abia et populus eius plaga magna; et corruerunt vulnerati ex Israel quingenta milia virorum fortium.
So the Israelites were humbled on that occasion, while the Judaeans won, since they had relied onYahweh, God of their ancestors.18 Humiliatique sunt filii Israel in tempore illo, et confortati filii Iudae, eo quod sperassent in Domino, Deo patrum suorum.
Abijah pursued Jeroboam, taking from him the towns of Bethel with its dependencies, Jeshanah withits dependencies and Ephron with its dependencies,19 Persecutus est autem Abia fugientem Ieroboam et cepit civitates eius Bethel et filias eius et Iesana cum filiabus suis, Ephron quoque et filias eius.
nor did Jeroboam regain strength during Abijah's lifetime. Eventual y Yahweh struck him and he died,20 Nec invaluit ultra Ieroboam in diebus Abiae. Quem percussit Dominus, et mortuus est.
but Abijah grew stronger than ever; he married fourteen wives and fathered twenty-two sons andsixteen daughters.21 Abia autem confortatus est et accepit sibi uxores quattuordecim procreavitque viginti duos filios et sedecim filias.
The rest of the history of Abijah, his conduct and his sayings, are recorded in the midrash of theprophet Iddo.22 Reliqua autem gestorum Abiae viarumque et sermonum eius scripta sunt in enarratione prophetae Addo.
When Abijah fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asasucceeded him. In his time the country was at peace for ten years.23 Dormivit autem Abia cum patribus suis, et sepelierunt eum in civitate David; regnavitque Asa filius eius pro eo. In cuius diebus quievit terra annis decem.
