1 When David had become old and ful of days, he made his son Solomon king of Israel,	1 Quand David fut très vieux, il plaça son fils Salomon sur le trône d’Israël.
2 and then summoned al the leaders of Israel, with the priests and Levites.	2 Il rassembla alors tous les chefs d’Israël, les prêtres et les lévites.
3 A census was taken of those Levites thirty years old and upwards. On a count of heads, theynumbered thirty-eight thousand men;	3 On recensa les lévites âgés de 30 ans et plus: ils étaient 38 000 au total,
4 twenty-four thousand were responsible for the service of the House of Yahweh, six thousand wereofficials and judges,	4 24 000 étaient responsables du culte dans la Maison de Yahvé, 6 000 étaient scribes et juges,
5 four thousand were gatekeepers and four thousand praised Yahweh on the instruments which Davidhad made for praising him.	5 4 000 étaient gardiens de la porte, 4 000 louaient Yahvé avec les instruments que David avait faits pour accompagner les chants.
6 David then divided the Levites into classes: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.	6 Ensuite David répartit les lévites en trois groupes suivant leurs clans: Guerchon, Kahat et Mérari.
7 Of the Gershonites there were Ladan and Shimei.	7 Pour les Guerchonites: Ladan et Chiméï.
8 Sons of Ladan: Jehiel first, Zetham, Joel; three in al .	8 Fils de Ladan: Yéhiel le premier, Zétam, Yoël, trois en tous.
9 Sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, Haran; three in al . These are the heads of families of Ladan.	9 Fils de Chiméï: Chelomit, Haziel, Harân, trois en tout. Ils étaient chefs des familles de Ladan.
10 Sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, Jeush, Beriah; these were the sons of Shimei; four in al .	10 Fils de Chiméï: Yahat, Ziza, Yéouch, Béria: ce sont les quatre fils de Chiméï.
11 Jahath was the eldest, Zizah the second, then Jeush and Beriah, who had not many children andwere reckoned as one family.	11 Yahat était l’aîné, Ziza le second, puis Yéouch et Béria qui n’avaient pas beaucoup d’enfants et formaient une seule famille, un seul groupe.
12 Sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, Uzziel; four in al .	12 Fils de Kahat: Amram, Yisar, Hébron, Ouzziel; quatre en tout.
13 Sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart to consecrate the things that were especial yholy, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense in the presence of Yahweh, to serve him and to bless in his namefor ever.	13 Fils d’Amram: Aaron et Moïse. Aaron et ses fils furent mis à part pour s’occuper à tout jamais des objets sacrés, pour faire brûler l’encens en présence de Yahvé, pour le servir et bénir le peuple en son Nom pour toujours.
14 Moses, man of God, and his sons were reckoned with the tribe of Levi.	14 Mais les fils de Moïse, homme de Dieu, furent appelés du nom même de la tribu de Lévi.
15 Sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.	15 Les fils de Moïse: Guerchom et Éliézer.
16 Sons of Gershom: Shebuel, the first.	16 Fils de Guerchom: Chebouel le premier.
17 Of the sons of Eliezer, Rehabiah was the first. Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiahwere very numerous.	17 Éliézer avait comme fils: Rehabya le premier. Éliézer n’avait pas d’autre fils, mais nombreux furent les fils de Rehabya.
18 Sons of Izhar: Shelomith, the first.	18 Fils de Yichar: Chelomit le premier.
19 Sons of Hebron: Jeriah first, Amariah second, Jahaziel third, Jekameam fourth.	19 Fils d’Hébron: Yériyas le premier, Amarya le second, Yahaziel le troisième, Yékaméam le quatrième.
20 Sons of Uzziel: Micah first, Isshiah second.	20 Fils d’Ouziel: Mika le premier, Yichiya le second.
21 Sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. Sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.	21 Fils de Mérari: Mahli et Mouchi. Fils de Mahli: Éléazar et Kich.
22 Eleazar died without sons, but he did have daughters, whom their cousins, the sons of Kish, married.	22 Éléazar mourut sans laisser de fils, mais seulement des filles: leurs cousins, les fils de Kich, les épousèrent.
23 Sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, Jeremoth: three in al .	23 Fils de Mouchi: Mahli, Éder, Yérémot: trois au total.
24 These were the sons of Levi by their families, the heads of families, and those registered by name,individual y; whoever was twenty years old or upwards had his function in the service of the Temple of Yahweh.	24 Voilà donc les fils de Lévi selon leurs familles. Ces chefs de familles avaient été inscrits par leurs noms individuellement à partir de l’âge de 20 ans: c’étaient eux qui servaient dans la Maison de Yahvé.
25 For David said, 'Since Yahweh, God of Israel, has given rest to his people Israel and has taken upresidence in Jerusalem for ever,	25 David avait dit: “Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, a donné la paix à son peuple, et il habite pour toujours à Jérusalem;
26 the Levites need no longer carry the Dwel ing or any of the objects required for its service.'	26 les lévites n’auront donc plus à transporter la Demeure ni les objets utilisés pour son service.”
27 For, according to the last words of David, the Levites who had been registered were of twenty yearsand upwards.	27 Selon les dernières paroles de David, on recensa les lévites à partir de l’âge de 20 ans.
28 Their duty now is to help the sons of Aaron in the service of the House of Yahweh, in the care of thecourts and rooms, the purification of al the holy things, the work for the service of the House of God,	28 Leur tâche est d’assister les fils d’Aaron dans le service du Temple de Yahvé, dans les cours et les salles, pour la purification de tous les objets sacrés et le bon déroulement du culte dans la Maison de Dieu.
29 the loaves of permanent offering, the flour for the oblation, the wafers of unleavened bread, the pan-baked materials, the unmixed materials and all measures of volume and length.	29 Ils sont aussi chargés des pains mis en rangées, de la fleur de farine pour les offrandes, des galettes de pain sans levain, des gâteaux cuits sur le gril ou dans les pots, et ils veillent au respect du poids et des mesures fixés pour les offrandes.
30 Furthermore, they have to be present every morning to give thanks and praise to Yahweh, and alsoin the evening,	30 Ils doivent être présents chaque matin comme chaque soir, pour chanter la gloire et les louanges de Yahvé.
31 and at the bringing of every burnt offering to Yahweh on Sabbath, New Moon or solemn feast,appearing regularly before Yahweh in accordance with the numbers required of them.	31 Ils doivent être là sans cesse devant Yahvé, au nombre fixé par le règlement, toutes les fois qu’on présente les holocaustes du sabbat, des Nouvelles Lunes et des fêtes, en l’honneur de Yahvé.
32 In serving the Temple of Yahweh they observe the ritual of the Tent of Meeting, the ritual of thesanctuary and the ritual of their kinsmen, the sons of Aaron.'	32 Ils assurent ainsi dans la Maison de Yahvé le culte qui se célébrait dans la Tente du Rendez-Vous, en suivant le rituel du Sanctuaire et le rituel de leurs frères, les fils d’Aaron.
