1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah	1 Abiya commença à régner sur Juda en la dix-huitième année du roi Jéroboam;
2 and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.When war broke out between Abijah and Jeroboam,	2 il régna trois ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère était Mikayas, fille d’Ouriel de Guibéa. Il y eut une guerre entre Abiya et Jéroboam.
3 Abijah took the field with an army of four hundred thousand picked warriors, while Jeroboam took thefield against him with eight hundred thousand picked warriors.	3 Abiya engagea la bataille avec une armée de soldats entraînés (400 000 excellents soldats) et Jéroboam se rangea face à lui avec 800 000 excellents soldats, tous soldats entraînés.
4 Abijah took position on Mount Zemaraim, in the highlands of Ephraim. 'Jeroboam and al Israel,' hecried, 'listen to me!	4 Abiya alla se poster sur le mont Sémarayim, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm; de là il cria: “Jéroboam et vous tous, gens d’Israël, écoutez-moi!
5 Do you not know that Yahweh, God of Israel, has given eternal sovereignty of Israel to David and hissons by an inviolable covenant?	5 Ne savez-vous pas que Yahvé, Dieu d’Israël, a donné pour toujours la royauté sur Israël à David et à ses fils, grâce à une alliance qui ne peut être rompue?
6 Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, the slave of Solomon son of David, rose in revolt against his master.	6 Mais Jéroboam fils de Nabat, serviteur de Salomon fils de David, s’est révolté contre son seigneur.
7 Worthless men, scoundrels, ral ied to him, proving too strong for Rehoboam son of Solomon, asRehoboam was then inexperienced and timid and unable to resist them.	7 Des hommes de rien composaient alors l’entourage de Roboam fils de Salomon, ils lui ont imposé leur loi. Roboam était jeune et timide alors, et il n’a pas su leur tenir tête.
8 And now you propose to resist Yahweh's sovereignty as exercised by the sons of David becausethere is a great number of you and you have the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods!	8 Et c’est vous maintenant qui voulez tenir tête à la royauté de Yahvé, quand elle est entre les mains des descendants de David puisque vous êtes venus une foule immense. Et vous avez amené les veaux d’or que Jéroboam vous a donnés comme dieux.
9 Have you not driven out the priests of Yahweh, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, to make priests ofyour own like the peoples of foreign countries? Anyone who comes with a bul and seven rams to get himselfconsecrated can become priest of these gods that are no gods.	9 N’avez-vous pas chassé les prêtres de Yahvé, les fils d’Aaron, et les lévites, pour vous donner des prêtres comme le font les peuples étrangers? Quiconque arrive avec un taureau et sept béliers pour se faire donner la consécration, peut devenir prêtre d’idoles qui ne sont pas Dieu!
10 But for our part, our God is Yahweh, and we have not abandoned him; our priests are sons of Aaronwho minister to Yahweh, and those who serve are Levites;	10 Notre Dieu à nous, c’est Yahvé, et nous ne l’avons pas abandonné; les fils d’Aaron sont prêtres au service de Yahvé et les lévites les assistent.
11 morning after morning, evening after evening, they present burnt offerings and perfumed incense toYahweh, they put the bread of permanent offering on the clean table and nightly light the lamps on the goldenlamp-stand; for we keep the decree of Yahweh our God, although you have abandoned him.	11 Chaque matin et chaque soir on fait fumer pour Yahvé les holocaustes et l’encens parfumé. Nous avons les pains rangés sur la table sainte, le chandelier d’or avec ses lampes qu’on allume chaque soir. Nous observons l’ordonnance de Yahvé notre Dieu que vous, vous avez abandonnée!
12 See how God is with us, at our head, and his priests with trumpets to sound the alarm against you!Israelites, do not make war on Yahweh, God of your ancestors, for you wil not succeed.'	12 Nous avons Dieu à notre tête, avec ses prêtres et les trompettes pour l’appeler, et elles vont sonner contre vous, fils d’Israël! Ne combattez pas contre Yahvé, le Dieu de vos pères; vous ne réussirez pas!”
13 Now Jeroboam had sent a party round to ambush them from the rear; thus the main force confrontedJudah and the ambush lay to their rear.	13 Jéroboam fit faire un mouvement tournant aux hommes qu’il avait placés en embuscade et ils arrivèrent sur les arrières de Juda: l’armée était devant et l’embuscade, derrière.
14 And when Judah looked round, they found themselves being attacked from front and rear. Theycal ed on Yahweh, the priests sounded the trumpets,	14 En se retournant, les Judéens virent qu’ils avaient à combattre devant et derrière eux; ils crièrent vers Yahvé, les prêtres sonnèrent de la trompette,
15 and the men of Judah raised the war cry and, as they raised the cry, God routed Jeroboam and allIsrael before Abijah and Judah.	15 et les hommes de Juda poussèrent le cri de guerre. Pendant qu’ils poussaient ainsi ce cri, Dieu frappa Jéroboam et tout Israël devant Abiya et Juda.
16 So the Israelites fled before Judah, because God had given Judah the upper hand,	16 Les Israélites prirent la fuite devant Juda et Yahvé les livra entre leurs mains.
17 and Abijah and his army inflicted a great slaughter on them: five hundred thousand of Israel's pickedmen fel , kil ed.	17 Abiya et son peuple leur infligèrent une grande défaite; 500 000 excellents soldats d’Israël tombèrent blessés à mort.
18 So the Israelites were humbled on that occasion, while the Judaeans won, since they had relied onYahweh, God of their ancestors.	18 En cette occasion les Israélites furent abaissés tandis que les fils de Juda sortaient raffermis, car ils s’étaient appuyés sur Yahvé, le Dieu de leurs pères.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam, taking from him the towns of Bethel with its dependencies, Jeshanah withits dependencies and Ephron with its dependencies,	19 Abiya poursuivit Jéroboam et lui prit des villes: Béthel et ses dépendances, Yéchana et ses dépendances, Éfron et ses dépendances.
20 nor did Jeroboam regain strength during Abijah's lifetime. Eventual y Yahweh struck him and he died,	20 Jéroboam ne retrouva pas sa puissance durant les jours d’Abiya, puis Yahvé le frappa et il mourut.
21 but Abijah grew stronger than ever; he married fourteen wives and fathered twenty-two sons andsixteen daughters.	21 Abiya au contraire se raffermit; il eut 14 femmes qui lui donnèrent 22 fils et 16 filles.
22 The rest of the history of Abijah, his conduct and his sayings, are recorded in the midrash of theprophet Iddo.	22 Le reste des actes d’Abiya, tous ses faits et gestes, cela est écrit dans le récit du prophète Iddo.
23 When Abijah fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asasucceeded him. In his time the country was at peace for ten years.	23 Abiya se coucha avec ses pères et on l’enterra dans la Cité de David; son fils Aza régna à sa place et le pays fut alors tranquille pendant 10 ans.
