NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah	1 L’ANNO diciottesimo del re Geroboamo, Abia cominciò a regnare sopra Giuda.
2 and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.When war broke out between Abijah and Jeroboam,	2 Egli regnò tre anni in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Micaia, figliuola di Uriel, da Ghibea. Or vi fu guerra fra Abia e Geroboamo.
3 Abijah took the field with an army of four hundred thousand picked warriors, while Jeroboam took thefield against him with eight hundred thousand picked warriors.	3 Ed Abia venne a battaglia con un esercito di quattrocentomila combattenti, tutti uomini scelti. E Geroboamo ordinò la battaglia contro a lui con ottocentomila combattenti, tutti uomini scelti.
4 Abijah took position on Mount Zemaraim, in the highlands of Ephraim. 'Jeroboam and al Israel,' hecried, 'listen to me!	4 Ed Abia si levò in piè disopra al monte di Semaraim, che è nelle montagne di Efraim, e disse: O Geroboamo, e tutto Israle, ascoltatemi:

6 Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, the slave of Solomon son of David, rose in revolt against his master.	6 Ma Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat, servo di Salomone, figliuolo di Davide, si è levato, e si è ribellato contro al suo signore.
7 Worthless men, scoundrels, ral ied to him, proving too strong for Rehoboam son of Solomon, asRehoboam was then inexperienced and timid and unable to resist them.	7 E certi uomini da nulla e scellerati, si sono adunati appresso di lui, e si sono fortificati contro a Roboamo, figliuolo di Salomone, il quale essendo giovane, e di cuor molle, non ha contrastato loro valorosamente.
8 And now you propose to resist Yahweh's sovereignty as exercised by the sons of David becausethere is a great number of you and you have the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods!	8 Ed ora voi pensate di resistere ostinatamente al regno del Signore, che è fra le mani de’ figliuoli di Davide; perciocchè voi siete una gran moltitudine, ed avete con voi i vitelli d’oro che Geroboamo vi ha fatti per dii.
9 Have you not driven out the priests of Yahweh, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, to make priests ofyour own like the peoples of foreign countries? Anyone who comes with a bul and seven rams to get himselfconsecrated can become priest of these gods that are no gods.	9 Non avete voi scacciati i sacerdoti del Signore, i figliuoli d’Aaronne, ed i Leviti? e non vi avete voi fatti de’ sacerdoti nella maniera de’ popoli de’ paesi? chiunque si è presentato per consacrarsi con un giovenco, e con sette montoni? e così è divenuto sacerdote di quelli che non son dii.
10 But for our part, our God is Yahweh, and we have not abandoned him; our priests are sons of Aaronwho minister to Yahweh, and those who serve are Levites;	10 Ma quant’è a noi, il Signore è l’Iddio nostro, e noi non l’abbiamo abbandonato; ed i sacerdoti, che ministrano al Signore, sono figliuoli d’Aaronne; ed i Leviti sono impiegati a questa opera;
11 morning after morning, evening after evening, they present burnt offerings and perfumed incense toYahweh, they put the bread of permanent offering on the clean table and nightly light the lamps on the goldenlamp-stand; for we keep the decree of Yahweh our God, although you have abandoned him.	11 ed ogni mattina, ed ogni sera ardono gli olocausti al Signore, co’ profumi degli aromati; ed ordinano i pani che si devono ordinare sopra la tavola pura; ed ogni sera accendono il candelliere d’oro con le sue lampane; perciocchè noi osserviamo ciò che il Signore ha ordinato; ma voi avete abbandonato il Signore.
12 See how God is with us, at our head, and his priests with trumpets to sound the alarm against you!Israelites, do not make war on Yahweh, God of your ancestors, for you wil not succeed.'	12 Ed ecco, Iddio è con noi in capo, insieme co’ suoi sacerdoti, e con le trombe di suono squillante, per sonar con esse contro a voi. Figliuoli d’Israele, non combattete contro al Signore Iddio de’ padri vostri; perciocchè voi non prosperete
13 Now Jeroboam had sent a party round to ambush them from the rear; thus the main force confrontedJudah and the ambush lay to their rear.	13 In quel mezzo Geroboamo fece volgere un agguato, perchè venisse sopra que’ di Giuda di dietro; talchè Giuda avea gl’Israeliti in fronte, e l’agguato alle spalle.
14 And when Judah looked round, they found themselves being attacked from front and rear. Theycal ed on Yahweh, the priests sounded the trumpets,	14 E que’ di Giuda si rivoltarono, e videro ch’erano assaliti da fronte e dalle spalle; laonde gridarono al Signore, e i sacerdoti sonarono con le trombe.
15 and the men of Judah raised the war cry and, as they raised the cry, God routed Jeroboam and allIsrael before Abijah and Judah.	15 La gente di Giuda ancora gittò grida; e, come gittavano quelle grida, Iddio sconfisse Geroboamo e tutto Israele davanti ad Abia ed a Giuda.
16 So the Israelites fled before Judah, because God had given Judah the upper hand,	16 Ed i figliuoli d’Israele fuggirono d’innanzi a Giuda; e Iddio li diede loro nelle mani.
17 and Abijah and his army inflicted a great slaughter on them: five hundred thousand of Israel's pickedmen fel , kil ed.	17 Ed Abia ed il suo popolo li percossero d’una grande sconfitta; e caddero uccisi cinquecentomila uomini scelti d’Israele.
18 So the Israelites were humbled on that occasion, while the Judaeans won, since they had relied onYahweh, God of their ancestors.	18 Così i figliuoli d’Israele furono in quel tempo abbassati, ed i figliuoli di Giuda si rinforzarono; perciocchè si erano appoggiati sopra il Signore Iddio de’ padri loro.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam, taking from him the towns of Bethel with its dependencies, Jeshanah withits dependencies and Ephron with its dependencies,	19 Ed Abia perseguitò Geroboamo, e gli prese alcune città: Betel, e le terre del suo territorio; Iesana, e le terre del suo territorio; ed Efraim, e le terre del suo territorio.
20 nor did Jeroboam regain strength during Abijah's lifetime. Eventual y Yahweh struck him and he died,	20 E Geroboamo non ebbe più potere alcuno al tempo di Abia; e il Signore lo percosse, ed egli morì.
21 but Abijah grew stronger than ever; he married fourteen wives and fathered twenty-two sons andsixteen daughters.	21 Ed Abia si fortificò, e prese quattordici mogli, e generò ventidue figliuoli, e sedici figliuole.
22 The rest of the history of Abijah, his conduct and his sayings, are recorded in the midrash of theprophet Iddo.	22 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Abia, e de’ suoi portamenti, e de’ suoi fatti; queste cose sono scritte nelle memorie del profeta Iddio
23 When Abijah fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asasucceeded him. In his time the country was at peace for ten years.
