1 When David had become old and ful of days, he made his son Solomon king of Israel,1 Then David, being old and full of days, appointed his son Solomon as king over Israel.
2 and then summoned al the leaders of Israel, with the priests and Levites.2 And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel, with the priests as well as the Levites.
3 A census was taken of those Levites thirty years old and upwards. On a count of heads, theynumbered thirty-eight thousand men;3 And the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward. And there were found thirty-eight thousand men.
4 twenty-four thousand were responsible for the service of the House of Yahweh, six thousand wereofficials and judges,4 Of these, twenty-four thousand were chosen and distributed to the ministry of the house of the Lord. Then six thousand were overseers and judges.
5 four thousand were gatekeepers and four thousand praised Yahweh on the instruments which Davidhad made for praising him.5 Moreover, four thousand were porters. And the same number were the singers of psalms to the Lord, with the musical instruments which he had made for the music.
6 David then divided the Levites into classes: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.6 And David distributed them into courses according to the sons of Levi, specifically, Gershom, and Kohath, and Merari.
7 Of the Gershonites there were Ladan and Shimei.7 The sons of Gershom: Ladan and Shimei.
8 Sons of Ladan: Jehiel first, Zetham, Joel; three in al .8 The sons of Ladan: the leader Jahiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three.
9 Sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, Haran; three in al . These are the heads of families of Ladan.9 The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the leaders of the families of Ladan.
10 Sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, Jeush, Beriah; these were the sons of Shimei; four in al .10 Then the sons of Shimei: Jahath, and Zizah, and Jeush, and Beriah. These were the sons of Shimei, four.
11 Jahath was the eldest, Zizah the second, then Jeush and Beriah, who had not many children andwere reckoned as one family.11 Now Jahath was first, Zizah second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, and for this reason they were reckoned as one family and one house.
12 Sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, Uzziel; four in al .12 The sons of Kohath: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel, four.
13 Sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart to consecrate the things that were especial yholy, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense in the presence of Yahweh, to serve him and to bless in his namefor ever.13 The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Now Aaron was separated so that he might minister in the Holy of Holies, he and his sons forever, and so that he might burn incense to the Lord, according to his rite, and so that he might bless his name in perpetuity.
14 Moses, man of God, and his sons were reckoned with the tribe of Levi.14 The sons of Moses, the man of God, were also numbered in the tribe of Levi.
15 Sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.15 The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.
16 Sons of Gershom: Shebuel, the first.16 The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the first.
17 Of the sons of Eliezer, Rehabiah was the first. Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiahwere very numerous.17 Now the sons of Eliezer were Rehabiah the first. And there were no other sons for Eliezer. But the sons of Rehabiah were multiplied exceedingly.
18 Sons of Izhar: Shelomith, the first.18 The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the first.
19 Sons of Hebron: Jeriah first, Amariah second, Jahaziel third, Jekameam fourth.19 The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth.
20 Sons of Uzziel: Micah first, Isshiah second.20 The sons of Uzziel: Micah the first, Isshiah the second.
21 Sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. Sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.21 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.
22 Eleazar died without sons, but he did have daughters, whom their cousins, the sons of Kish, married.22 Then Eleazar died, and had no sons, but only daughters. And so the sons of Kish, their brothers, married them.
23 Sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, Jeremoth: three in al .23 The sons of Mushi: Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.
24 These were the sons of Levi by their families, the heads of families, and those registered by name,individual y; whoever was twenty years old or upwards had his function in the service of the Temple of Yahweh.24 These are the sons of Levi, in their kindred and families, leaders in turns, and the number of each of the heads who were doing the works of the ministry of the house of the Lord, from twenty years of age and upward.
25 For David said, 'Since Yahweh, God of Israel, has given rest to his people Israel and has taken upresidence in Jerusalem for ever,25 For David said: “The Lord, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people, and a habitation in Jerusalem even unto eternity.
26 the Levites need no longer carry the Dwel ing or any of the objects required for its service.'26 Neither shall it be the office of the Levites any more to carry the tabernacle with all its equipment for use in the ministry.”
27 For, according to the last words of David, the Levites who had been registered were of twenty yearsand upwards.27 Also, according to the last precepts of David, the sons of Levi shall be counted by number from twenty years of age and upward.
28 Their duty now is to help the sons of Aaron in the service of the House of Yahweh, in the care of thecourts and rooms, the purification of al the holy things, the work for the service of the House of God,28 And they shall be under the hand of the sons of Aaron, in the care of the house of the Lord, in the vestibule, and in the chambers, and in the place of purification, and in the sanctuary, and in all the works of the ministry of the temple of the Lord.
29 the loaves of permanent offering, the flour for the oblation, the wafers of unleavened bread, the pan-baked materials, the unmixed materials and all measures of volume and length.29 But the priests shall be over the bread of the presence, and the sacrifice of fine wheat flour, and the unleavened cakes, and the frying pan, and the roasting, and over every weight and measure.
30 Furthermore, they have to be present every morning to give thanks and praise to Yahweh, and alsoin the evening,30 Yet truly, the Levites shall stand to confess and to sing to the Lord, in the morning, and similarly in the evening,
31 and at the bringing of every burnt offering to Yahweh on Sabbath, New Moon or solemn feast,appearing regularly before Yahweh in accordance with the numbers required of them.31 as much in the oblation of the holocausts of the Lord, as in the Sabbaths and new moons and other solemnities, according to the number and ceremonies for each and every matter, perpetually before the Lord.
32 In serving the Temple of Yahweh they observe the ritual of the Tent of Meeting, the ritual of thesanctuary and the ritual of their kinsmen, the sons of Aaron.'32 And let them keep the observances of the tabernacle of the covenant, and the rituals of the sanctuary, and the observance of the sons of Aaron, their brothers, so that they may minister in the house of the Lord.
