1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah	1 Abías comenzó a reinar sobre Judá el año dieciocho del rey Jeroboam.
2 and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.When war broke out between Abijah and Jeroboam,	2 Reinó tres años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Mikaía, hija de Uriel, de Guibeá. Hubo guerra entre Abías y Jeroboam.
3 Abijah took the field with an army of four hundred thousand picked warriors, while Jeroboam took thefield against him with eight hundred thousand picked warriors.	3 Abías entró en combate con un ejército de valientes guerreros: 400.000 hombres escogidos; Jeroboam se ordenó en batalla contra él con 800.000 guerreros escogidos y valerosos.
4 Abijah took position on Mount Zemaraim, in the highlands of Ephraim. 'Jeroboam and al Israel,' hecried, 'listen to me!	4 Abías se levantó en el monte Semaráyim, que está en la montaña de Efraím, y dijo: «¡Oídme, Jeroboam y todo Israel!
5 Do you not know that Yahweh, God of Israel, has given eternal sovereignty of Israel to David and hissons by an inviolable covenant?	5 ¿Acaso no sabéis que Yahveh, el Dios de Israel, dio el reino de Israel para siempre a David, a él y a sus hijos, con pacto de sal?
6 Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, the slave of Solomon son of David, rose in revolt against his master.	6 Pero Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat, siervo de Salomón, hijo de David, se alzó en rebeldía contra su señor.
7 Worthless men, scoundrels, ral ied to him, proving too strong for Rehoboam son of Solomon, asRehoboam was then inexperienced and timid and unable to resist them.	7 Se juntaron con él unos hombres fatuos y malvados y prevalecieron sobre Roboam, hijo de Salomón, pues Roboam era joven y débil de corazón y no podía resistirles.
8 And now you propose to resist Yahweh's sovereignty as exercised by the sons of David becausethere is a great number of you and you have the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods!	8 ¿Y ahora tratáis vosotros de poner resistencia al reino de Yahveh, que está en manos de los hijos de David, porque vosotros sois una gran muchedumbre? Pero tenéis los becerros de oro que Jeroboam os puso por dioses.
9 Have you not driven out the priests of Yahweh, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, to make priests ofyour own like the peoples of foreign countries? Anyone who comes with a bul and seven rams to get himselfconsecrated can become priest of these gods that are no gods.	9 ¿No habéis expulsado a los sacerdotes de Yahveh, los hijos de Aarón y los levitas? ¿No os habéis hecho sacerdotes a la manera de los pueblos de los demás países? Cualquiera que viene con un novillo y siete carneros y pide ser consagrado, es hecho sacerdote de los que no son dioses.
10 But for our part, our God is Yahweh, and we have not abandoned him; our priests are sons of Aaronwho minister to Yahweh, and those who serve are Levites;	10 Cuanto a nosotros, Yahveh es nuestro Dios y no le hemos abandonado; los sacerdotes que sirven a Yahveh son los hijos de Aarón, igual que los levitas en su ministerio.
11 morning after morning, evening after evening, they present burnt offerings and perfumed incense toYahweh, they put the bread of permanent offering on the clean table and nightly light the lamps on the goldenlamp-stand; for we keep the decree of Yahweh our God, although you have abandoned him.	11 Cada mañana y cada tarde quemamos holocaustos a Yahveh, y tenemos el incienso aromático; las filas de pan están sobre la mesa pura, y el candelabro de oro con sus lámparas para ser encendidas cada tarde, pues nosotros guardamos el ritual de Yahveh nuestro Dios, en tanto que vosotros le habéis abandonado.
12 See how God is with us, at our head, and his priests with trumpets to sound the alarm against you!Israelites, do not make war on Yahweh, God of your ancestors, for you wil not succeed.'	12 He aquí que con nosotros, a nuestra cabeza, está Dios con sus sacerdotes y las trompetas del clamor, para lanzar el grito de guerra contra vosotros. Israelitas, no hagáis la guerra contra Yahveh, el Dios de vuestros padres, porque nada conseguiréis».
13 Now Jeroboam had sent a party round to ambush them from the rear; thus the main force confrontedJudah and the ambush lay to their rear.	13 Entre tanto, Jeroboam hizo dar un rodeo para poner una emboscada y atarcarles por detrás, de manera que él estaba frente a Judá y la emboscada a espaldas de éstos.
14 And when Judah looked round, they found themselves being attacked from front and rear. Theycal ed on Yahweh, the priests sounded the trumpets,	14 Al volver Judá la cabeza, vio que se presentaba combate de frente y por detrás.
15 and the men of Judah raised the war cry and, as they raised the cry, God routed Jeroboam and allIsrael before Abijah and Judah.	15 Entonces clamaron a Yahveh y, mientras los sacerdotes tocaban las trompetas, los hombres de Judá lanzaron el grito de guerra; y al alzar el grito de guerra los hombres de Judá, desbarató Dios a Jeroboam y a todo Israel delante de Abías y de Judá.
16 So the Israelites fled before Judah, because God had given Judah the upper hand,	16 Huyeron los israelitas delante de Judá, y Dios los entregó en sus manos.
17 and Abijah and his army inflicted a great slaughter on them: five hundred thousand of Israel's pickedmen fel , kil ed.	17 Abías y su tropa les causaron una gran derrota; cayeron 500.000 hombres escogidos de Israel.
18 So the Israelites were humbled on that occasion, while the Judaeans won, since they had relied onYahweh, God of their ancestors.	18 Quedaron entonces humillados los israelitas y prevalecieron los hijos de Judá por haberse apoyado en Yahveh, el Dios de sus padres.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam, taking from him the towns of Bethel with its dependencies, Jeshanah withits dependencies and Ephron with its dependencies,	19 Abías persiguió a Jeroboam y le tomó las ciudades de Betel con sus aldeas, Yesaná con sus aldeas y Efrón con sus aldeas.
20 nor did Jeroboam regain strength during Abijah's lifetime. Eventual y Yahweh struck him and he died,	20 Jeroboam ya no tuvo fuerza en los días de Abías, pues Yahveh le hirió y murió.
21 but Abijah grew stronger than ever; he married fourteen wives and fathered twenty-two sons andsixteen daughters.	21 Pero Abías se fortaleció; tomó catorce mujeres y engendró veintidós hijos y dieciséis hijas.
22 The rest of the history of Abijah, his conduct and his sayings, are recorded in the midrash of theprophet Iddo.	22 El resto de los hechos de Abías, sus hechos y sus acciones, están escritos en el midrás del profeta Iddó.
23 When Abijah fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asasucceeded him. In his time the country was at peace for ten years.	23 Se acostó Abías con sus padres y le sepultaron en la ciudad de David. Reinó en su lugar su hijo Asá. En su tiempo el país estuvo en paz durante diez años.
