1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah	1 - Nell'anno diciottesimo del regno di Geroboamo, Abia cominciò a regnare sopra Giuda,
2 and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.When war broke out between Abijah and Jeroboam,	2 e regnò tre anni in Gerusalemme. La madre di lui fu Micaia, figlia di Uriel di Gabaa. Vi fu guerra tra Abia e Geroboamo.
3 Abijah took the field with an army of four hundred thousand picked warriors, while Jeroboam took thefield against him with eight hundred thousand picked warriors.	3 Abia entrò in guerra con valorosissimi combattenti e con quattrocentomila uomini scelti, e Geroboamo gli oppose ottocentomila uomini, scelti guerrieri, fortissimi in guerra.
4 Abijah took position on Mount Zemaraim, in the highlands of Ephraim. 'Jeroboam and al Israel,' hecried, 'listen to me!	4 Abia si pose sul monte Semeron, che è in Efraim, e disse: «Ascoltate Geroboamo e tutto Israele:
5 Do you not know that Yahweh, God of Israel, has given eternal sovereignty of Israel to David and hissons by an inviolable covenant?	5 Ignorate voi che il Signore Dio d'Israele diede in eterno il regno sopra Israele a Davide e ai figli suoi con un patto di sale?
6 Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, the slave of Solomon son of David, rose in revolt against his master.	6 E Geroboamo, figlio di Nabat, servo di Salomone, figlio di Davide si levò, e si ribellò contro il suo padrone,
7 Worthless men, scoundrels, ral ied to him, proving too strong for Rehoboam son of Solomon, asRehoboam was then inexperienced and timid and unable to resist them.	7 e attorno a lui si riunirono dei figli di Belial, degli uomini da nulla, e prevalsero contro Roboamo, figlio di Salomone. Ora Roboamo era inesperto e pauroso e non potè resistere loro.
8 And now you propose to resist Yahweh's sovereignty as exercised by the sons of David becausethere is a great number of you and you have the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods!	8 Ma ora voi dite di poter resistere al regno del Signore, che egli possiede per mezzo dei figli di Davide, avendo una gran quantità di popolo e i vitelli d'oro, che Geroboamo vi ha fatti per vostri dèi;
9 Have you not driven out the priests of Yahweh, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, to make priests ofyour own like the peoples of foreign countries? Anyone who comes with a bul and seven rams to get himselfconsecrated can become priest of these gods that are no gods.	9 e avete scacciati i sacerdoti del Signore, i figli di Aronne ed i leviti e vi siete creati dei sacerdoti, come quelli che hanno tutti i popoli della terra. Chiunque veniva e consacrava la sua mano col sacrificio di un giovine toro e di sette arieti, era fatto sacerdote di quelli che non sono dèi.
10 But for our part, our God is Yahweh, and we have not abandoned him; our priests are sons of Aaronwho minister to Yahweh, and those who serve are Levites;	10 Il nostro Signore è Dio; noi non l'abbiamo mai abbandonato, e i sacerdoti appartenenti ai figli di Aronne servono al Signore, e i leviti attendono al loro turno.
11 morning after morning, evening after evening, they present burnt offerings and perfumed incense toYahweh, they put the bread of permanent offering on the clean table and nightly light the lamps on the goldenlamp-stand; for we keep the decree of Yahweh our God, although you have abandoned him.	11 Essi offrono olocausti al Signore tutti i giorni, la mattina e la sera; preparano il profumo secondo le prescrizioni legali; espongono i pani sopra una tavola mondissima. Presso di noi poi vi è il candelabro d'oro, e le sue lucerne, perchè sian sempre accese alla sera, poichè noi custodiamo la prescrizione del Signore Dio nostro, che voi avete abbandonato.
12 See how God is with us, at our head, and his priests with trumpets to sound the alarm against you!Israelites, do not make war on Yahweh, God of your ancestors, for you wil not succeed.'	12 Perciò nell'esercito nostro vi è Dio come condottiero, e vi sono i suoi sacerdoti che suonano le trombe e le fanno squillare contro di voi. Figli d'Israele, non vogliate combattere contro il Signore Dio dei padri vostri, poichè non vi conviene».
13 Now Jeroboam had sent a party round to ambush them from the rear; thus the main force confrontedJudah and the ambush lay to their rear.	13 Mentre egli parlava così, Geroboamo di dietro gli tendeva insidie. E mentre egli stava in faccia ai nemici, Geroboamo avvolgeva col suo esercito Giuda, che non se ne accorgeva.
14 And when Judah looked round, they found themselves being attacked from front and rear. Theycal ed on Yahweh, the priests sounded the trumpets,	14 Quando Giuda, voltosi indietro, vide d'essere assalito di fronte e alle spalle, gridò al Signore; i sacerdoti si diedero a far squillare le trombe
15 and the men of Judah raised the war cry and, as they raised the cry, God routed Jeroboam and allIsrael before Abijah and Judah.	15 e tutti gli uomini di Giuda alzarono la voce. Ed ecco che a questi clamori Dio atterrì Geroboamo e tutto Israele, che assaliva Abia e Giuda;
16 So the Israelites fled before Judah, because God had given Judah the upper hand,	16 e i figli d'Israele fuggirono dinanzi a Giuda, nelle cui mani il Signore li abbandonò.
17 and Abijah and his army inflicted a great slaughter on them: five hundred thousand of Israel's pickedmen fel , kil ed.	17 Abia adunque e il popolo suo li abbatterono con grande sconfitta e caddero colpiti cinquecentomila uomini forti d'Israele.
18 So the Israelites were humbled on that occasion, while the Judaeans won, since they had relied onYahweh, God of their ancestors.	18 Furono perciò umiliati i figli d'Israele in quel tempo, e ripresero grande vigore i figli di Giuda, perchè avevano sperato nel Signore Dio dei padri loro.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam, taking from him the towns of Bethel with its dependencies, Jeshanah withits dependencies and Ephron with its dependencies,	19 Abia inseguì Geroboamo, che fuggiva e gli prese parecchie città: Betel e i suoi dintorni, Jesana colle sue dipendenze, come pure Efron e i villaggi che gli eran vicini;
20 nor did Jeroboam regain strength during Abijah's lifetime. Eventual y Yahweh struck him and he died,	20 nè Geroboamo potè mai più resistere durante il regno di Abia, e colpito dal Signore venne a morte.
21 but Abijah grew stronger than ever; he married fourteen wives and fathered twenty-two sons andsixteen daughters.	21 Allora Abia consolidatosi nel suo regno, si prese quattordici mogli, dalle quali procreò ventidue figli e sedici figlie.
22 The rest of the history of Abijah, his conduct and his sayings, are recorded in the midrash of theprophet Iddo.	22 Il resto delle gesta di Abia, e le sue vie e le sue opere furono scritte diligentemente nel libro del profeta Addo.
23 When Abijah fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asasucceeded him. In his time the country was at peace for ten years.
