1 The Philistines gave battle to Israel and the Israelites, fleeing from the Philistines, fel and wereslaughtered on Mount Gilboa.1 ܘܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܡܬܟܬܫܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܥܡ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܥܪܩܘ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܡܢ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܘܢܦܠܘ ܩܛܝ̈ܠܐ ܣܓ̈ܝܐܐ ܒܛܘܪܐ ܕܓܠܒܘܥ
2 The Philistines bore down on Saul and his sons, and they kil ed Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua,Saul's sons.2 ܘܐܕܪܟܘ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܠܫܐܘܠ ܘܠܒܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܚܪܒܘ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܠܝܘܢܬܢ ܘܠܝܫܘܝ ܘܠܡܠܟܝܫܘܥ ܒܢܘ̈ܗܝ ܕܫܐܘܠ
3 The fighting grew fiercer round Saul; the archers came upon him, and he was wounded by thearchers.3 ܘܥܫܢ ܩܪܒܐ ܥܠ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܐܫܟܚܘܗܝ ܐܢܫܐ ܩܫ̈ܬܐ ܕܐܘܡܢܝܢ ܛܒ ܠܡܫܕܐ ܒܩܫܬܐ ܘܟܕ ܚܙܐ ܐܢܘܢ ܫܐܘܠ ܕܚܠ ܛܒ ܡܢ ܩܕܡܝܗܘܢ
4 Saul then said to his armour-bearer, 'Draw your sword and run me through with it. I do not want theseuncircumcised men to come and make fun of me.' But his armour-bearer was very much afraid and would not doit. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.4 ܘܐܡܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܫ̇ܩܠ ܡܐܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܫܡܘܛ ܚܪܒܟ ܘܕܩܘܪܝܢܝ ܒܗ̇ ܥܕܠܐ ܢܐܬܘܢ ܥܘܪ̈ܠܐ ܗܠܝܢ ܘܢܩܛܠܘܢܢܝ ܘܢܫܬܢܕܘܢ ܒܝ ܘܠܐ ܨܒܐ ܫ̇ܩܠ ܡܐܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܡܛܠ ܕܕܚܠ ܛܒ ܘܫܡܛ ܫܐܘܠ ܣܝܦܗ ܘܢܦܠ ܥܠܘܗܝ
5 His armour-bearer, seeing that Saul was dead, fel on his sword too and died with him.5 ܘܚܙܐ ܫ̇ܩܠ ܡܐܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܡܝܬ ܠܗ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܢܦܠ ܐܦ ܗܘ ܥܠ ܣܝܦܗ ܘܡܝܬ ܥܡܗ
6 Thus died Saul, his three sons and his entire household together.6 ܘܡܝܬ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܬܠܬܐ ܒܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܫ̇ܩܠ ܡܐܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܟܠܗܘܢ ܓܢܒܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܡܝܬܘ ܒܝܘܡܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܐܟܚܕܐ
7 When al the Israelites who were in the val ey saw that the Israelites had been routed and that Sauland his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. The Philistines then came and occupied them.7 ܘܚܙܘ ܟܠ ܐܢܫܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܕܐܝܬ ܒܥܒܪܐ ܕܦܩܥܬܐ ܘܕܐܝܬ ܒܥܒܪܐ ܕܝܘܪܕܢܢ ܕܥܪܩ ܠܗ ܥܡܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܕܐܬܩܛܠ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܒܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܫܒܩܘ ܩܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܘܥܪܩܘ ܘܐܬܘ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܘܥܡܪܘ ܒܗܝܢ
8 When the Philistines came on the fol owing day to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons lyingon Mount Gilboa.8 ܘܗܘܐ ܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܝܘܡܐ ܐܬܘ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܠܡܚܠܨܘ ܩܛ̈ܝܠܐ ܘܐܫܟܚܘ ܠܫܐܘܠ ܘܠܬܠܬܐ ܒܢܘ̈ܗܝ ܩܛܝܠܝܢ ܘܪܡܝܢ ܒܛܘܪܐ ܕܓܠܒܘܥ
9 They stripped him and, taking his head and his armour, had these carried round the territory of thePhilistines to proclaim the good news to their idols and their people.9 ܘܫܩܠܘ ܪ̈ܫܝܗܘܢ ܘܫܠܚܘ ܡܐܢ̈ܝܗܘܢ ܘܫܕܪܘ ܠܐܪܥܐ ܕܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܠܩܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܘܠܡܕ̈ܝܢܬܐ ܘܠܟܪ̈ܟܐ ܠܡܣܒܪܘ ܒܝܬ ܦܬܟܪ̈ܝܗܘܢ ܘܒܥܡܗܘܢ
10 They placed his armour in the temple of their gods and nailed his head up in the temple of Dagon.10 ܘܣܡܘ ܡܐܢ̈ܝܗܘܢ ܘܙܝܢܗܘܢ ܒܝܬ ܦܬܟܪ̈ܝܗܘܢ ܘܦܓܪ̈ܝܗܘܢ ܬܠܘ ܒܫܘܪܐ ܕܒܝܬ ܝܫܢ
11 When al the inhabitants of Jabesh in Gilead heard everything that the Philistines had done to Saul,11 ܘܫܡܥܘ ܝܬܒ̈ܝ ܝܒܝܫ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܡܕܡ ܕܥܒܕܘ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܠܫܐܘܠ
12 the warriors al set out and took the bodies of Saul and his sons away; they brought them to Jabeshand buried their bones under the tamarisk of Jabesh and fasted for seven days.12 ܘܩܡܘ ܟܠ ܓܒܪ ܡܪܐ ܚܝܠܐ ܘܐܙܠܘ ܟܘܠܗ ܠܠܝܐ ܘܢܣܒܘ ܦܓܪܗ ܕܫܐܘܠ ܘܦܓܪ̈ܐ ܕܒܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܡܢ ܫܘܪܐ ܕܒܝܬ ܝܫܢ ܘܐܝܬܝܘ ܠܝܒܝܫ ܘܐܘܩܕܘ ܐܢܘܢ ܬܡܢ ܘܢܣܒܘ ܓܪ̈ܡܝܗܘܢ ܛܡܪܘ ܬܚܝܬ ܒܛܡܬܐ ܕܒܝܒܝܫ ܘܨܡܘ ܫܒܥܐ ܝܘܡ̈ܝܢ
13 Thus died Saul in the infidelity of which he had been guilty towards Yahweh, in that he had notobeyed the word of Yahweh and because he had consulted a necromancer for guidance.13 ܘܡܝܬ ܫܐܘܠ ܥܠ ܕܟܕܒ ܟܕܒܘܬܐ ܒܡܪܝܐ ܘܡܕܡ ܕܦܩܕܗ ܠܐ ܢܛܪ ܘܐܦ ܫܐܠ ܒܙܟܘܪ̈ܐ
14 He had not consulted Yahweh, who therefore caused his death and transferred the monarchy toDavid son of Jesse.14 ܘܒܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܗ ܠܐ ܫܐܠ ܘܐܬܝܗܒܬ ܡܠܟܘܬܗ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܒܪ ܐܝܫܝ
